No wonder Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 is so good: HTC makes it

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Sam, you are right on the money. Anyone who praises HTC for build quality is smoking crack.
It'll be using a 520 MHz processor according to a PC Mag article.
Just hope that:
1) That keyboard actually works.
2) GRAPHICS drivers are on there. Hell who knows what HTC meant that they'll start putting them in eventually.
3) The camera works.
4) Bluetooth doesn't drop out randomly.
5) Battery life is good.
That covers the 4 main concerns I have with an HTC-made device. Build quality should be excellent, as HTC's sliders have been of great build quality lately. But the Mogul, other Qualcomm-powered devices, and Shadow have me concerned in those five areas.
Don't you get how the industry works? If this is true, SE own this product and will be in charge of design and quality control! Do you really think that every piece of electronics you own is made by the company whose logo appears on the front? For instance, did you know that Apple do not manufacturer a single product? Everything you buy with an Apple product is made by some other company - some you've heard of, others you haven't.
This truly looks promising, though I have yet to use it myself to see if this supposed merging of technologies was great. I am still waiting for the rumored PSP phone though...
http://www.autopartsplace.com/gadget-rumors-2008.htm > I say that the Xperia was an unexpected surprise for gadget lovers for this year.
the keyboard looks an awful lot like of a CR Vaio, only smaller.
I don't care that HTC is only the ODM on this one and SE is the retailer.
The bottom line is HTC is going to profit on these units when they are sold. I can't BELIEVE ANY OF YOU HTC OWNERS WOULD EVER BUY ANOTHER DEVICE FROM THESE CROOKS. Don't tell me that just because this looks like a nice phone that you are going buy it despite HTC ***** in you in the **** on the video drivers of nearly all their current models.
PHUCK HTC! ALL current HTC owners SHOULD BOYCOTT ALL PRODUCTS - OEM AND OTHERWISE - of that stupid company until they fix the driver situation.
Anything less is a terrible dis-service to your fellow smartphone enthusiasts and all cellphone consumers for letting the company know they can bend you over and you'll take it without protest!!!!!
I never bought an HTC phone expecting any kind of special video drivers so I never got in a tizzy when they weren't there. The fact of the matter is HTC still makes the ultimate mobile devices even if they don't include 3D acceleration. Get over yourself.
Wow...caps cruise control not needed, probably haven't even owned a HTC device first off, and second off I don't think I got shafted buying a HTC phone. I have the "cingular 8125" it's nice and does all it can for being slightly outdated.
*note: I have noticed a slight issue with the keyboard, but it hasn't failed a majority of the time yet
Dude, what is the big deal about the damned video drivers? I have one of the phones that is missing the drivers, and I'm not as upset by it as you are. When I looked at my phone, it was pretty clear that the Mogul (unlike the Advantage) didn't have dedicated video acceleration. If you want an HTC with video acceleration, they make them, so instead of yelling and screaming about not getting drivers that were never promised, why don't you just get one of the units that DOES have video acceleration?
geez man, calm down.
you didn't pay for the license to use the video acceleration, and htc can't sell it per user, they would have to have bought the license for all phones.
htc didn't advertise it, so how can you be THAT angry?
this is no different from having a credit card that COULD have a $500,000 limit, but you are only allowed $2,000. do you get angry at the bank? no!
unless you can show me where htc advertised the ati hardware video acceleration, then i have to say that you are COMPLETELY unjustified to spread hate on a company that manufactures, comparatively, fantastic phones.
Engadget, please stop reminding me that I don't own this phone yet.
It will probably be the reason I finally drop Sprint. Unless they get a CDMA version out.
I second that Sprint statement.
I also concur with that! Ugh...forget these shitty Sprint phones that have problems up the wazoo...having to call every month to fix a bill. I'm out, ASAP.
htc great devices, zero support for driverrs or updates for my htc advantage
Hey I have had my 8525/tytn/hermes built by HTC for over a year now and honestly if the quality is anything like my current phone then I am in for barring a good android platform coming out... as for HTC supports on things they dont claim in the specs yeah my phone technically has a built in GPS chip look it up... But they didnt list it in the specs so therefore I am not upset that i can't use it... the community made an effort to unlock the potential but was deemed too difficult and not worth it. maybe the same will happen with the video but since you bought the device and the specs didnt list that you are not entitled to it... If the community comes up with a driver great extra features for free otherwise you got what you paid for, live with it.
Well, stop bashing the XPERIA coz it's coming from HTC. Since it's a SE device, it is designed by SE and will have SE quality. Nobody complaigned about iPhone being built at some chinese factory nobody knows about?
1) This is a rumor
2) Even if it WAS built by HTC, Sony is the one in charge of quality assurance. If it sucks ass, they won't let it release.
SE in charge of quality assurance? That's not a good thing going on their previous track record...
Figures...... 65k color screen :|
That's because of WM's 16-bit limitation.
uhm.. SE doesn't design any of the hardware for their mobiles afaik. They buy (most of) the hardware platforms from Ericsson Mobile Platforms and then they just add their fancy design on top of that.
HTC? LOL 65K color screen? Whats the pixel density? The higher the density the sharper the image details when displayed on such small screens.
It's a 3" WVGA (800x480) screen, do the math.
