Fan-made PSP mockup is far sexier than the real thing will ever be
Good gawd y'all, we don't normally bother with fan renders and mockups, but excepting the awkward placement of the L and R triggers there's almost nothing about this PSP re-visioning that leaves us wanting. Gank that UMD, add some flash memory, and this is our be-all end-all fantasy portable gaming device -- that will likely never ever be made.

I think Ryan's clever use of vocabulary effected your quick - and incorrect - response.
In front of the whole class too...
Brad, I believe you mean 'affected'?
Verb
to effect
1. To make or bring about; to implement.
no, Brad means effected, just as he said.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/effect
see definition 10 (the verb definition).
"Effect" is a noun. "Affect" is a verb.
So that makes Ben right. Sorry, Brad.
Actually, effect can be a verb as well. Haven't you ever heard the phrase "to effect change"? Effect means to cause or bring about, and affect means to change.
It's "affect change". Effect is noun and Affect is verb.
Effect can be used as a verb. Also read the comments before you make a fool of yourself. (I mean seriously it's like maybe the tenth comment down it doesn't take much to read a few posts.) And affect change would mean to change change idiot, it's effect change, as in to bring about or start change.
Unless I'm mistaken, Ben was alluding to this http://xkcd.com/326/
It could just be me seeing xkcd where none exists, though.
not only is 'effect' not always a noun, 'affect' is not always a verb.
Any Psych majors in the house?
is it just me or does the difference between effect and affect seem kind of trivial... I mean that that PSP thingy is schweet...
and this would be WHY I posted a link to a dictionary article, to save the pointless back and forth. Brad is exactly right in his use of effect. Check link. Done.
9bit's link was hilarious, tho. 8^D
no, they're correct - excepting. (e.g. "except for", rather than "agreeing to")
@9bit
teeheehee
I bet it will play doom!
(ok, ok, I apologize. I'll be good from now on)
The real question is, will it run linux?
But... WILL IT BLEND?
/sarcasm
this made my heart skip a beat.
Sorry to double post, but this is one of the best renderings I've ever seen. Excellent work.
Swap the position of the sticks with select/start and you've got yourself a winner.
Forget UMD, judging by the size of that you could stuff BluRay in there!
Wow.
It looks beautiful, but am I the only one with large hands that kind of enjoys having the controls on the side of the screen?
I already can't play my DS for more than maybe an hour or two at a time, and that's with barely needing to use the shoulder buttons since so few DS games are action or platform, the PSP on the other hand has quite a few racing, fighting, action, etc games.
You know what they say, large hands, small .....
Kneecaps? Toes? Libido?
I'M IN SUSPENSE GOD DAMNIT HELP ME
... large hands, small...
Pens
Its a right pain, you can never find one the right size.
Just you wait, sometime in 2020s, Engadget will be featuring this as KIRF MLCXII against the virtual reality psp6
Let me be the first to say
HOT DAMN.
Let me be the second to say
HOT DAMN.
I'll be a late coming third on that Hot Damn!!
Asha, I think it is clear that you killed that joke well.
In the best interest of all those involved,
let me also be the last to say
HOT DAMN.
I would buy if it looked like that.
Me too, but it won't.
Seems like it would be top heavy (i.e. stress on the wrists trying to hlod it up AND play at the same time).
http://www.alliwantforxmasisads.com/nintendo-ds-lite.jpg
Oh, come on, the DS Lite is lovely in the hands. You must simply have limp wrists.
I agree that it would be top heavy. It'd be better if the keypads slid out to the sides as opposed to down.
There is a big difference between the DS and this PSP mockup. The DS has a screen between the pads as well as 75% of the weight of components (CPU/Memory/ETC). This PSP mockup looks like it has more than 50% of the weight above the keypads, thus causing it to constantly want to fall forward.
well, as long as we're dreaming, make the chassis and case out of carbon fiber RP. make the screen cover polycarbonate, and voila, no more wrist problems.
theres not a button there that will fuck you over. Sony doesn't ship anything unless theres a built in way to eventually fuck you over.
If it still has UMD, does that count?
It has a memory stick. Close enough...
Hell, Sony fucking you over aside, I'm just glad to see Mr. Block admitting to wanting to hump something other than an Apple for once.
i don't even think thats possible to close with the buttons there lol
You could. The buttons are shallow enough that as long as the base has some clearance it should be able to slide over it.
Well to me, it looks like there would be a recess under the screen, as in it wouldn't be perfectly flush against the base, but the sides of the top half still wrap around the base, producing a properly-closed appearance.
build in a sim card slot
iphone is going into my trash can
You'd look a bit strange, to say the least, talking into that.
Not if it had built in skype with support for video. Then you'd just look like a stud.
Delicious.
PHOTOSHOPPED
Uh... nevermind.
You can tell by the pixels?
what gave it away? was it the fact that it isn't being produced or word "fan made mock-up" on the title of the article?
