You can watch DTV/1-seg in motion if its slow. Which is around the speed of traffic in Japan anyways. However, incredibly hard to watch on the trains, which sucks.
But is totally free H.264 AVC broadcast, no-drm, no hassle, and a million times better then analog-broadcast. Incredibly cool for sporting events when you can't be at home. Pretty much every single cellphone that ships comes with 1-seg now, and there are tuners for the DS & PSP.
I still live in Japan and I can say it's still ages behind the US in tech, regardless of all the gadgets you see advertised. Most of these never even make it to market and most aren't even used. The main reason this tech isn't available in the US, or Europe for that matter, is there's nothing to watch on broadcast TV to begin with, not even here! Anything cool or worth watching is on cable, so having this device is quite worthless. Get yourself a portable media device that can play your own home-recorded media from cable or sat and you're fine. Until cable goes free wireless this is nothing but a useless, but cool looking, paper weight.
Now stop thinking Japan is the tech mecca of the world and get on with your life. It's cool in some aspects but well behind the times with others.
