Samsung's new TouchWiz UI gets previewed on video
If you've seen our shots of Samsung's Armani redo, the F480, you might have noticed it's running a new OS. The UI -- called TouchWiz -- is based off of the company's Croix interface (which apparently was rushed out to compete with the iPhone), and will be used on all of the upcoming finger-touch phones from the manufacturer. The cats over at Phone Scoop had a chance to go one-on-one with TouchWiz at Mobile World Congress, and they've put together a pretty informative video that shows off the UI doing its thing. The inclusion of a new widget system, expanded menu options, and overall speed bump make this OS a notable step up from Samsung's previous offering. Take a look at the video after the break to see the system getting all funky-fresh.

You do know Apple uses Samsung's processor and flash memory in their phones, so regardless of which you get, Samsung makes money.
Yawn!!! Another poor attempt at the iPhone. Just like the iPod the iPhone is not going to be easily taken down. We are going to need "innovation" not "imitation". iPhone was innovative in its design and UI, this is just "look we can do just like the iPhone" Please!?! I like Samsung as a company and all, but I would expect more then a Sony job from them.
That's a total rip off... I have a gadget that makes phone calls too!
Wow, seriously very disappointed with their UI.
Comments on your comments..
Kevin: did you see multi-touch anywhere in this video? If it doesnt come with any sort of multi-touch, how could samsung be trying to copy Apple's multi-touch?
fanboys: check out the first ever smart phone. it's from ibm and I hate (ok love) to say it, apple didnt come up with any of the elements that make a smart phone functional. (Ok, i'll concede visual voice mail. But really that credit goes to ATT). Yes they added snazzy features like an accelerometer that I only find useful when using safari and multi-touch which is only usefull when i'm viewing pictures and want to zoom in on my uncles nose hair.
Dont get me wrong, I love apple. I just hate it when people (read: fanboys) confuse elegant design with feats of engineering.
er... what?
I don't think anyone ever claimed Apple invented the smartphone. ...except maybe Artie MacStrawman.
AT&T deserves no credit for Visual Voicemail other than being smart enough to listen to Apple.
The devil is in the details. Multitouch, accelerometers, automatic orientation, smart correcting qwerty, flawless integration with the #1 online music and video retailer, top-notch calendar / contact / etc. synching with a computer, 160ppi screen, fast processor...
these things aren't just extra niceties, they're fundamentally responsible for why the iPhone is the best user experience on the market.
no QWERTY? damn...
Whoa, thats neat. I like the touch screen. I am glad touch screen is becoming the new thing. That phone is nice, love the widgets & things. To bad it did not show the browser.
No kidding.
Without showing the browser, or a qwerty on screen, we're missing 2 of most important components to a good user experience.
My toyota has 4 wheels, an engine, transmission, a steering column and a whole bunch of other crap. Mr. Benz must be turning in his grave.
I gotta say that I don't really like that text entry system, but I am in love with my QWERTY.
f**k!
very much resembles iphone/ipod touch!
i own an ipod touch and it animated pretty much like those in the video!
Looks like a decent phone, all things being equal.
As has been mentioned. It's clearly not designed with much PDA function in mind(winmo, BB, iphone etc). It's a PHONE that has a touch screen with neat colours and movable widgets. It's for the segment that don't want a pda, but want something that's up to date and cool looking. Their market isn't going to be hacking it, or modding it, or loading 20 different custom apps (if there's even a touch screen dev platform for these things)
I have an iPhone (came from a SE-W900). I've used winmo phones before. they're difficult to use with a finger and I don't need all the heavy business-ties. I wanted something with a touch screen, that played music, let me surf, keep track of appointments, mail and let me add apps to play with if I wanted. iphone was the best choice, and I love it.
Apple didn't invent the touchscreen or the interface. It made it "public" and accessible. It forced the stagnant design trends in the cell phone market to change. Change is good. Apple did that.
I'd buy this phone for the gf, but not for me.
lol girlfriend
shocking isn't it.
Disposable income AND a life! wow!
I'd buy it mostly because I'm sick of the 6 year old, busted clamshell she's carrying around now. That's gotta go.
I want that Ui on my P2 !!!!
lol... how is this copying the iphone?
i never saw an iphone with widgets that are movable on the home screen... last i checked the iphone home screen are just shortcuts to programs
Why would you want ridiculously oversized widgets that do nothing but clutter the home screen. And i guess if you want to call a clock a widget that you would care about then NO you cant move that around on the iphone, but again why would you want to. Its right there at the top where you can see it whenever you like, just like any other phone in the world.
And why would you want to have to bring up a widget just to set your wallpaper? As far as reconfiguring your home screen icons, well i guess you can drag them all over the place and cover up other icons with them, but if your even a little OCD that phone would make you want to kill.
