iPod shuffle price cut, now $49
Well, what do you know. What was $79 just a few minutes ago is now just $49. Making room for something new are we Apple? Still no change to iPod touch and iPhone pricing but we'll keep an eye out.Update: Apple store offline. Picture of all the discounted shuffles after the break.
Update 2: Store back online with new 2GB shuffle for just $69 -- available later this month.
[Thanks, Mog]

The truth is posted here.
$49 for that piece of crap?!?!?!?!? Any generic $10 mp3 player on eBay better than the shuffle.
Honestly, I don't really know what the hell these people that mention Creative are talking about. I'm not a die-hard Apple fanboy but I can enjoy a good product when I see it. I'd rather pay a little extra for something nicer/sleeker, higher in quality and for a better experience.
I think I'm clearly a twat as I have HD DVD player and a £49 iPod shuffle. Find me a bridge to jump off now!
Well, that's nice mid-way upgrade. At least they're not completely remaking the shuffle. -- Karim Baz
Reading the comments here clearly shows that some folks don't understand that a portable music player from Apple is more than just the thing that goes in your pocket. It is the ecosystem around it. With the Shuffle, you have a tailor made ecosystem revolving around it: software tailor made for it, a music store, computers, operating systems, complementary devices (Apple TV, Airport Express with Airtunes), etc.
Microsoft doesn't go about updating Windows Media Player to specifically support Creative's hardware. It is up to Creative to support Microsoft's APIs, software, DRM, etc. This is really a long story, but until you realize this (maybe you should actually experience it before dissing it) then you know that the Shuffle and other iPods are just pieces of a much larger puzzle that all works well together...
Anyway, there's no point explaining further, the anti-Apple folks who think this is all about being "cool" won't care anyway, and they are the ones whining...
Heh. I just got my dad a shuffle for christmas.
Maybe I should beg Jobs for $30 -.-
Wow
they must be desperate...
oh wait, i guess i can only say this when it is the Zune dropping its price huh?
Can't believe so many people on the talkback don't get it: the point of the Shuffle is to be simple. I used to exercise with an RCA with these little bitty rubbery buttons. You couldn't tell what was what by feel. The display screen was unreadable in sunlight, and longer names caused you to have to either stop to read or risk blasting into a tree head first. The iPod is perfect for running: it's light, it doesn't need third party straps to get it out of your hands, and the UI is intuitive by touch. If I rode a subway to work or travelled a lot, the Zens of the world would make more sense.
Stop trying to shoehorn the shuffle into a category it was never designed for.

there were changes to the touch, they added the missing applications from the i phone and increased the capacity to 32 GB
Why would you spend $49 on a 1GB mp3 player without a screen when there are plenty of better alternatives out there at lower prices? A Sansa the same price has a screen and better features.
The Sansa Clip is the real reason that Apple's lowering the price and introducing a new model. The Clip has a screen and is one of the best sounding mp3 players on the market period (not just for its class.) The 1GB version is $40 and the 2GB version is $60. Sansa's about to release a 4GB version for $80 and that's what prompted Apple to lower the price. No one, not even Apple, can compete with a unit that has four times the memory for the same price.

On Cnet Clip = 7.5/10 while Shuffle = 6.3/10.
And here's Grahm from anythingbutipod.com decrying all the enthusiasm for the new, lower-priced Shuffle.
