Wondering what the XPERIA X1's magical mystery "panel interface" is? Good, us too. Now we've got a preview courtesy of Sony Ericsson. If it functions this quick in hand as it does in the promotional video then Sony Ericsson might just be on to something here. See what we mean after the break.
This is a really neat phone. I think it's going to replace my iPhone when it comes.
I've taken a real liking to the openness of the WinMo platform lately. I saw my bud's phone with it, and I love how it's pretty extensible, and how well it could work with content from your computer.
This brand new SE phone really puts the icing on the cake!
It runs Windows Mobile, Opera Mobile 9.5 is almost out, so, yes it does has zoom.
Although there are other win mobile browsers with zoom, Opera's the best, IMO better than Safari since it provides more functionality than it, like download manager, password manager, opera link, Kestrel-based(Opera Desktop 9.5) rendering engine: Presto which is quick as hell even on ajax-intensive pages, flash lite 3.0 support and others.
I don't believe for a second you own an iPhone. You are most likely a fanboy trying to to look cool. Fact is, if you did own an iPhone, YOU WOULD BE OUT OF YOUR MIND TO "take a liking" to Windows Mobile. It's really the worst piece of shit I've used. I'm currently using a Palm Treo 700P with a 7 year old OS that still kicks the crap out of WinMo. Recently I received an iPod Touch, and I am now definitely planning to get a 3G iPhone later this year. The mobile OSX is freakin amazing. I've never seen such a quick and responsive handheld device. I now find it very hard to have to use the Treo. I was pissed too about Job's control of everything on the iPhone at first, but now that the SDK is coming out in 2 weeks I can't wait. I know that the platform will take off and developers will really make it shine. But you go ahead with your windows mobile. I'll buy your iPhone from you.
I work at AT&T and I have gone from being an advocate of HTC devices to a salesperson who always recommends an alternative with better performing software (for the average user, that's normally the iPhone). This phone might finally give me something in the WM universe to recommend as a all-in-one device. *crosses fingers and prays this is actually a carried device and doesn't go the way of the N95*
My god that interface is sexy and thank god there not ripping of another certain companies interface.
This phone equals me wanting it
Good job Sony Ericsson, you've been making good phones, but this is something else awesome, then again, maybe im speaking to soon, lets wait and hope for some good real world reviews
Why? I love the form factor, but in terms of software, it looks to me like they've just added a glorified app launcher. You know what your calendar and e-mail program looks like - I think clearly designed icons and labels would do the job a lot more clearly, especially on a 3 inch screen.
I'm a fan of many Sony products, like my PS3, but in terms of software, Sony seems to always focus on attention-seeking, flashy features instead of solidly programmed, sensible core features. Yeah, features like Linux-readiness, folding@home and the (mediocre) internet browser on the PS3 and Skype on the PSP are cool, but I always get the feeling that they're vain attempts to offer some competing features for the quality core functionality of their competition (like MS's Xbox Live and the excellent Media Center integration in their 360). So I'm skeptical that this will add much to the typical WiMo6 experience. If you pair this hardware, with what we've seen of WiMo7, though, I think it would be sweet.
What a stupid question. For starters it will allow you to do a whole lot of stuff you can't do with the iphone like:
Install 3rd party software. Transfer content over bluetooth. Choose what ever file you want to use a ringtone. Expend your memory. Film with the camera.
Wow, really? Those flying, spinning panels manage to do all that?? That truly is revolutionary! To think that a little panel can install 3rd party software, expand your memory, AND let you use any file as a ringtone! Amazing!
Oh yeah, this is what I was waiting for, no let's hope it doesn't take to long to release it. As than I have to get an other phone betweene my current one and this one.
Have you ever used a smartphone? Low powered handheld devices generally don't respond that quickly, If this video is real and not a mock up it's pretty impressive.
the fact that I'm not blown away by shiny blinky does not mean I do not own a smart phone. I dunno, I guess as a programmer I know it really doesn't take that much cpu power to do a few simple xy tweens. xscale cpu or not. it's less a matter of sony doing micracles, and more a matter of for ONCE someone, somewhere hired a programmer that knew a thing or two.
So every phone programmer before has been inexperienced and done a bad job? If only we could clone you so we could put the best programmer to work on all our products. You sound like an arrogant asshole.
probably due to the fact some days I AM an arrogant asshole. ;)
honestly, use your noggin for one second, you're telling me I'M arrogant for saying that 400mhz (xscale or not) should easily be able to move a couple objects a few frames.
YES, any program that can't handle this would have to be inefficently made.
All I need is 256MB of RAM and 256MB of ROM. The rest can be taken care by using microSDHC cards (up to 32GB). I don't need to be limited by internal memory.
This is running on top of WM right? Let's hurry up and get this shiz out so we can hack it to run on the rest of our WM phones as was done with the Touch's interface.
So this isn't like a proof of concept or just a prototype that will never make it into production is it? If it is going to be a real thing, and it does have some productive applications, then I might actually go back to Sony Ericsson phones.
i'm digging the form factor of the phone. if you didn't notice, the slide is curved to tilt the screen toward you while using the keyboard. the 800x480 screen is a huge bonus; most smartphones are only using QVGA, which is kinda lame at this point.
_in my opinion_, big touch screen + sliding QWERTY keyboard is the best form factor. as such i would probably take this over the iPhone.
nice but only 3 inch screen? pretty pointlesss for watching movies on. Also rubbish storage. How is this an iphone killer? the iphone now has 16gb on board, and all this can manage is a 3 inch screen and an micro sd slot, hardly groundbreaking. Typical sony ericsson, always slightly off the pace. Windows mobile is also a step down in my opinion, very average clunky operating system. the screen is also only 65,000 colours, could they not manage the standard 16 million? I don't care what the interface is like.....this is boring. Bring on the M8!
Storage is expandable with microSDHC cards (up to 32GB). Would you like your laptop RAM/hard drive to be soldered to the motherboard just like the iPhone so you can't replace or expand?
It has 3G, 3.2MP camera with video recording, A2DP, FM radio, MMS, copy-n-paste, and aGPS. What does the iPhone have again?
Windows Mobile is a step down? Right, because it's not like having tons of 3rd party apps available is useful to anybody in their right mind. And you're right, I'd much rather have 16 GB on board than have the option of getting up to 32 GB expansions later. Because, when you get right down to it, all I do with my PDA is watch movies on it. I don't ever use it for looking up medical information, managing my schedule, editing documents, practicing presentations, or other things, because really all I need is a portable media player.
