Apple releases OS X 10.5.2 update, tons of fixes
It's a good day for Leopard users, the latest update (10.5.2) is finally being released, and weighs in at a mighty 180MB+ (some are reporting theirs is over 300MB). As expected this update has a TON of fixes, including stuff in Active Directory, AirPort, BTMM, Dashboard, Dock, Finder, iCal, iChat, iSync, Mail, Preview, Safari, Time Machine, and more -- the choicer of we'll be publishing after the break. Go on, indulge yourself.
P.S. -Oh, purists, you'll definitely love the fact that you can now (finally) turn off menu bar transparency. Score one for the team. (It's in the desktop and screen saver system pref pane.)
P.P.S. -It would appear there's also a second update, the Leopard Graphics Update (about 50MB) which comes through once you've installed 10.5.2. No word on what that one does yet. Thanks, amidamaruflame.
Some of those fixes:
AirPort: Improves connection reliability and stability, more.
Dashboard: Widget performance improvements (as in Dictionary), more.
Dock: Updates Stacks with a list view and folder view options, and an updated background for grid view.
Mail: Improved data detector accuracy, hurts Growl users in disabling GrowlMail version 1.1.2 or earlier (to avoid issues), but also has tons of other fixes.
RAW support: Now supports more RAW formats / cameras (presumably more on Apple's site).
Time Machine: Adds a menu bar option for accessing Time Machine features (the menu extra can be enabled in Time Machine preferences), among other things.

Anyone notice that when you go on Finder and click "About Finder" it says that you are running on Finder version 10.5.3??
(runbing on intel MBP, just updated)
Todd @ Feb 11th 2008 9:48PM
Really, I'm pleasantly shocked! I've managed to read the first 15 or so comments without any "hater" comments (though I dare not read further and upset my illusion harmony). While it lasts, enjoy the experience!
psxp @ Feb 11th 2008 4:14PM
wow.. big update!!
Is there a full documented list of fixes somewhere?

DMG @ Feb 11th 2008 4:36PM
My update is 341 MB, a lot of people on macrumors are saying the same thing.
Sierra2 @ Feb 11th 2008 4:43PM
P.S. My download was 341MB (Dual-2.0GHz PPC G5). Could just be the PowerPC platform (installed from 10.5.1 retail).
Also, when you get to the grey Apple logo and pinwheel, mine restarted just like one of the Tiger upgrades...twice (though that may have to do with the metric ass ton of Canon printer drivers Apple so graciously provided me with [gotta pay more attention]).
macona @ Feb 11th 2008 5:33PM
My update (intel) is 180megs.
Sierra2 @ Feb 11th 2008 5:46PM
P. (whatever).
Run Software Update again...there's a "Leopard Graphics Update 1.0"
JJV @ Feb 13th 2008 3:20PM