I hope... he was being sarcastic, and all you lot have jumped down his throat for no good reason.
Otherwise... I despair at the world.
LMAO!
LMAO!
this comment made my day
hahahahaha
Denied. That is an un-ergonomic mess even worse than the original DS. That's more suited for a cell phone than a gaming machine.
Just look at the position your thumbs would have to be to use the thumbsticks. My thumbs would fall off screaming in agony.
The PSP is dead sexy as it is.
Yank UMD? Yea, remove the ability to play games, moron.
And it already has flash memory. That's what memorystick is.
Yeaaah those thumbsticks look like sheer torture.
Sorry charlie...
"That is an un-ergonomic mess even worse than the original DS."
Just goes to show what you know. Of the portables this generation, the original DS is easily the most comfortable to use for long periods of time. It is the most ergonomic of the modern portables, even more ergonomic than the DS Lite.
"Yank UMD? Yea, remove the ability to play games, moron."
Obviously the design would include the ability to purchase digital versions of games, instead of being forced to carry around UMDs. UMDs eat more power than games played off of ROMs or Flash memory, and are more prone to breaking due to moving parts.
"And it already has flash memory. That's what memorystick is."
And you don't think it would be an improvement to include any form of internal storage into the unit itself?
"The PSP is dead sexy as it is."
"I believe we made the most beautiful thing in the world. Nobody would criticize a renowned architect's blueprint that the position of a gate is wrong. It's the same as that."- Ken Kutaragi
Wow, looks like you've been drinking Ken's Kool-Aid.
@Kamalot:
This would be more of a PSP2 kind of deal then. To get rid of UMD would mean either reimbursing people who own the UMDs (a send-UMD-in-then-you-can-download program of sorts?) or just saying "screw you." And I don't think Sony wants to deal with that mess.
But those thumbsticks are still terrible. Pick up anything rectangular and move your thumbs down there. That for a half an hour would be rough.
Why not? Sony says "Screw You" to their consumers all the time. I can't make any sense of it, they screw them over so much and get away with it. This doesn't even really have to do totally with the Playstation part of the company, the entire company does it.
i agree. it might look good but it would be a pain to play that thing .. literally. definately an un-ergonomic mess. lol.
i think the psp is a really well designed console apart from a few things.
1 extended play does cause stress a lot like , but not as bad as, playing an 8 bit/16 bit concole. maybe the should make the whole thing like the dual shock controller . but then it wouldnt be as pocketable. catch 22
2 the analog nub is no good . i beleive this is the sole reason the psp isnt as hot as the ds. two anolog nubs and everyone would know exactly what the control schme is and it would result in superior gamdplay. metal gear po was ruined for me because of this problem.
3 err... there is no 3, infact disregard number 1 also , because thats nit picking, so really all it needs is another analog stick .
@Kamalot & Shiba
"Just goes to show what you know. Of the portables this generation, the original DS is easily the most comfortable to use for long periods of time. I"
No, I've owned one. It is by far the most un-ergonomic handheld ever. Due to a combination of it's bulk, and being designed to be held with one hand while the other uses the touchscreen in the majority (yes, I know not all, but still the majority) of games
This fact alone undeniably makes the DS the worst system ergonomically.
The DS Lite is better cause its smaller, so more of it fits in your hand properly, and weighs less.
"Obviously the design would include the ability to purchase digital versions of games"
Which is stupid
1) All the UMDs we own are now useless
2) That depends on the user to buy enough storage to hold all their games. There aren't memorysticks/sdcards large enough to hold all my PSP games
3) Developers will be pressured by publishers to lower filesizes (by sacrificing quality in assets like textures/fmvs, lowering the amount of levels, removing voice acting, etc) to appeal to the lowest common denominator. No publisher wants their target audience limited cause the game takes a whole memory stick
Thus defeating the entire point of UMD in the first place
Any moron trying to axe UMD knows NOTHING about actual game development. UMD was chosen for many reasons. The main being huge capacity + extremely low cost. A 1.8 gig UMD costs less than a dollar to make. A 64 meg DS card costs over $20 last I checked. That's a huge difference in cost/capacity. We wouldn't have PS2-level of quality games without UMD.
"And you don't think it would be an improvement to include any form of internal storage into the unit itself?"
No. It'd be a waste. And it introduces needless complexity to game development. Devs shouldn't have to check multiple storage locations. It's just like Sony including 32 meg sticks with launch PSPs. You never use it anyway. Leave internal memory for the firmware.
"Wow, looks like you've been drinking Ken's Kool-Aid."
No, it means I like the way PSP looks. God forbid someone like it, cause everyone knows that's not allowed.
"Why not? Sony says "Screw You" to their consumers all the time"
No they don't.
Sony didn't have to let PS3 use flash cards as memory cards. They could have stuck to using proprietary ones. Same for bluetooth wireless headsets, letting us use standard hard drives, install linux, etc etc. The list goes on so long for PS3 and PSP you'd think they were designed by Linus Torvalds rather than a guy at Sony.