Some people just cant say anything else than iphone in this blog. I would take card slot any day than got stuck on 8gb or anything. Agree with 65k thought just absolutely horrible compare Nokia's 16 million color screens to this and screen looks so washed out. Yes i know that 16 is a bit of marketing from Nokia dont think theres difference with 4 million to 16.
Shame as the screen seem perfect winmo comes and limits it. Dont get why they havent changed it. This is the main prob and the fact that i havent used winmo for years, but i'm ready to give it one try for this phone ;)
euhm your argument is silly, i'd prefer an iphone with no memory at all With a cardslot then what they offer right now.. removable cards are way easier and less expensive
exactly! the Iphone forces everyone to have a minimum of 4gigabytes! because APPLE believe that everyone is an apple customer that uses iTunes and has shitloads of music.
whereas the truth is closer to the majority of people only need less than a gigabye to store almost anything they want to install. be it apps, a few albums, or maybe a movie. then for the rest of the MINORITY that want to use it as a mediaplayer....oh look there's an OPTIONAL (keyword) expansion slot.....see apple? don't force a standard on people because you want to turn everyone into itunes zombies.
This phone is sick, id rather have this then my iphone, good job sony eric-, a phone that has touch screen & still other ways to use it without touch. and it has 3G!!!, finnaly, hopefully its not as slow as the HTC, that was a big turn down when it comes to cellphones
3rd party apps fair enough. But do you know how much a 16gb micro sdhc card costs? oh hold on......they don't even make them yet. And when they finally start making them they will be expensive. I agree that removable memory is better though in theory. If you are a business user this phone will probably be better than the iphone. But for multimedia I still think 3.5 inches is the minimum for a pleasurable movie viewing experience.
Did you forget that you got modded down last time? Seriously, not everyone wants to use their phone for watching movies. Some of us own already PSPs for that.
Also I just don't think this phone is partiularly innovative or has any new intresting features. How does this phone destinguish itself from any other smart phone apart form maybe the high screen res?
apart from....: * the VERY hi-rez screen * the 400megs on-board storage. (out of all the hundreds of smartphones few have more than 256megabytes for the user to use freely. * the tilting sensitivity * the full keyboard (still a minority of phones have any qwerty keyboard.) * the touch pad OPTICAL mouse input (didn't read about that did you? know your shit before you talk smack) * 3G..yeah that's right. ready for a decent worldwide standard instead of companies like apple bringing out their iPhone with some decent hardware, then crippling it with a complete lack of useful standards like 3G and 3rd party apps. no locked in battery * i bet Sony aren't dumb enough to charge $20 for firmware updates either. (APPLE like to charge for tiny updates, like for the iPhone...or even adding WI-FI "n" t one of their products. have you EVER heard of a company charging for a bios update?)
so yeah...i guess if you ignore all the differences, this is exactly the same as every other phone you've seen...
You cannot be serious. First of all, for a phone to be amazing--as this one clearly is--it does not have to have a brand new feature; a phone can be amazing simply by having a great many feature in one small, aesthetically pleasing device.
You show me another phone with quad band GSM, quad band HSPA, a 3.2MP auto focus camera, touch screen, optical joy stick, GPS, WLAN, 400MB internal memory with microSD expansion, and slide out QWERTY keyboard.
Finally an interface that isn't a direct iPhone rip-off that actually looks great. Love how the 'panels' move. If they can make the rest of the interface as nice and easy to use as it looks, then this looks to be a fantastic phone. However, one thing the iPhone does have thats great is the easy syncing and management of content between your phone and your computer(via iTunes), while I'm sure this phone won't have anything near Apple, here's hoping that something decent can be offered.
they ripped apple on the promo, having just the device and a black background, which i think is also the wrong way to go, the soundtrack also apes apples use of very bad emerging indie artists, even worse it's a watered down cover!
i'd expect a little better of sony's marketing dept after the bravia ads
having said that the device looks okay, the keyboard will be handy
I am hoping for the 3.5mm jack as well and could not find it on the images, but gsmarena is reporting that it is included (not sure how they know though).
What a stupid question. For starters it will allow you to do a whole lot of stuff you can't do with the iphone like:
Install 3rd party software. Transfer content over bluetooth. Choose what ever file you want to use a ringtone. Expend your memory. Film with the camera.
Sam Winter, you keep saying the iPhone will have these features at a later date or when hacked, all WinMo phones have these capabilities out of the box (video capture, of course, varies from device to device...though I cannot recall one with a camera that cannot capture video).
Saying that the iPhone can do it when jail broken is like strapping an iPhone to a blender and saying it can make smoothies, too.
You are a little iPhone bitch. If you are even correct about your assumptions, which all rely on the release of the SDK and apple actually giving up some of its control to other people, like thats gonna happen. The point is these are all options that should have been included at launch. The abilities mentioned should have been included in the first place, and it shouldn't have taken a bunch of hackers to create these functions for widespread use. The only reason apple is doing this is because of the widespread support for such improvements and that fact that Apple realizes the money it can make providing these options.
Apple shouldn't be crippling their devices so customers are screwed out of a decent phone. If you're gonna do that then as a company you're no better than ... wait a minute ... Sony?!?!
iPhone haters, can you please STFU? It's so boring. Why not compare this new offering with what obviously prompted its development in a neutral manner? You are free to choose another phone, why be so negative?
Sam is saying these iPhone features will be available in 2 weeks. The Xperia ships "second half of 2008" which is at least 4-5 months away. So it's a valid comment.
This is pretty significant as it's the first batch of SE WinMobile devices. And WinMobile's attempt at catching up with the sexiness of the iPhone interface... I have said from the beginning only Microsoft has the software firepower to catch up quickly, and looks like they are doing it.
I am happy for new competition & I hope this will be good. I can't really see much from the Video though, I'd really have to use this phone to see if it is good. HTC touch was out even before the iPhone but usability was sorely disappointing.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
That is my next phone.
rediculo-hot. i'll take one please, in army green, thank you.
Bye bye iphone, meizu, LG, Nokia touchscreen ect. My dream phone is here!!
Army green and orange!
but but nuviphone?
I want to see the web browser in action first, if it's zoomable then I'm sold.
my god .. this thing is pretty damn nice!
In one of the picture, I saw that it also uses the stylus touch pen.
Anyone got any idea when this phone will be coming out? I hope it won't be longer than the 7 months I waited for the w960!
@Johan S
It runs Windows Mobile, Opera Mobile 9.5 is almost out, so, yes it does has zoom.

