Out of the box 1.1.3 iPhones now software unlockable
Mr. GEOrge HOTz did it again. He just loosed a world of hurt on AT&T with a software unlock for 1.1.3 iPhones. That's right, the software is said to work on any fresh from the Apple store, shrink-wrapped iPhone sporting the latest 1.1.3 firmware and 4.6 bootloader, something the AnySIM unlock can't do. GeoHot's instructions (and dev / elite team smack talk) posted after the break. We haven't tested yet so, as always, take care.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

geohot's 1.1.2 software unlock
yes, this is what you have all been waiting for
now fixed to support 1.1.3
1. Download these:
gunlock and the secpack from http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/ or the blog :)
the 4.02.13 fls from http://george.zjlotto.com/index.php/baseband/
2. Downgrade your phone to 1.0.2. See all the great tutorials online to do this.
Your baseband won't be downgraded, this is normal.
This will probably work on other versions too, but 1.0.2 doesn't lose wifi on bb access.
3. Kill CommCenter and run "gunlock secpack ICE04.02.13_G.fls"
4. Reload CommCenter. For some reason my phone was in brick mode. Use the elite team bricktool to get out.
5. Enjoy your 1.1.2 OTB unlocked iPhone
Now who'd have thought it'd be this easy :)
This release is no thanks to elite/dev
I wish they would share like the old days.
I don't believe everyone in the team is like this, but come on guys.

Great! We will all probably need to upgrade to 1.l.4 before the 3rd party apps will work. Thanks!
G Man @ Feb 8th 2008 5:41AM
Freaking shit it's about time!!!!!!!!
George, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!
G Man @ Feb 8th 2008 6:18AM
does it work for 1.1.3 OTB 16GB iPhones?
thetinguy @ Feb 8th 2008 1:45PM
Your welcome. Oh and btw we already have native apps.
Jakob @ Feb 8th 2008 1:06PM
Yes this unlock also works on 16 GB iPhone.
I'm so excited, maybe somebody will purchase an iPhone for me and send it to Denmark? Of course with profit. Seriously if you want to, contact me at jakobhenner@gmail.com. Thank you!
Eckofish @ Feb 8th 2008 4:16AM
What about 1.1.2... You can't just skip a version chaps. But well done... links anyone?
My boss has a 1.1.2 iPhone OTB from American. I'm thinking kudos points if I were able to jailbreak and sim unlock it for him.
Can anyone shed some light on this please?
Joey Geraci @ Feb 8th 2008 10:58AM
Uhm, upgrade to 1.1.3 and then use this hack?
TazgodX @ Feb 8th 2008 1:45PM
this hack was origianlly a 1.1.2 OOTB software unlock. it has been changed shortly after to allow for 1.1.3 OOTB also. it works on both!
Mike @ Feb 8th 2008 5:27PM
I have a 1.1.2 OTB with 4.6 Bootloader and have successfully jailbroken and unlocked my phone to work in Canada here on the Rogers network using a StealthSim card. Was easy peasey and just a matter of following along with some directions. Let me know if you need a hand.
BTW, I freaking love this phone. 1 gadget, not 3 anymore.
razor @ Feb 8th 2008 4:17AM
will probably work on other versions too, but 1.1.2 doesn't lose wifi
thats a typo... it should be 1.0.2...
many have confirmed that it works... head over to hackint0sh
Paul @ Feb 8th 2008 4:17AM
Has anyone already tried this here? ;)
Alexandru Bauer @ Feb 8th 2008 4:20AM
check out hackint0sh.org for tutorial and etc.
snitch @ Feb 8th 2008 4:23AM
apple better hire this kid quick, and just pay him to play with the iphone to see what other flaws he can find before they start to loose a lot of change
Frank Furter @ Feb 8th 2008 8:07AM
First off it's 'lose'....'LOSE'!!! Sheesh
And yes, judging from his mad skillz (is that what you kids call it?) he's a valuable asset. I have a hunch that Apple is looking for creative thinkers, though, not pimple-faced introverts that know how to hack.
Just a guess.
darex @ Feb 8th 2008 10:17AM
So, running this on an out-of-the-box iPhone allows what?
Is activation no longer required and it can be used on any GSM network with any GSM card, or ... ?
Rob @ Feb 8th 2008 11:11AM
Apple isn't "loosing" any cash here...AT&T is losing the cash...
snitch @ Feb 8th 2008 12:39PM
everytime a iPhone is activated throw AT&T apple gets $200 for the 2 years a custumer signs for, just do the math if 1 million units go to unlockers that's 200 million they are losing. So @Rob, yes Dude apple is losing at of change
carl @ Feb 8th 2008 12:41PM
Au contraire, apple's looseying out on what, $18/month from AT&T per iphone?
Sean @ Feb 8th 2008 4:53PM
stfu jeez
nikster @ Feb 10th 2008 10:50AM
You guys don't get it. iPhone locked = Apple wins, rakes in $$$ from revenue sharing. iPhone unlocked = Apple also wins, sells 500k via grey dealers all over the world. At a PROFIT. It's a win-win for Apple.
That's called having the cake and eating it, too.
Talgat @ Feb 8th 2008 4:30AM
At last I can purchase an iPhone for myself. Thanks to Mr. GEOrge HOTz.
dzhiurgis @ Feb 8th 2008 4:39AM
Now what do I with 8 HyperSim's ???? Oh man, I'm so bankrupt.
Talgat @ Feb 8th 2008 4:56AM
Sell them out on eBay. People who can't use the software unlock are always out there.
Kei @ Feb 8th 2008 4:58AM
I can't access http://george.zjlotto.com/index.php/baseband/
I'll gladly mirror everything if needed.
Brian @ Feb 8th 2008 5:24AM
Unlockable for us in the UK ?

