Coby MP-835 touchscreen PMP almost puts those horrible boomboxes out of mind
In what can only be seen as further evidence of Coby employing to totally different design teams for its PMPs and its fiery boombox product lines, the MP-835 doesn't look half bad. The 10mm thick touchscreen player has a 3-inch, 480 x 272 LCD, and while the 2GB or 4GB storage options are pretty weak, you can augment that with microSD. MP3, WMA, OGG, AVI and WMV are supported, but we'd like to see some AAC and some better video codecs -- but hey, it's Coby, let's not get ahead of ourselves. No word on price, but the player does apparently have FCC certification, so we might be seeing it in the States before long.

anoldcarsnickname @ Feb 15th 2008 1:49PM
You just did by naming those 2.
SimonRichards @ Feb 14th 2008 6:26PM
Looks much more like the YP-P2

I don't know, I think it looks like a Coby MP-835.
Rafer @ Feb 14th 2008 5:45PM
That is quite sexy and it doesnt look like and ipod one bit. Does it mean its on the cheap because its from Coby? Please say yes.

I have a friend that actually has a coby boombox. Ironically, it came with a weird flame/zebra print on it.

So, when can I hope to see this in my local Rite Aid?

According to a PDF on Coby's site, there's going to be FM radio, as well as photo and text viewing capabilities as well. You can use WMP11 to sync to it as well. That's in their very short generic User's Guide that's on the site as well

Is it just me or does that thing look just like my Samsung YP-P2?
Ethyriel @ Feb 14th 2008 7:34PM
MicroSD expandability is essentially worthless to me, and I'd think most people who are looking for alternatives to major brands. 8GB is really rather low end these days, and to have use a card for that is kind of stupid. Give me 8GB internal, and full size SDHC support. That would make 16GB affordable, and 24-40GB possible.
DarkLightConnection @ Feb 14th 2008 9:27PM
OGG support? FINALLY!! What I've been waiting for to get rid of my old Lyra (really old one, no color screen here, not even backlit)...
IF it is dirt-cheap like the other coby products, I'm sold...
4GB IS enough when you have OGG support..
And BTW engadget, OGG sounds better than AAC
Ethyriel @ Feb 14th 2008 9:51PM
Hardly. My collection in OGG lvl 5 takes 23GB, in FLAC lvl 8 it consumes 110GB. It's 300 albums at the moment (exactly, how crazy), with probably about 20 doubles and a triple. Considering I buy all my music, my collection is relatively small. I'm sorry, but 4GB isn't nearly enough for me. I'm somewhat happy with 16GB, but I really look forward to 32GB Cowon players.
avirji @ Feb 15th 2008 12:03AM
looks pretty good for coby... considering my last product from them was a radio built-in to headphones that were ultra bulky/ugly
