Archos 405 gets bumped to 30GB

The Archos 405 got a little heftier this afternoon, with a capacity bump to 30GB. Archos went old-school in getting to that size, using a hard drive instead of flash -- but the upside is that drives are cheap, which means the 30GB 405 is just €199 ($293). European customers can apparently score this at the end of the month, but there's no word on a North American release yet.

Now, this Archos player. Not a bad deal, especially considering I've been meaning to pick up a new PMP for awhile now. And the 405 always caught my eye for some reason. I just wish I was able to handle one before I pick one up.

I know the Archos is a totally different market than an iPod touch... but seeing 32 gigs of flash on an iPod touch now really makes a 30 gig archos look silly

and it gets better... archos prices in america are even lower than in Europe, so the archos 405 might be around $200 considering that the top-of-the-line archos 605 is 300$ MSRP for 30gb...

if you want flash the 2GB version is like $120 and a 16GB SD card is another $65 for a total 18GB for $185

Does the $500 32GB Touch make the $400 160GB Archos 605 look silly? You know, with it's smaller and much lower resolution screen and inablity to play standard xvid and straight .vob files at full DVD resolution?

Hard drives are destined to fail eh? Are you really going to still be using the thing 5 years from now? Because I still have a working 3rd gen hard drive iPod, still works great, and yes, I still use it. And I know for a fact there are still working 1st gen ones too. And hey, take that $200 you saved from buying this instead of the iPod touch, and by the time the hard drive dies, you'll probably be able to pick up another Archos 405 for less than that!

Well made hard drives don't die that often. I've actually got consumer level drives (OEM Gateway) still functioning after over 12 years. It's simply a matter of what drives they're putting in these things - and from what I know of Archos, I'd bet they're using something pretty good.

Seriously, sometimes people want an Archos with a hard drive that is less than a meter wide. It's a nice mp3 player and if it's still on the market when my 404 dies (if it dies) I would seriously consider it.

Heh, I knew it. Archos ain't no Apple, limiting features to specific players. Bit disappointed that they didn't release a 16GB one at least.

Face it, hard drives are in their golden age now. Ironic, eh? By golden, I mean economical. Flash memory players and personal computers are somewhat of a luxury today.

OMG... this Archos 405 is just a rebranded 404. I sense obselette material here! Same dimensions, hardware, everything! Just a new firmware. I had a hunch when the indented d-pad made a comeback. But at least it still looks very 05. Unlike the Archos 705 WiFi, a clone brother of the 704 WiFi...