Whats all this talk about HTC video issues?i keep seeing all these new stories about "video drivers". I never rely on the stock stuff. My Touch plays videos just fine and everything is all snazzy. WinMo is the blank slate upon which you can do so much, thats why i like it.
And also with a HTC designed alternative showing interface with no use!! Remember this fact: it's only a cell-phone in WM!! So that's the same as all the other WM-phones~~~ What the demo video shows was only the toy-like alternative showing interface that moved a little, but then? For any more? No, boys and girls, that's only for joy with no use! Still the word: merely a normal WM-phone!!
All I can say about HTC and their lack of video drivers is...
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
HEY! That was my line! =P
HTC rules, and I will make sweet love to this phone.
GOOD & HTC MAKES
Thats an oxymoron right there
I doubt that HTC does make it though... look at it, it looks sexy
HTC wouldn't know sexy if the CEO googled it
HTC-built, Sony-Ericsson-designed/engineered.
I really really doubt HTC could design something like this.
How about an article telling us who makes all the Apple stuff?
You know, because Apple doesn't own a single factory or manufacturing plant. EVERYTHING Apple is made by other companies.
Christ the Sony hate really shines through, don't it?
For everyone moaning that maybe HTC won't provide the video drivers: ask yourself one question. Does the video performance *look* slow on teir demo website?
http://www.sonyericsson.com/x1/?lc=en&cc=GB
i dont understand where the HTC hate is coming from, just a couple of months ago people were willing to give HTC fellatio...
That can happen when a company screws it's most loyal customers.
@lain
I asked for pixel density, not resolution. That's how many pixel per inch. The iPhone/Touch has 163ppi. Thus resulting is a very very sharp image. Geez.
The screen is 3" wide with a resolution of 800 pixels wide by 480 pixels tall (800x480). Take the 800 pixels wide and divide it by the 3" wide to get 266.67 pixels per inch (PPI).
@Jubei I think Iain was giving you the numbers to work it hence "do the math".
@Matrinix Your sums seem a little strange I get more like 311ppi
I'm pretty sure I'm right...
I didn't check, but it seems like you are assuming 3" is the diagonal size... but the specs specifically say its 3" wide (width).
Thanks for the heads up Engadget! I was thinking about making this my next phone until I found out it's a rebadged HTC product. No GDI drivers for the Tilt = never again will I buy an HTC product.
I don't trust Sony and their proprietary stuff, so I was already wary of this otherwise drool-worthy product. I'm also a Tilt owner so I don't have any burning desire to give HTC more of my money, though I can see that they won't have that kind of control over this product. The combination of Sony and HTC has kind of diluted my interest in this device for the moment.
HTC where is my mogul gps / evdo rev A. rom!!!!
I kinda have to disagree with you Sean. I also had an Audiovox; in fact I've had it for over 2 years now. Even though HTC was in its infancy then, the 5600 was the most solid WinMo smartphone on the
market when it came out. Sure Windows Mobile 2003 was a tad clunky but my Audiovox did a lot more than I had expected, I even played my music and even some movies on there and never had problems with the battery (I went for entire weekends without charging it sometimes). So no, I would not say HTC makes the best phones on the market but calling them shoddy is a bit too much. Their phones (for all their faults) are highly customizable and can last a very long time. Ironically enough I stopped using mine yesterday when I got my iPhone but not before considering several HTC handsets first.
I wondered why it has a MicroSD slot instead of SE's M2 (Memory Stick Micro) usual standard...
Looks awesome :)
It doesn't have MicroSD. Read Sony's website.
My mistake...
Usually they say 'Memory Stick Micro(M2) Support' rather than naming Sandisk. Plus Engadget's original post did say MicroSD
What a great combination of hardware makers. Sony: their iTunes killer is Sonic Stage and ATRAC3. HTC: makers of most WinMob phones, but can't get out a MSM7200 video driver to save their life.
Oh now I'm worried. I was happy when I thought it was microSD :-( Sony Ericsson's own press release said microSD and pdadb.net says microsSDHC.... http://x.msmobiles.com/portal/images/events/mobile-world-congress-2008/Sony-Ericsson-Xperia.pdf
oh well :-(
Gizmodo UK news article also says MicroSD...
I'm sure this is a turn for the best in Memory Card standardisation :)

I AM SO TIRED OF STUPID PEOPLE SAYING "STOP WHINING ABOUT DRIVERS YOU WERE NEVER PROMISED." I have 2 ATT Tilts which are missing the video drivers. Aside from HTC press release anouncing there partnership with QUALCOMM and going on about their dual core processors and "enriched multimedia experience, I seen more on the box at my time of purchase. On the side of the Tilt Box it says,"Device Specifications:" 6 bulleted items define various cool things and the seventh which is truely breath taking or was I should say, Lists -QUALCOMM Dual Core 400Mhz Processor. Now, I don't know what kind of crack the people who think the drivers is no big deal are smoking but, IT MUST BE GOOD. In reading this on the box, I would expect both cores of a Dual Core processor to work. HUMMMMM, But what do I know, Im not on crack. Do you buy a laptop or desktop with only one core working. Come on people go to rehab if its to hard for you to understand falsification in advertising. GOTO college and study business but stop smashing peoples opinions just because you don't get it. F--K HI Tech Computer Corporation (HTC).
