Sony's tiny XDV-D500 and XDV-G200 Bravia TVs

Let's break it down TV junkie. Sony's new ¥38,000 (about $355) XDV-D500 features a 3-inch, 432 x 240 pixel resolution display with 160-degree viewing angle, 500:1 contrast, and a battery capable of about 8-hours of TV reception. It can even record up to 10 hours of scheduled programming to 2GB of internal memory. The itty bittier XDV-G200 brings a 2-inch LCD to the show, AM/FM radio too, then ditches the EPG and recording function. This is Japan mind you, so these sets receive digital 1Seg TV -- in other words you can kiss your import fantasies goodbye.

Sony has started to come out with a lot cooler media devices lately (first the A810, now the three inch "TV" looks nice), it's just a shame we don't have anything like this in the States.

Its a shame theres nothing to WATCH in the states.

All the good networks and channels are going to the general American public, which is getting stupider.

We all see this stuff and think, "Wow, Japan must be so cool..."

Well, I have been there and I can say for a fact, it is that cool ;)

I heard that our new DTV signal does not play well with moving devices (hand-held, in-car, etc.), is this true or not?

"Because of the need for the digital receiver to sample the transmitted signal at a very precise time, the digital receiver cannot be in motion... motion would cause a slight change in the timing of the received signal due to the Doppler effect; this would make accurate sampling of 8-VBS modulation impossible. Enhanced 8-VBS or E8-VBS seeks to overcome this limitation of motion by broadcasting a more robust signal at a lower data rate."

You can watch DTV/1-seg in motion if its slow. Which is around the speed of traffic in Japan anyways. However, incredibly hard to watch on the trains, which sucks.

But is totally free H.264 AVC broadcast, no-drm, no hassle, and a million times better then analog-broadcast. Incredibly cool for sporting events when you can't be at home. Pretty much every single cellphone that ships comes with 1-seg now, and there are tuners for the DS & PSP.

I still live in Japan and I can say it's still ages behind the US in tech, regardless of all the gadgets you see advertised. Most of these never even make it to market and most aren't even used. The main reason this tech isn't available in the US, or Europe for that matter, is there's nothing to watch on broadcast TV to begin with, not even here! Anything cool or worth watching is on cable, so having this device is quite worthless. Get yourself a portable media device that can play your own home-recorded media from cable or sat and you're fine. Until cable goes free wireless this is nothing but a useless, but cool looking, paper weight.

Now stop thinking Japan is the tech mecca of the world and get on with your life. It's cool in some aspects but well behind the times with others.

I apologize for this being irrelevant, but I seem to be unable to comment on Engadget HD. Can someone please help shed some light on this issue since I highly doubt I will get any sort of help from the support staff at weblogs inc.

All I wanna do is enter into some contests I know I won't win but would like the formality of entering into as to give myself hope for some shiny new toys I can't afford but would very much like.

I am always interested in portable stuffs; category Technology. Nowadays, it’s not surprising to see how advance it is in Japan compare to the country we live in. I believe they will soon have it marketed for other countries; maybe years later.

Right at the moment, I don’t mind paying £2 to 3 network to watch TV on-the-go using my mobile if necessary.

When will you lot realise that there are literally millions of potential customers willing to jump allover stuff like this, if only you would make a DVB version for Europe/Australia/USA etc. First a 1SEG tuner for the PSP-2ooo and now this. Wake up and smell the potential sales would please?!?

Er, I thought the coaxial was an input- so that if you're outside the One-seg reception area you plug in rabbit-ears to watch TV. Wonder if it would work with cable?

For some reason when I saw the picuture, I thought of George from Seinfeld watching TV in bed while pleasuring his girlfriend.

Anyway, I'm wondering how difficult it is to shrink a DTV tuner down to that size. I'm sure Sony has found a way for the 1seg tuner for the initial PSP-2000. I'm sure there will be a big market for this (for all the Georges in us) in the US.