Geeze, that thing looks so much better than my practically-a-reference-design Apache...
Abuzar: make that army green and safety orange, I don't want to get shot
@michael
I don't believe for a second you own an iPhone. You are most likely a fanboy trying to to look cool. But you go ahead with your windows mobile. I'll buy your iPhone from you.
Let's just hope they supply the right drivers....*coughs* HTC *coughs*
I definitely want to see some quick rotation going on on this device.
i hear ya man!
if it performs like the ad shows then all looks good, otherwise look forward to SONYERICSSONCLASSACTION.ORG.
it seems to have have some motion sensing too, judging by the rotation of the screen when tilted...interesting.
I work at AT&T and I have gone from being an advocate of HTC devices to a salesperson who always recommends an alternative with better performing software (for the average user, that's normally the iPhone). This phone might finally give me something in the WM universe to recommend as a all-in-one device. *crosses fingers and prays this is actually a carried device and doesn't go the way of the N95*
that looks pretty sweet.
windows mobile too. i may get one when my contract runs out in dec ;)
I agree the phone looks sweet but the windows mobile part freezes me right off, symbian, linux or anything else would be a great alternative
This can't be WM!!!
Even on the high end devices (Tilt) screen rotation is slow and jerky.
I hope this new UI will also come to my HTC Touch. But my guess is anything with the likes of an Omap processor is out of the question.
Well, the video does not show much but from whatever it DOES show, it looks cool. I just cant wait to see that 800X480 pixel screen!
Have a look at this real-life video of the phone in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MY4ay99Xc9w
It really DOES look like its supposed to from the promo video! Incredible
fades are inefficient. They could just make the screen instantly go horizontal/vertical but no. They have to 1 up the iPhone. Rubbish.
And if it didn't do that, would you call it rubbish for not being as good?
Hypocrite.
Do you hate iPhone competition that much?
It runs windows how can it be competition?
Yes of course trying to be better than the competition is rubbish. Idiot.
My god that interface is sexy and thank god there not ripping of another certain companies interface.
This phone equals me wanting it
Good job Sony Ericsson, you've been making good phones, but this is something else awesome, then again, maybe im speaking to soon, lets wait and hope for some good real world reviews
So hot... I really do hope O2 will carry this or it will be one expensive simfree purchase for me. Not that I care, it will probably be worth it!
Color me impressed (well as much as one can be by such a short video). :)
Why? I love the form factor, but in terms of software, it looks to me like they've just added a glorified app launcher. You know what your calendar and e-mail program looks like - I think clearly designed icons and labels would do the job a lot more clearly, especially on a 3 inch screen.

