Samsung expected to focus efforts on Blu-ray
Not like it's any surprise or anything, but the company known for its fairly continuous stream of Blu-ray / HD DVD combo players is reportedly expected to hone in on Blu in the very near future. If you'll recall, we heard Onkyo make a similar statement earlier this month, and according to an unspecified Samsung official, it's looking to "show more interest in Blu-ray products than rival HD DVD." Unfortunately, that's all the firm would utter on the record, but really, it pretty much says it all. 'Course, it remains to be seen what will happen to the forthcoming BD-UP5500, but don't be shocked to hear that Sammy's next high-definition movie player only understands one of the two formats.

wow that box reminds me of Sony hifi VCRs from the 90s

I wish they would focus more of their effors on their mobile phones and UMPC's.
Samsung phones are good for the most part, but they have bad battery life, and I would love to see a better P2 touch interface on their phones. And making better WinMo phones with the specs to match could help.
And their UMPC's are still way too bulky to really be "ultra-mobile". Make them slim and nice with touch and you might have something.
BluRay is something that should be secondary.

Samsung is the largest consumer electronics company on the planet.
You really think their blu-ray players are taking anything away from their cellphones? Or are you some kind of knucklehead who had to throw in a complaint that is totally irrelevant?
Trust me, the fact that Samsung is dropping HD DVD is not going to f up your cell phone.

Nail in the coffin?

I disagree. Sometimes it can be used for comic effect.
But not always.

Everything I buy from Samsung has the crappiest menu system ever devised. My home theatre in a box system is totally whacked out, and has to be reset before any dvd will go to the menu. My bedroom tv has a green power light, that is ON when the tv is off, and OFF when the tv is on. I going totally Panasonic from now on.
J. Evans Turner @ Feb 18th 2008 7:58PM
The power light issue is typical with Samsung. When the TV is off, the light is on so that you know it's at least getting power. It's off when the TV is on so that it doesn't pollute the movie-watching experience. Still, it's supposed to be red when the TV is off. Are you partially colorblind like myself?
hal9K @ Feb 19th 2008 5:16PM
Nope, it's always green.
David @ Feb 18th 2008 3:58PM
Screw you Samsung, you standards ho.
Make mine HD-DVD.
Geir E @ Feb 18th 2008 4:13PM
If you really want to be a rebel, ask for a hd-dvd/betamax combo player. That will show 'em!
phanbouy @ Feb 18th 2008 4:48PM
check out my foot in your ass
phanbouy @ Feb 18th 2008 6:13PM

Mike @ Feb 18th 2008 5:52PM
Someone actually wrote a story on this piece of "news" and I actually read and commented on how dumb it was?
Daniel @ Feb 18th 2008 6:48PM
i hope they still make the new combo player. ill probably just get an ax2 off of ebay and be happy but would like a backup of backup just in case.
J. Evans Turner @ Feb 18th 2008 8:00PM
I'll try to remember that myself! Much appreciated.
David S @ Feb 18th 2008 10:27PM
Considering how well their other combo player was, I think Samsung is doing HD DVD fans a favor by dropping HD DVD support. Better off getting either a cheap A30 (or A3) and a HDMI switch.
AJ in the East Bay @ Feb 18th 2008 11:24PM
Well they better get off their a$$ and make good BD players unless they want to keep getting sued, plus now everyone will me making BD players, including Toshiba.
Watch your back, Sammy, here comes Toshi on your six!!
guerilla779 @ Feb 19th 2008 4:32AM
screw samsung and LG, they were the first to shit in their pants and take out BD/HDDVD combo players.
