Given the BlackJack's popularity on AT&T, it only makes sense that Sprint (among
other carriers) would be looking to get in on that action. Indeed,
as expected, Sprint has now launched Samsung's ACE (get it? like the really good card to have when you're playing blackjack?) that comes out swinging with Windows Mobile 6 Standard, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, stereo Bluetooth, EV-DO, and a SIM slot for hooking your globetrotting butt up with GSM service when you find yourself overseas; what it
doesn't have is HSDPA, so don't look at this puppy as an apples-for-apples
BlackJack II replacement. It's available now for $199.99 after the usual laundry list of rebates and contract discounts.
Separately, Sprint has also gone live with the M520, an unassuming slider
we've known about for a while now with GPS, a 1.3 megapixel cam, and tethering capability. This one comes in at a reasonable $49.99 after rebate on contract.

New phone for me!!!
matt @ Feb 17th 2008 2:48PM
why would you pay $200 for a smartphone without 3g
Matt @ Feb 17th 2008 3:29PM
It has two radios, one for Sprints own CDMA service, and one for an optional GSM provider if you insert a SIM card. Basically if you travel overseas and you want to continue using your phone, you toss in say an Orange SIM card, and continue using your Sprint phone while you're in France.
It has 3G, just not on the GSM half of the phone, only EV-DO.

Am I the only person here who thinks the fact that the Sprint logo takes up so much real estate makes that phone look hideous? I mean, the screen on that may be humongous, but proportionately, it looks tiny. Combine that with the huge amount of space taken up by the keyboard, and it looks nigh unusable. I dunno. Not for me.
M @ Feb 17th 2008 3:18PM
WTF is that ugly thing on the left?! and why would you pay anything for that!?
gage @ Feb 17th 2008 3:49PM
Only about 10 years behind the iphone, hahaha nice try. Sprint is totally fucked!!
Thats what happens when you have a bunch of fat porker soccer moms on the BOD looking at new phones. "Wow i really like the look of that one, its fat and bloated like me, lets go hit McDonald's!"
Michael @ Feb 17th 2008 4:05PM
Personally, I've always liked Samsung phones. Their only flaw is poor screen visibility in harsh sunlight. Other than that, they've always served me well.
@ gage: No need to be so vitriolic. What possible connection could there be between the expansing waistline of the average American and their choice of phones? If I were to draw ANY sort of correlation, it'd be soccer-moms and their RAZRs, and even that would be a stretch of logic.
Try to use your brain before you espouse idiotic ideas. I personally wouldn't get the ACE because the screen is smallish, but the M520 looks like an attractive slider. I think it's a serious contender for my next phone come contract renewal in December, unless a more viable alternative has emerged.
Calm down dude, it's the internet, not a hate forum.

Round of applause for gage's amazing insight.

Sorry Samsung, but this is ugly... please, phone companies, change your design teams right now.
People, please don't hate me, but seriously when are these companies going to realize that it is time start evolving? I mean god dammit, I freakin hate the iPhone for how limited the phone is, but after seeing so many ugliness in the past week from mobile companies I can't but admit that the iPhone is and will freakin win, I hate saying this, but, sh*t, seriously! I swear to god that this whole "ugly" mobiles thing is driving me crazy! nice and well done designs of mobile phones are filling the Internet in hundreds of forums and personal website, god freakin dammit! Samsung and all the companies out there, I will f**king rape my self just for you to get new and fresh designs of your mobile phone productions out for the people, heck I will pay double the iPhone cost for you to get a clean design out.
For the love of god! Where are these companies living at?

I would rather a phone be functional than pretty, since it's main purpose is to make calls and text. If they can do that AND get some good design in there I'm all for it, but form follows function for me. E.g. the Nokia 7280 fashion phone looked great, but was a total PITA to use.
That's not to say I want a fugly brick to talk on, it's just that with the desire for smaller devices and requirements of the technology that there's not a lot of latitude in design; display above buttons (otherwise you cover the display) in a way that works with a user's hand(s). It also has to make sense (i.e if you put a non-Dvorak keyboard or place the numbers out of sequence I imagine most people will find it irritating to use).
Also, this phone is slightly narrower than the BlackJack by 0.4". After using a phone with a full keyboard I'm hesitant to go back to a keypad (mainly due to my inability to use tap method) but I don't want it to look like I'm using a GameBoy all day. It does make me pity people with fat fingers or poor dexterity, but not a whole lot.

check out the Samsung SPH-M800, i think it looks pretty cool. I know that it does look like an Iphone but it should be even better because it isn't Apple.
joshman @ Feb 17th 2008 5:26PM
So this Samsung Ace is basically the same as the Blackjack I? It seems Sprint and Verizon are always are year behind and a dollar short.
Kyledl @ Feb 17th 2008 6:35PM
this samsung is about 2 years old now, old phone that sprint decides to pickup. this post was not about a new release from samsung. you mongloids never cease to amaze
@sushi @ Feb 17th 2008 8:23PM
uhh.. I think you meant "mongoloids." If you did, you used the word totally incorrectly.
Kyledl @ Feb 18th 2008 12:40AM
uhhh i think you meant to keep your mouth shut.

Honestly Samsung, stop being a ho and give me my M800 with an onscreen horizontal QWERTY keyboard, auto-focus 2MP camera, nice interface and more than enough RAM for the memory hog WinMo.
Kyledl @ Feb 18th 2008 1:15AM
on-screen keyboard? YUCK! When are we going to see a dual slider with phone keypad and qwerty keyboard? Now thats a phone.