Yes works on UK iPhones, mirror to fls file - http://rs357.rapidshare.com/files/90094211/ICE04.02.13_G-eep-fls.rar
gazdude @ Feb 8th 2008 5:57AM
Yes you can unlock the UK iPhone by software now, and should be able to do the 16Gb badboy as well.

I take my hat off to you, George! Eagerly awaiting for the baseband to become available again - if any punters managed to download it, can you make it available as a torrent, pretty please?

How is this a unlook for 1.1.3?
It downgrades the phone to 1.1.2 !!!
Scott @ Feb 8th 2008 10:57AM
Because there was previously no way to software unlock 1.1.2 or 1.1.3 OTB phones. They had 4.6 bootloaders.
This hack unlocks all 4.6 bootloaders.
Currently there isn't a 1.1.3 jailbreak, but after you're unlocked on 1.1.2, you can "soft update" with an Installer package to 1.1.3. You'll have 1.1.3 software and baseband. The only difference is you won't update to 1.1.3 in iTunes.
End result is a fully functional, jailbroken, activated, unlocked iPhone on 1.1.3. :)
Lucky Luke @ Feb 8th 2008 7:11AM
Idiot me, didn't see the links! Have posted my own mirror as well.
http://www.luther.net.nz/iphoneunlock/
thedanks @ Feb 8th 2008 8:33AM
Why cant you just downgrade your bootloader (in installer under unlock tools) and run anysim?
numo @ Feb 8th 2008 10:34AM
Because you cant do that on 4.6 bootloader, only with 3.9 you can.

Jason @ Feb 8th 2008 10:09AM
Fuck Apple
Frank Furter @ Feb 8th 2008 10:14AM
Saaaaaaay, you got a dip in?
Andrew Harris @ Feb 8th 2008 10:59AM
Is this a activation and jailbreak and unlock? It's not clear and many times people use the terms unlock and jailbreak interchangeably.
Can someone confirm this is indeed a unlock (allowing the user to use a non AT&T sim card)?
Thanks,
Andrew

I think it may be time for these iPhone unlocking "stories" to stop getting posted. If Apple's going to keep breaking the unlocking, then these stories will literally never end.
If you have an iPhone and are into the latest unlocking/hacking news, I'm sure there are plenty of sites you can visit that have much more detail than Engadget can provide.
I'm perfectly happy with my iPhone the way it is, thanks. Looking forward to seeing what third party apps are developed, but I don't want to spend my time breaking and fixing my phone, I want it to WORK, which is why I don't hack it.
w00t @ Feb 8th 2008 12:25PM
I'm sure many people here appreciated the heads up that their iPhone can be freed from it's carrier shackles!
It's not like we hear about this every few days or even few weeks. There hasn't been a software unlock for 1.1.2OOB before, and it came out in November!
You might be perfectly happy with the way your iPhone is, but not everybody else is, that's why there are millions of unlocked users wordwide. I personally will be unlocking so I can pop in a PAYG sim when abroad instead of being gouged for roaming charges.
Reid @ Feb 8th 2008 12:30PM
Really? Seems like there's an unlocking story every day, though I admit that since there is only 1.1.1, 1.1.2, and 1.1.3, maybe this is a moderately major announcement.
I'd probably unlock my phone before going overseas -- either that or just take one of my other old GSM phones and do the PAYG thing. I certainly would never pay roaming charges.
But I'm just saying there are better sources for unlocking info and I thought everyone knew that it was unlock-able.
Cahlito @ Feb 8th 2008 11:17AM
I was expecting this post to have like 500 comments. How odd. Anyways, I'm pretty psyched for this. I'll unlock my iPhone as soon as I get home.
Happy Unlocking Everyone!
David L @ Feb 8th 2008 11:40AM
Big Props to you Geo. Appreciate your hard work and sharing it to the community (the world). :)
Danny737 @ Feb 8th 2008 11:59AM
I have a 1.1.3 OTB with bootloader version of 4.6 I guess (how can i find out what boot version i have?) If I do have a 4.6 is there anyway for it to be unlocked?
Danny737 @ Feb 8th 2008 12:09PM
How can you downgrade a 1.1.3 OTB to 1.0.2. I tried many times to downgrade it but had no luck. I connected the phone to ITUNES in safemode and ran the restore to 1.0.2 then I get the message from itunes says "waiting for iphone" and thats as far it will go...does anyone know why? is it the version of itunes that im using or it just cant be downgraded to 1.0.2?
Nitin @ Feb 8th 2008 9:23PM
To downgrade to 1.0.2 you need to iTunes 7.5. You can get it from (for windows):
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iTunes7/Win/061-3902.20071105.G6edS/iTunes75Setup.exe

Off the topic I know, but have an iPod touch, unlocked, and I can't get it to show up in my computer so I can add files to the 3rd party apps. How do I do that? Thanks for you help! Ohhh and is there a safe way to upgrade from 1.1.1 to either 1.1.2 or 1.1.3? Rock on fellow "Engadgeteers"
