Fan-made PSP mockup is far sexier than the real thing will ever be
Good gawd y'all, we don't normally bother with fan renders and mockups, but excepting the awkward placement of the L and R triggers there's almost nothing about this PSP re-visioning that leaves us wanting. Gank that UMD, add some flash memory, and this is our be-all end-all fantasy portable gaming device -- that will likely never ever be made.

I bet it will play doom!
(ok, ok, I apologize. I'll be good from now on)
System48 @ Feb 11th 2008 2:29PM
The real question is, will it run linux?
Somaxman @ Feb 11th 2008 5:16PM
But... WILL IT BLEND?
System48 @ Feb 11th 2008 3:32PM

superfresh @ Feb 11th 2008 3:49PM
this made my heart skip a beat.
superfresh @ Feb 11th 2008 3:55PM
Sorry to double post, but this is one of the best renderings I've ever seen. Excellent work.
Swap the position of the sticks with select/start and you've got yourself a winner.
srw985 @ Feb 12th 2008 4:41AM
Forget UMD, judging by the size of that you could stuff BluRay in there!

Brad @ Feb 11th 2008 2:49PM
I think Ryan's clever use of vocabulary effected your quick - and incorrect - response.
ben @ Feb 11th 2008 2:58PM
In front of the whole class too...
Ben @ Feb 12th 2008 3:30PM
Brad, I believe you mean 'affected'?
Rhys @ Feb 12th 2008 11:25AM
Verb
to effect
1. To make or bring about; to implement.
MasterCKO @ Feb 11th 2008 5:20PM
no, Brad means effected, just as he said.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/effect
see definition 10 (the verb definition).
Smart People Play Tuba @ Feb 11th 2008 5:23PM
"Effect" is a noun. "Affect" is a verb.
So that makes Ben right. Sorry, Brad.
thethirdmoose @ Feb 11th 2008 6:03PM
Actually, effect can be a verb as well. Haven't you ever heard the phrase "to effect change"? Effect means to cause or bring about, and affect means to change.
Chris @ Feb 11th 2008 6:35PM
It's "affect change". Effect is noun and Affect is verb.
Rob Pribish @ Feb 11th 2008 6:50PM
Effect can be used as a verb. Also read the comments before you make a fool of yourself. (I mean seriously it's like maybe the tenth comment down it doesn't take much to read a few posts.) And affect change would mean to change change idiot, it's effect change, as in to bring about or start change.
9bit @ Feb 11th 2008 7:07PM
Unless I'm mistaken, Ben was alluding to this http://xkcd.com/326/
It could just be me seeing xkcd where none exists, though.
Eric @ Feb 11th 2008 7:42PM
not only is 'effect' not always a noun, 'affect' is not always a verb.
Any Psych majors in the house?
Ewoks FTW @ Feb 12th 2008 3:13AM
is it just me or does the difference between effect and affect seem kind of trivial... I mean that that PSP thingy is schweet...
MasterCKO @ Feb 12th 2008 5:47AM
and this would be WHY I posted a link to a dictionary article, to save the pointless back and forth. Brad is exactly right in his use of effect. Check link. Done.
MasterCKO @ Feb 12th 2008 5:49AM
9bit's link was hilarious, tho. 8^D
Stumper @ Feb 12th 2008 8:35AM
no, they're correct - excepting. (e.g. "except for", rather than "agreeing to")

Wow.
LegendZ28 @ Feb 11th 2008 4:26PM
It looks beautiful, but am I the only one with large hands that kind of enjoys having the controls on the side of the screen?
I already can't play my DS for more than maybe an hour or two at a time, and that's with barely needing to use the shoulder buttons since so few DS games are action or platform, the PSP on the other hand has quite a few racing, fighting, action, etc games.
Khris @ Feb 11th 2008 4:38PM
You know what they say, large hands, small .....
LesbianHam @ Feb 11th 2008 5:12PM
Kneecaps? Toes? Libido?

Pens
Its a right pain, you can never find one the right size.
Macha88 @ Feb 11th 2008 9:31PM
Just you wait, sometime in 2020s, Engadget will be featuring this as KIRF MLCXII against the virtual reality psp6
Smart People Play Tuba @ Feb 11th 2008 2:27PM
Seems like it would be top heavy (i.e. stress on the wrists trying to hlod it up AND play at the same time).
danny @ Feb 11th 2008 2:45PM
http://www.alliwantforxmasisads.com/nintendo-ds-lite.jpg
Liam @ Feb 11th 2008 3:11PM
Oh, come on, the DS Lite is lovely in the hands. You must simply have limp wrists.
Taylor @ Feb 11th 2008 3:22PM
I agree that it would be top heavy. It'd be better if the keypads slid out to the sides as opposed to down.
There is a big difference between the DS and this PSP mockup. The DS has a screen between the pads as well as 75% of the weight of components (CPU/Memory/ETC). This PSP mockup looks like it has more than 50% of the weight above the keypads, thus causing it to constantly want to fall forward.
Seoultrain @ Feb 11th 2008 3:40PM
well, as long as we're dreaming, make the chassis and case out of carbon fiber RP. make the screen cover polycarbonate, and voila, no more wrist problems.
Boynamedsue @ Feb 11th 2008 2:27PM
theres not a button there that will fuck you over. Sony doesn't ship anything unless theres a built in way to eventually fuck you over.
Smart People Play Tuba @ Feb 11th 2008 2:32PM
If it still has UMD, does that count?
Liam @ Feb 11th 2008 3:16PM
It has a memory stick. Close enough...
Elliott @ Feb 11th 2008 5:46PM
Hell, Sony fucking you over aside, I'm just glad to see Mr. Block admitting to wanting to hump something other than an Apple for once.
Brooks @ Feb 11th 2008 2:28PM
I would buy if it looked like that.
mister XR @ Feb 12th 2008 11:01AM
Me too, but it won't.

Liam @ Feb 11th 2008 3:03PM
Let me be the second to say
HOT DAMN.
Asha @ Feb 11th 2008 3:18PM
I'll be a late coming third on that Hot Damn!!
computer.dude.28 @ Feb 11th 2008 9:43PM
Asha, I think it is clear that you killed that joke well.
MMalecky @ Feb 11th 2008 10:07PM
In the best interest of all those involved,
let me also be the last to say
HOT DAMN.
bacon @ Feb 11th 2008 2:30PM
i don't even think thats possible to close with the buttons there lol
Jon Doe. @ Feb 11th 2008 3:09PM
You could. The buttons are shallow enough that as long as the base has some clearance it should be able to slide over it.
Deed @ Feb 12th 2008 1:48PM
Well to me, it looks like there would be a recess under the screen, as in it wouldn't be perfectly flush against the base, but the sides of the top half still wrap around the base, producing a properly-closed appearance.
