Wii Pong: the Twilight Princess hack evolves
Those hackers work fast. Two days ago, we saw a demo of the Zelda: Twilight Princess exploit, which allowed for the possibility of Nintendo's Wii to boot homebrew code off of SD cards via stack smashing (buffer overflow). Now a clever coder named Auby has gone ahead and extended the hack to load an ELF version of Pong which was originally coded for the GameCube. Right now the controls aren't functioning, but it appears that this is a work in progress, so we should be seeing updates to it soon. Check the video after the break to watch the breathtaking drama unfold.

The important part is being in the Wii you /purchased/, /not/ playing _their_ games.
..if you get me.
It will soon be assimilated. I don't know if my next desktop will be a Wii, a PS3, a rig built from parts or what.
..the 360? Still worthless.. and still a microsoft product.

This is progress for peeps who believe in pushing hardware to its limits and hacking where things are locked down. It's great news for everyone. However, I'll get excited in the near future when an easy hack has been distributed and stable and functional unauthorized 3rd-party games are available.
StrangeBum @ Feb 13th 2008 4:00PM
This hack is supposed to be a quick and easy one. Despite having to own Twilight Princess and an SD card. Both of which any respectable Wii owner likely does. And it shouldn't be too long before we see this stabilize greatly and become a great hack for Wii owners.
The possibilities of third-party indie games is a great one for this system. I'm holding out a great deal of hope for this. Now that the soft-hack is possible, I don't want to resort to a hard-hack more than ever.

STFU
hackman @ Feb 14th 2008 1:07AM
hey, that would be cool tho
Mike @ Feb 13th 2008 6:54PM
Yes, but isn't the US Twilight Princess immune to this? Only the Japan versions?
Alexander @ Feb 13th 2008 8:15PM
Incorrect. There are versions that work for this. It just requires the right ones.
Not only that, but this is just a temporary solution. Just like the old way of booting a custom firmware on your PSP through Lumines or GTA:LCS the 'requirement' of Zelda Twilight Princess to boot homebrew will soon be eliminated.
CubeGuy @ Feb 14th 2008 12:29AM
Also, the video is in... y'know... english...
ZeroCorpse @ Feb 13th 2008 8:57PM
YAY! Now we can play a nonfunctional 40-year-old game on the Wii.
Interestingly enough, nonfunctional pong is probably better than half of the Wii games out right now.
comp2 @ Feb 13th 2008 9:35PM
You fail.
Alexandre Ludolf @ Feb 14th 2008 6:39AM
where's the "hello World"?
but incredible news
John Johnson @ Feb 14th 2008 8:22AM
I wonder if the Pong will ever be played????????????????bushing????rsec??
(If you don't remember the original Zelda hack, you won't get it)
MikeG @ Feb 14th 2008 9:42AM
Isn't it a custom for something along the lines of "Hello World!" ?
Or did that fad die ages ago...
Rumpelstiltskin @ Feb 15th 2008 7:29PM
They've already done it. IIRC, it was the first thing they managed to do. Pong is now the next step.