Woo Hoo! An iPhone alternative!!! Now Microsoft just needs to put out the ZunePhone with 3D touch interface and trump this. :-P
3D touch sounds awesome, but I think someone would have to invent a volumetric display of some kind that you can actually touch first.
Oh you meant a 3D GUI that uses a touch interface? My bad.
pretty darn impressive!
how many gigs of storage does it have again?
400 megs + whatever micro sd card you put in...
if you guys want the full video it's on www.xperia.com
Meh, it's just a whole bunch of a paper plane flying around besides what you see here.
Uh...so what exactly does it DO besides have panels fly around the screen and look pretty?
Well it's a Windows Mobile device, so I am guessing that panel interface is either a shortcut launcher or task switcher.
What a stupid question. For starters it will allow you to do a whole lot of stuff you can't do with the iphone like:
Install 3rd party software.
Transfer content over bluetooth.
Choose what ever file you want to use a ringtone.
Expend your memory.
Film with the camera.

Oh yeah, this is what I was waiting for, no let's hope it doesn't take to long to release it. As than I have to get an other phone betweene my current one and this one.
so, things that move make people clap? I feel like I'm in a room with 3 yr olds all giddy because something shiny.
maybe it was the man beast woman that set me on edge, but a few movign icons are not enough to impress me.
Have you ever used a smartphone? Low powered handheld devices generally don't respond that quickly, If this video is real and not a mock up it's pretty impressive.