I am and have always been a huge anti apple advocate as far as their computers go, but when i layed my hands on the iphone i knew they had done something right for me. Though i cant touch this i highly doubt it would have sold me in the store like the iphone did, not with this lackluster presentation and cluttered interface.
Lick Here {} You could be one of the lucky 10!
Apple didn't invent the touchscreen phone, they introduced it in the phone world. I know there were more touchscreen phones before the iPhone, but those were fat and ugly and way to user unfriendly. losangelescardonations. com

"T9's a good way to write a message" ????!!!! - Says who? - Sure, compared to multiple tapping it is, but get real - it needs a qwerty keypad.
looks much more sexy than the iphone.
The scrolling through menus looks like it could be a pain. Also, I think there needs to be more touchscreen phones with slide out qwerty keyboards.
there are a few major flaws with this.
- there is no qwerty keyboard. and no, vibrating tacticle feedback is not making up for anything.
- scrolling through lists is not practical
- the main home page is too cluttered and useless. there is no point in moving widgets that are twice as large as they should be and just get in the way.
Samsung provides NAND chip (the body) for iPhone and SSD HDD for the MacBook Air, and the Intel provides the main NAND CPU processor (the brain) just like they do it for PS3 and of course, the whole-touch screen has been around for years before you heard about iPhone, but in fact there was a similar product from LG about a year prior to iPhone's release in 2007. iPhone not only copied it from LG but they actually ripped it off and then, transulented the whole idea of selling their famous iPod suddnely blending into a brand new cellphone, aka, iPhone. Now all of a sudden, this noob company who knows nothing about running business with the network system is suddenly in charge of the market business for selling the cellphone. We are not just talking about the old Edge network which doesn't even exist in Korea becase they are actually ahead of us by 2 generations that they are not even using 3G with wi-fi, but 4G with Wi-max. The point is that Apple seems like they are making the great hardware products but they are actually good at creating a great software that runs the whole system in an unique way of their own. If there wasn't iPod, iPhone is just another copy-cat products among millions of cellphone that are already out there in a market, but the way they bring the iPod into a cellphone in a releative concept is the greatest thing and for that, not just the touch-screen, but the multi-touch really plays a big role which they didn't invent. They make the cheap earphone which I know for sure although it is hard to call that as an innovative techonlogy.
Having actually owned, used (and been very fond of) a Samsung phone for a while, I can see how this UI is an evolution of Samsung's previous UIs rather than an outright iPhone ripoff.
Bit disappointing that there doesn't seem to be a proper keyboard interface for text entry though ... wtf?
What makes you think it doesn't have an on screen QWERTY keyboard? He chose T9 from a list of options. ABC...abc...T9ABC...etc. OR were you all just missing the real QWERTY slide out button keyboard?
Hmmm. This piques my interest. I was hoping that Nokia was the one developing though. Their touchscreen UI is still bad though. I don't get the multitouch. The only time i use it on my iphone is for resizing. you can do that with a normal touch too you know.
Sorry I'll wait for an iphone-the scrolling was horrible. Its a pale imitation of the perfection which is iphone.
I don't know why people associate "Touch screen" with "Iphone" as if they invented it. The only thing iPhone brought was the finger scroll method and the multitouch resize. They made it more "next gen" but the technology isn't something they originated.. just the implementation of a couple of cool features.
I too want an iPhone but I wouldn't leave Sprint for AT&T... so I await the M800 on Sprint. Granted this IS a product that is designed to compete with the iPhone.. and the fact that the Sprint version will include EV-DO already owns the iphone... So while it may be targeted as an iPhone competitor.. competition never hurt.. and has always helped the consumer. I mean Windows 95 "Desktop" is a rip off of Mac back in the day.. and Linux distros look just like Windows with their little version of the "start" bar. But nobody says they are rip off of eachother.. or minds that they are trying to impress the consumers. So enough with the "oh hum boring iphone rip off" as the more the merrier! I personally can't wait for the Meizu M8 to take all of iPhones bad features and make them better. What do I care if there is an Apple or an "M" on the back of it? Unless you are on the Apple payroll.. i think you can loosen up your loyalties.
you qwerty fans, think about how small the qwerty keys would be on that screen, its either ridiculously tiny buttons or the whole screen is the keyboard (with still small buttons) and can't see what your typing
a little common sense goes a long way folks, qwerty doesn't work on screen only phones like this, buttons would be tinier than on even the slide out ones
The whole point of having a large touch screen it you can have a full qwerty keyboard, not everyone has fat fingers, I type 3 time faster on the iphone than with t9 text. Anyway the phone manufactures should let the user choose it they prefer a keyboard or t9 & add a qwerty keypad how dare they not add one, we SHOULD have the choice.