yea, UMD may be a failed movie format, but its perfect for a hand held console. The disc are allways stored in a protective sleeve, they are cheap to make, and they offer tons of storage. I dont care how cheap flash is, its not as cheap as UMD.
Yeah... but if you let players download games and pass the savings down the line... it might not be that bad after all.
You forgot to mention how in order to carry multiple games you need some sort of bag. And that the motor lowers the battery life. And it increases the size of the device. It's like arguing for a Walkman against a mp3 player.
What that guy said.
UMD is great in theory . . . but it sucks in reality because Sony's locked it down so hard. No writers, not even blank UMDs, and you can't use it on anything except the PSP. So much for the "U" in UMD.
Perfect my A$$! Besides not having any fun games, the other reason I sold my PSP was because of the HORRIBLE load times!!!! Try playing burnout on the PSP. You will spend almost 50% of the time on loading screens. Ridiculous!
"Besides not having any fun games"
If you check gamerankings/metacritic, PSP actually has a higher amount of high scoring games than the DS.
In short, anyone claiming PSP has no or little good/fun games is a fanboy moron who needs a DSectomy.
is there a manufacturer out there that can make a screen with no bezel?
No. It's technically impossible.
Oh I get it... it's the "Apple playstation", that's why apple was storing patents for a gaming platform!
Seriously, the guy who did this should have put his contact details on it.
Microsoft would be calling him by now to change the logo and rebrand it "Xbox Air".
I just want the "game" that's pictured on screen to be real!
I am almost positive that the game is Monster Hunter Freedom 2, it really exists for the PSP and it really looks that good.
I want!
I wish I could find any comments by the creator of this awesomeness.
Move the screen up more and make it tilt a la the AT&T Tilt, move the buttons up more, add media control buttons on top (for when you only slide up a bit when listening to music or watching a movie. Also, that makes this a good video player for a desk or table top. Bam, thank you, come again.
I want the PSP 2 to get its games from a steam like online store. Either that or mini blu-ray. I forgot to mention DAM, I WANT THAT!
the irony here is that's alot what i've heard the apple machine will be, except that touchzones will replace the dpad and allow rate of movement based analog simulation or tap based dpad simulation.
My vote for it's name, well, i'll register the domain then let you know, hahahah.
I hope someone from Apple or Microsoft is looking at this if Sonys' not interested.
wow that looks...really, really uncomfortable
This mock-up is amazing. Seriously, awesome job to the dude(s) who did this.
I totally would get a PSP (finally) if it was smaller and flash-based instead of frickin' UMD. But then how would you play the older PSP games?
Perhaps make a USB link function that allows you to save your old UMD games onto flash using an old PSP or a peripheral drive.
You can download PSP roms, you know. And it's technically legal if you already own the games.
Maybe then they'll just have old PSP games available on PSN that you can just download--that would save Sony a ton of money of packaging too, and maybe the games would be cheaper!
I'll take one in white thank you.
Ergonomic wise having the screen in the middle is my preference. It is something I like on the PSP, DS and classic GBA. The GBA SP was dead sexy, but it felt uncomfortable during long periods of usage. Not sure how I feel about the above fan mockup.
Having a bigger screen is good, but the PSP's screen is already huge. But I am still doubtful of having the face buttons too close to each other. Having the buttons exposed will also be better when watching videos or other tasks as it allows for quicker access.
So apart from making having the PSP look 'cleaner', personally I doubt the design above will provide better usability than the current design already does.
I don't know how it would have enough battery life in that tiny frame!
That must be one ultra-slim battery!
It IS simply beautiful though. I'd buy it today if it were less then $700
It's funny how people are trying to get relate this to the real world. It's a silly render. As impossible and perhaps impractical this is, it does have some nice ideas and design cues.
It looks a lot like a Nokia N810...
Your face looks a lot like a Nokia N810.
The design looks nice but few flaws:
It needs to slide a little bit higher as the up and triangle button is almost hidden.
Trigger buttons should be trigger buttons rather than side buttons.
As portable and way more "pocketable" that design may be, there's no ergonomics, maybe make it a bit more wider, allowing to also be widescreen?
Might as well add the analog button to complete the mock up of a PlayStation controller.
Select and Start buttons are too close to the Square and Right button.
All in all, I give A+ in effort but only A- ~ B+ in design.
Until you can design something better, STFU!
If it was on sale under £200, I'd go out and buy it now.
thing2k
God damn, that is beautiful.
Swap UMD with a blu-ray based mini-disc, add a phone interface, bluetooth/wifi, and that awesome looking panel application from the new Sony-Ericsson and you'd have an iPhone killer. Of course I'd love an OLED display too.
Maybe they could throw out the drive, and just download games through Playstation Network. I wonder how low they could get the price. Playing PS3 games wirelessly through it would be the best thing ever.
I thought Kyle always barfed when he saw someone(or thing) he liked.