Anyway, I'm glad they chose the expansion slot route instead of the internal memory route. Internal memory can jack up a phone's price pretty quickly.
This is running on top of WM right? Let's hurry up and get this shiz out so we can hack it to run on the rest of our WM phones as was done with the Touch's interface.

More memory will be pretty much pointless if Spotify gets released for mobile phones, which absolutely isn't impossible.
HSDPA(X1) + Spotify = heaven
I'm not sure if the 65K is a screen limitation or purposely limited so the graphics would respond more quickly.

Isn´t the hype always about iTunes, Apple and the Beatles?
Sorry, I'm not feeling the love of this thing.
why is this lowest ranked? is no one allowed to not like it?

I could carry two 8GB microSDHC cards and it cost me less than $150 for both.
Did you forget that you got modded down last time? Seriously, not everyone wants to use their phone for watching movies. Some of us own already PSPs for that.
Sony just started production of 16gb MEMSTICKS........its cheaper to put that than have on board 16 gigs which u can NEVER EXPAND !!

having said that the device looks okay, the keyboard will be handy
So wait, *nobody* else is allowed to use indie artists? Isn't that the main idea of being indie?
At any rate, the music was not to my liking, but it helped emphasize the device a bit better.
I like it a lot better than that damned "1,2,3,4" thing for the nano.
Wait! Windows Mobile, standard USB connector, standard micro-SDHC support, HSUPA... On a Sony Ericsson? Wow :)
Imagine my surprise when I read that!? :)
sheet!
yeah i forgot about the STANDARD USB connector.
add that to my list above.
I am sure that HTC makes it for them.
Probably will be lacking a 3.5mm port for proper phones and mic, however.
I am hoping for the 3.5mm jack as well and could not find it on the images, but gsmarena is reporting that it is included (not sure how they know though).

Armageddon FTW!
What a stupid question. For starters it will allow you to do a whole lot of stuff you can't do with the iphone like:
Install 3rd party software.
Transfer content over bluetooth.
Choose what ever file you want to use a ringtone.
Expend your memory.
Film with the camera.
"Install 3rd party software."
WRONG. iPhone SDK will be out in two weeks...
"Transfer content over bluetooth."
iPhone can already do this jailbroken. SDK will make this native in two weeks..
"Choose what ever file you want to use a ringtone."
iPhone can already do this jailbroken. SDK will make this native in two weeks.
"Film with the camera."
I assume you mean capture video. This will be available on the iPhone with the SDK in two weeks.
These things *aren't* natively supported.
you forgot to argue against these: keyboard, 3G, expandable memory,...
@Sam Winter
That is so freaking hot, def my next phone. and i thought my w810i was nice!
