Toshiba announces Portege G810 smartphone
Toshiba already got official with its G710 and G910 handsets last month, but it's just now filled in that rather glaring numerical gap, with it taking the wraps off its new Portege G810 smartphone at MWC (not to be confused with Samsung's also-just-announced G810). Like those other two, this one's a Windows Mobile 6 device, and it boasts support for HSDPA and HSUPA, along with built-in GPS and A-GPS, and the always-welcome integrated WiFi and Bluetooth. Otherwise, you can expect a 2.8-inch QVGA touch screen, a 3 megapixel camera, a microSD card slot for expansion and even an FM radio in case all the usual PMP features aren't enough for you. No word on a price, but you can look for this one to hit Europe sometime in the second quarter of this year.

wow its as ugly as the gigabeat... well done toshiba. well done.
Reader @ Feb 11th 2008 3:23PM
Oiy I like my Gigabeat, but am soon to replace it with a Zune 8gigger.
How do these companies manage to name their products the same when they're using a 4 digit alphanumeric name??? That just seems completely asinine to me.

Why don't you guys ever tell the screen resolution for phones? It's one of the most important specs. I'm going to assume it's the standard 320x240 on Windows Mobile.

QVGA...
VampireHunter Z @ Feb 11th 2008 1:35PM
Okay, so now I need a separate browser window with wikipedia open in order to know what the various *VGA means. Forgive my tech insolence.
crow610 @ Feb 11th 2008 1:17PM
actually I think it looks pretty good!

What a horrible name-- same thought I have with every Toshiba portable. Just looks like a dyslexic spelling of "protégé". Wouldn't be surprised if Word autocorrected it. (It doesn't, but you get my meaning.)
Also, yeah-- bad, klunky proportions.

I wish someone would get Toshiba some new product line names.
The Portege is also one of their laptop lines.
Andrew @ Feb 11th 2008 3:20PM
Even worse, Portege is not just any laptop line, it's the "executive" laptop line (i.e. top of the line). This kind of reuse dilutes the brand. Disappointing.

Tell me again- why can't Apple add these features on the iPhone?
mike @ Feb 11th 2008 1:55PM
Because then it would be a good product...
riggs @ Feb 11th 2008 2:34PM

Steve Jobs- "Maybe if add more storage they won't notice the lack of compelling features"
iFlunky- "Excellent sir! How can we best screw-over the iFaithful?"
El Jobso- "How about releasing it well outside the return period for those who buy @ Mac World?"
iFlunky- "Genius! Might I also suggest charging for software features already promised at launch?"
The Steve- "Nobody would sit for that..."
The Jobster- "And secure the @#$% OS this time- I look like an A$$ for not including 3rd party apps 'for security reasons'. It's got more holes than a mid-east undersea cable. And design something else with no quick-swap batteries!"

This is a nice looking phone - feel free to wake me up if they come out with a VGA resolution version of this phone - not sure why anyone is still making QVGA phones and expecting to charge money for them. QVGA for free pdaphones with a 2 year subscription makes sense but QVGA for a phone you pay for?
Ricardo @ Feb 12th 2008 5:03AM
Don't know why, but I think the Xperia X1 is slightly better.

Why this product isn't available in any US store?
I need it in amazon to replace my toshiba e330, 5 years old and still working hard.
