Onkyo unveils another audiophile PC, the APX-2 HD
Onyko's cranked out a couple slick little audio-oriented desktops and media PCs, and its latest carries the tradition on in fine form -- the new APX-2 HD audiophile PC actually looks more like a high-end shelf system than a PC, if you ask us. The compact unit houses a 1.66GHz T5500 Core 2 Duo, 1GB of RAM, a vibration-isolated 500GB disk and the same digital amplifier found in the PCI-200 sound card, which bypasses Vista's sound mixer and channels audio directly through to avoid HD Audio signal loss. Sadly, this one looks to be Japan-only, but if you're headed out that way, you'll want an extra couple grand in your pocket to snag one of these bad boys.

Why the heck are the keyboard and mouse wired?
A wired keyboard is better than a wireless one (wireless keyboards are easy to spy on, interference on a keyboard can do nasty things on your computer, and more importantly: you DON'T need it. That's why there's a remote control..... Also, the last thing we need is to unnecessarily use more frequencies on the RF spectrum... it ain't unlimited, you know)
Agree on the mouse though, should be wireless...
Because a wireless transmitter/receiver inside the unit could cause interference with the amplifier. It happens.
It must be pretty audio-oriented to not have a monitor.
i was thinking the same thing, but there must be a monitor if there's a keyboard and mouse? am i missing something?
i'd love one of these, hopefully it'll become available in the uk.
OSD
Your HD (Plasma, DLP, LCD, LcOS, SED, OLED, CRT) Screen acts as the monitor.
Why they choosed to use Intel as Core 2 Duos have HUGE problems when it comes to audio. Somehow their halt commands and throttling make the computer whine a lot. Disabling those makes it quiet but consumes loads of extra juice. Going with AMD would have been in this case better option (even thou I'm intel guy my self)
Well, an good USB-DAC can be had for not too much money, and will turn most PCs into reasonable soundcentres.
Is it just me or does a 1.6GB processor sound light for 2008? Especially for a device designed to apparently handle mucho media.
And yes, I did mean GHz.
It is considering it runs on Vista. You'd think they would have gone with some sort of instant-on embedded OS. Do you have to wait for it to boot up before you can listen to your music?
Sleep/Wake. You don't have to boot.
I guess that makes sense. Although it doesn't really need to run Vista as it bypasses all of the audio stuff anyway. It would be good if the OS was on a small SSD with the data being kept on the HDD.
No. I have a 1.6GHz processor
And it still kicks Nuendo 3, Sony Vegas 8, Sound Forge 9, Kontakt 4, 3ds Max, AutoCAD 2008 and some classic but no-so-simple games...
That is, audio production.... if I can do audio production on it, you think it can't be used daily to listen to music and check e-mail?
This is dual-core of course, a single core would never do the job....
sleek! but the remote doesnt quite match
That thing is sexshi!
I'll give them kudos for the sexy design but for the money you could build a much more capable mythtv system. The comment about the USB dac is true to. No need to drop the money on the sound card. The Vista comment probably means it runs media center, so that's a no go for me. That also mean your TV is probably the monitor.

Is this unit fanless w/ a massive heat sink or just a overpriced Media Center PC?
Screw what is inside I just want the damn case. That makes a shuttle PC look like an IBM circa 1982.
