Europeans looking for a lower-end GPS-equipped
HTC phone have another option today, in the form of the P3470, previously known as the
Pharos. While it only has quad-band EDGE and a 200MHz CPU, you can at least expect the usual complement of a 2 megapixel camera, 256MB ROM / 128MB RAM, microSD, Bluetooth 2.0, and a roomy enough 2.8-inch QVGA flush touchscreen (á la the Touch). It'll be out later this month on Orange in the UK, France, Spain, and the Netherlands, for €449 ($650 -- so much for the low-end price tag).
*throws out iPhone*
Gimme!
This or XPERIA ? Decisions decisions...
look closer, that doesn't have the flush touch screen. and at $650 wtf are they thinking? with those specs it shouldn't be more than $400 and that's without a contract.
That has the new Touch Flow... where is Touch Flow v2???
Why is it 90s Grey still?
you have one missed call
Anyone who has used a smartphone should look at the 200 MHz and shutter.
200 MHz is terrible for anything other than making and accepting calls, and.... that defeats the purpose of having a smartphone.
My $300 Wing (HTC Herra) has the same specs without the GPS but with a keyboard.
You should be able to overclock it to about 275MHz with easy to use freeware, makes a noticeable difference...
Overclocking to 275MHz is a uncivilized way to do things, compared to the manufacturer shipping the product with a proper processor to start with.
Motorola, Samsung, HTC's own higher end phones and iPhone all ship with much much better processors that do not need any overclocking to function smoothly.
Why should the customer bother with overclocking at this price?
This is a 'meh' phone for sure, slow cpu, bland looks and I think HTC really needs to start moving away from the QVGA screens. If the phone was on the lower end of the price spectrum I wouldn't knock it but at €449 its way too expensive, even with the built in GPS.
And the iPhone was criticized for "not being enough". This thing blows.
If you live in Europe, why the hell would you get this over the Touch Cruise? O_o
Microsoft should give HTC a call and tell them to stop producing smartphones with these sluggish 200Mhz cpu's. It just ruins great part of the Windows Mobile experience if you ask me, especially when combined with GPS functionality.
I so agree. One of the common complains about WinMo is that it feels slow to use, and does a horrible job of moving swifter.
Well guess what? It's not WinMo's fault, pin that on the hardware maker of your phone.
I really think WinMo is a nice versatile platform, and it runs great on my phone, but I hate it when people say bad stuff about it, when part of it is the hardware maker's fault as well.
Pretty similar story with the real desktop Windows too.
How about the video drivers... are they enabled for this.
Could this be unlocked for T-Mob U.S. networks?
if it has a touchscreen...then why does it have a directional pad?
OK - the GPS is a start
Now all the other major drawbacks of HTC phones that still need to be addressed
SLOW processor
QVGA resolution - what year is it?
Crappy battery life
Can those items be addressed without increasing the size? - hell yes - look at their competition - imate, eten, iphone...
I forgot - HTC still doesn't seem to be able to get BT to work as well on their $500 phones as it does on the free phones you can get with most carriers. I would blame all of it on MS but if you replace the stack that comes with the phone with Widcomm or other stacks it significantly improves sound quality. If they want to say it is MS's fault - fine - can't they work with MS - I'm pretty sure HTC is one of the largest WM phone companies - I think it might help both MS and HTC's reputation to fix this.
Are video drivers also shot on this one or is there something else HTC is going to screw us on *after* we pay for it? Broken GPS drivers anyone?
I seriously think this thing is gorgeous.
