The Nokia N78, in European and North American flavors
The revamped Nseries lineup is coming fast and furious since the launch of the N81 and N82 late last year, and the latest candybar to get the updated industrial design is the N78, a midrange handset (by Nseries standards, anyway) with an integrated FM transmitter setting it apart from the crowd. Another notable feature is its picture geotagging capability, made possible by the 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera paired with integrated AGPS. Other than that, it's pretty much your average S60 Third Edition Feature Pack 2 piece with Bluetooth and WiFi, though it's the very first Nseries model to be announced in both European and North American 3G versions simultaneously -- and if that's not progress, we don't know what is. Look for it to start stocking shelves next quarter for €350 (about $507).

is this AGPS still real GPS but with just the assistance of cellular towers triangulating your point, or, is it JUST cellular triangulation like the iPhone?
i assume it's real GPS but would like to know for sure!
amby @ Feb 11th 2008 6:25AM
it's the real thing with the extra :-) (GPS plus the cell towers)
NightBlade @ Feb 11th 2008 4:26AM
Where are the keys?? (I know, I know, but still)
Johan S @ Feb 11th 2008 4:31AM
It better come with dancing girls if people are expected to dish out $800 for a phone with merely a QVGA display.
MARSHAK @ Feb 11th 2008 8:54AM
better! it comes with a copy of doom and a blendtec blender
Superprime @ Feb 11th 2008 8:01AM
Uhm... 500$ completely contract free unlocked
Poom @ Feb 11th 2008 4:46AM
Ewww... I hate those keys so badly... weird arrangements, the same plane as the phone itself, and small keys leaving so much space... Just ewww...
Poom @ Feb 11th 2008 4:49AM
Hmm... The mroe I look at this, the more I hate it. Shouldn't you add Xenon-flash into this phone, Nokia???? Also, no lens protector??? Although, simultaneous releases for Europe and NA would make a lot of people happy, as well as the internal FM transmitter.

That has possibly got the worst keypad I've ever seen!
Mobius_1 @ Feb 11th 2008 7:18AM
Carrier Support??? Nokia is not doing so well for a reason...
mako @ Feb 11th 2008 7:29AM
Nokia not doing well? erhm..?
Pdexter @ Feb 11th 2008 8:29AM
Aye world leading mobile phone manufacturer that dominates smartphones with 72% and all phones sold 40% doing crap....=)
Anyways i'm not happy with these announcments N96 is nice, but dont think i'm selling my N82 for it. Was really waiting for E71, but seems it wont be released yet this seemed to be just about N series. Would think they got some more phones to release.
Mobius_1 @ Feb 12th 2008 4:40AM
Like in America? Nokia is dominating elsewhere (which I am aware of) but not that well in the US and A
DrXym @ Feb 11th 2008 7:32AM
Those are horrible looking buttons. They look fiddly and error prone too.
Daniel @ Feb 11th 2008 7:45AM
will it be possible to turn agps into gps off for no credit days?

Can Nokia release a phone that has a normal keypad?? A phone targeted at being a multimedia device should at least have a nice keypad to send text/mms/e-mails. I stopped buying Nokia because I can't stand their new keypads. This is the users interaction with the phone and the best Nokia can do is a miniature keypad. I am awaiting the next QWERTY offering from Nokia. Please o please release one, Windows Mobile is killing me!!! The N78 and N96 have great specs but those dinky keypads, come on!!! Sorry Nokia, no fanboism here.
FRiC @ Feb 11th 2008 8:58AM
Actually, the keys look like they're a huge improvement over the N82 keys. The cursor pad looks the same as the current E series, instead of the wacky pad.
CanCar @ Feb 11th 2008 12:31PM
There's been a few rumours going around recently, on forums and other blogs, about the next NSeries handsets to be released.
I would like to see the N78 include HSDPA, too. I hope it happens.

This is the N73 successor with aGPS, WiFi, and FP2 but the same camera. This is a mid-range phone so I don't think Nokia is going to pack all the features into it.

Everyone moaned & complained about the K850 keypad. I thought it worked great & used it everyday for 4 months.
This one doesn't look much worse, better.
However- what phone does this replace?
I'd say if Nokia should work on one thing it's the screen size. The N95 8gb is just about right, but many of their phones have really small screens & lots of dead space. Can someone explain to me what the button is near the D-pad?
bachviet @ Feb 11th 2008 11:59AM
It replaces the N73 (same camera but better features including FP2, aGPS, WiFi, integrated FM, and etc).