brianlee @ Feb 11th 2008 4:15PM
Yay!
Scottie @ Feb 11th 2008 4:16PM
This big update will make the MBA a lot heavier!
Justin B @ Feb 11th 2008 4:16PM
Time to reinstall baby.
PINE @ Feb 11th 2008 4:37PM
You do an entire reinstall when an update comes out?
Justin B @ Feb 11th 2008 4:43PM
I had moved to Tiger because Leopard was far too unstable.
Liam @ Feb 11th 2008 6:42PM
Really? What programs are you using? I haven't had any issues at all, but I've downloaded this anyway.
rp @ Feb 11th 2008 7:45PM
I've had some stability issues with Leopard also, although performance initially seemed pretty good.
Problems:
1) Dock disappears randomly, sometimes changing the auto-hide preference to ON (I always have it off), but won't come back until later (randomly) or restarting the dock via terminal
2) Random pinwheels, occasionally leading to total crash
3) General application slowdown
4) Major app launch slowdown... reminds me of my Lombard, and this is a dual 2 ghz G5
Hopefully, this thing will work those issues out.
alc @ Feb 14th 2008 10:07AM
I had the same problems. Then I've formated the HDD with the Extended Journaled (HFS Plus) and now everything works fine. Don't forget to backup first
Ben @ Feb 11th 2008 4:16PM
When are they going to release the Apple TV update? I want to rent movies!
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 11th 2008 4:16PM
It just works... lol... J/k, please dont flame me...
(DISCLAIMER: Im not saying any other competitor is better or worse, just making fun of their slogan.)
Stimpski @ Feb 11th 2008 4:46PM
It still just works. What's your point?
Dale @ Feb 11th 2008 4:58PM
How's Vista treating you?
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 11th 2008 5:01PM
First, If it just worked, you wouldnt need a massive update to fix bugs... Secondly I specifically stated that I wasn't claiming either of the "Big 3" was superior to another. Also, who said I used Vista?
It, afterall was a joke, don't be so dense.
slacks @ Feb 11th 2008 5:54PM
Yea, but every time an update comes out engadget readers have to hear the same joke. So, I guess people are kind of tired of hearing it. I just wish people would get tired of saying it...
Ignatius @ Feb 11th 2008 6:09PM
People won't get tired of saying it til Apple fanboys stop worshiping the ground that Steve Jobs walks on.
Take off the fanboy goggles and realize that both OSes share their own set of issues. Just because a company says the product is flawless or better than another does not make it true.
OSX is not perfect, Windows Vista is not perfect. Plain and simple fact of life.
lhawes @ Feb 11th 2008 6:21PM
@ Ignatius
Amen
zevdawg @ Feb 11th 2008 6:27PM
What about linux?
slacks @ Feb 11th 2008 6:35PM
@Ignatius
eh, whatever. Some people like the OS, or else they wouldn't use it. I don't know about worshiping steve jobs, but If it didn't work well enough for 5 or 8 percent (or whatever it's up to) of the market, they would have ditched it by now.
I don't think anyone would ever argue that an OS is perfect, and I don't know many people that takes any companies slogan as fact. I wouldn't get so bent out of shape about it, really. I don't think any apple users are out to get any windows or linux users. Just use whatever you like. :-)
Andrew Campbell @ Feb 11th 2008 7:30PM
@SIC TR4NSIT: If you post a useless comment, you're going to get useless replies. Not knowing this simple fact makes you the dense one in this case.
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 11th 2008 9:51PM
Andrew Campbell>> Im not going to take advice on the subject of being dense from a guy with 90% of his posts either slamming Microsoft or praising Apple...
Oh, and my girlfriend says your moms dense....
SWK595 @ Feb 12th 2008 2:52PM
Your inflatable girlfriend's wit doesn't quite surpass my chia pet. Try again.
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 12th 2008 4:13PM
Yes, inflatable, thats it... Nobody has a sense of humor anymore... All you macfanboys try to do is convert people and you just end up looking like assholes. You troll to recruit, but all you do is drive people away. The macfanboys act holier than though. And that, my friends, is yet another reason why I will never buy a mac. Ill roll Kool-aid free with windows and linux thank you.
fahnboi @ Feb 12th 2008 6:06PM
geez.. and i thought you were "joking"? guess you exposed yourself as a hypocritical troller. ah well.
Scottie @ Feb 11th 2008 4:20PM
Yes, finally. That means the new MBPs are on their way. Possibly tomorrow!!!!
stunta @ Feb 11th 2008 4:20PM
So does this update contain stuff that should have been in the original release in the first place? Oh wait, that question is only valid for non-Apple OSes.
Jon @ Feb 11th 2008 6:34PM
Wait, last i checked, it was the non apple os's that didnt charge you for the itouch update, and the wireless N firmware.
bondsbw @ Feb 11th 2008 10:06PM
Jon...
Tell me exactly which OS vendor gives away a free iPod Touch update. I kind of thought Apple was in charge of that.
And while we're at it... which OS vendor gives away free firmware that upgrades network cards advertised as Wireless-G to Wireless-N? And since OS vendors don't tend to do that, which hardware vendor even does that?
JJV @ Feb 11th 2008 11:35PM
@ Jon
Last time I checked those no other company could even get close to the popularity of the iPod. And most companies don't even include Wireless N as standard you still have to pay a 100$ for the adapter to be built in. So which would you have rather payed? 2.99$ or 100+$?
monkfishbandana @ Feb 12th 2008 5:11AM
@ bondsbw & JJV
Fools. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jon was just pointing out that Apple charged for the updates unnecessarily; he wasn't actually saying that other vendors gave them out for free. You'd think I'd get bored of laughing at people missing the point, wouldn't you - but I don't.
Oh, and JJV, what the heck does the iPod's popularity have to do with the argument? Oh, and I own many Apple products, love them, and still find fanboys annoying.
Ryan L. @ Feb 11th 2008 4:21PM
Fixes? I thought it was supposed to be perfect to begin with?
caleb @ Feb 11th 2008 4:35PM
Apple users are way too picky for everything to ever be perfect.
Ian @ Feb 11th 2008 6:01PM
o man dude what is perfect? has anything ever been perfect? if it was perfect it would never crash, never run out of battery (laptops), never need updating. fuck man if people say apple is perfect then id hate to see what they think is imperfect.
written on a mac, by someone who likes his mac.
B.C. @ Feb 11th 2008 6:47PM
Re: caleb "Apple users are way too picky for everything to ever be perfect."
Thats it exactly. I'm way to picky to bother with all the headaches and problems when using a PC; I think this is the same for many. It's this picky-ness/fastidiousness of Apple users that keeps pressure on them to make a good product.
Most people that use a Mac were PC users that got fed up and switched.
Anonymous @ Feb 11th 2008 8:48PM
@ caleb
If I pay $3000 for a laptop it better be perfect!
jbhitter24 @ Feb 11th 2008 4:21PM
oh i see they're not charging this time around?
thephotoman @ Feb 11th 2008 6:05PM
They don't charge for bugfixes, only for major releases: 10.5 was something you had to pay for, but once you've bought it, the update to 10.5.1 (or 10.5.2) is free.
slacks @ Feb 11th 2008 5:54PM
Nope, "service pack" updates are free, just like for most commercial operating systems.
CharlieX @ Feb 11th 2008 4:22PM
Leopard! Now with more Cat!
