Microsoft gets RRoD at GDC
Just days ago, we heard that Microsoft's Xbox 360 failure rate was at a staggering 16-percent. Not helping Redmond's cause in making you believe otherwise, one of the hand-picked machines used at the 2008 Game Developers Conference was actually suffering from the infamous Red Ring of Death. Comedic gold? Yes, indeed. Check the video after the jump!

It's funny, but what does an Xbox 360 say about the type of user, and about America as well that we accept such failures. It really is ironic that at a convention showing off the newest from Microsoft a console get RR'OD, but hey, it plays Halo right?
shame, they cant deny it when the whole conference sees it
Embarrassing!
infamous?
"Infamous" is that like "more than famous." lol ... Oh man, you just reminded me of "The Three Amigos."
Poetic justice. lol ....
Hahahah funny. 360 still rocks. Has lots of games. Too bad it RRoD and I can't play them.
The guys making the video have done this to make it look bad and funny... someone pulled the cable out of the back, and so it's giving the "cable is not connected properly" warning lights, not the "system is dead" warning lights.
Go ahead and try it yourself if you don't believe me. That's not the "real' RROD. That's a cable error.
I could make the PS3 give panic alerts too, if I yanked out the cables while it was on display.
Hmm, maybe it's just me but if I unplug any of the PS3 cables on my 20GB PS3 I get no errors. I plug them back in and viola(!) it still works! However, the power cable is another issue.
ZeroCorpse you are a moron the other warning is all four lights lit up not three and bub....I went through 4 360 units and 2 of those were for rrod and that is a defiative case of RROD. As my light were the same ones that lit up. I have a wii now and a bad arse gaming rig and a ps3 on the way(be here friday)..
I did love the 360 but one can only give so much love.I mean come on peeps why do people stay fighting mad loyal to this system when the company who has made it is not loyal to you. If any body is a multiple repair victim they should rightly jump off the sinking ship.
We all need to start to look at the numbers...360 is now selling the lowest quanity of consoles per month..hdvdv failed and the rrod issue is still an issue.
When will we see the post "360 dead last"? This year is a shoe in I bet.
The RRoD is a huge design flaw in the 360, although MS has tried everything from elevating the chips which often cause the RRoD to stop it from warping due to heat, they've tried dispersing heat differently through new heatsinks and 45nm chips, alas the RRoD still lingers.
Just wondering if MS will take the final step and just redesign the innards of the 360 already.
The quadrants rotate with the console, that's a RRoD
Google image search for RROD - regardless of orientation, the RROD is every light red except the upper right. I don't own a 360 to check, but I vaguely remember something about it having a sensor to swap the LEDs depending on which way is up.
I don't think the Wii suffers from this...
Just towel-trick it! On top of that, it'll look great in the plastic enclosure, lol!
Should have brought the 65nm models, not refurb'ed 90nm.
At Gamestars Live 2004 in London, me and the group I was in found a load of Xbox units which had blue screened. Found it highly hilarious, this is merely an extension.
couldn't have just of been unplugged while in use makes sense with them installing them in all those cases and shit
U should get 1000 gamerpoints for xx amounts of rrod's
yeah, really hard to tax a system with bowling!
MS just doesn't get it. I was *this* close to snagging an Xbox after the price drop on the HD-DVD player, but didn't due to constant RROD reports. Now, I'm sooooo glad I waited. Hello PS3!
Somebody was canned for that
Man, imagine how gamerscores would change if they gave points out for each RROD a user lives through.
i like RRoD....atleast it makes me get up after 1 hour of gaming and walk till the tv to restart the console :)
"Also the Zune is a solid player, much better than a iPod. I know, I used to have one."
That's quite a product endorsement. It's so good that you *used* to have one!
Achievement Unlocked: One millionth RRoD recorded
that red ring of light combination just means the audio cable is unplugged. instead of taking the shit out of the xbox 360 all u ps3 fan boys should actually do some research
It's a feature!
Classic post from Blackstar.
Instead of saying it's just a cable unplugged realize it's the rrod. Stop trying to make excuses for a poorly designed console. Google rrod and you'll see a ton of pictures just like the one in the vid. Secondly the case is vented for all you blind fanboys. Im guessing MS vented it out the back and if not you can clearly see cutouts in the front of the case by the usb ports and a giant one by the memory card slots.
Too good my immediate family remained loyal to Nintendo. And my extended family was first loyal to Sega Genesis, then to Sony Playstation and its descendants. No XBox in my family! (Only a lousy neighbor has an XBox.)
I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this or if it's something I overlooked. But most of the photos I have seen for RROD. Has the upper right quadrant out. Whereas this one has the upper left. Anyone have insight on this?
Uh, first you might want to take a quick look up again. It has the top-RIGHT light out, the other 3 are clearly working. Reminds me of a quote from Full Metal Jacket "You are dumb Private Pyle, but do you expect me to believe that you can't tell left from right?"
"Sir no sir"
"Then you did that on purpose, you want to be different!!"
"Sir no sir!"
SLAP!! "What side was that Private Pyle?"
"Sir left side sir"
"Are You sure, Private Pyle??"
"Sir yes sir" SLAP!!
I find this amusing.
Just because someone you know didn't get the RROD or you didn't get the RROD doesn't mean that this isn't a huge problem. Unless Microshit gets their act together, they're going to lose against Sony. They need to admit they rushed the hardware out of the market for the sake of competing with Sony. Diluted fan-people, they care NOTHING about you, your money, or what you want as a consumer because if they did, they wouldn't have you going through this headache. They may have better online service and a whole library of games but that doesn't change the fact that before a consumer can even play a game, the system fails in a month or a year.
It's unacceptable and ridiculous.
Glad I have a PS3.
And before any of you call me a fanboy, go do some damn research and see if I'm not telling the trith.
they are so generous for offering a 3 year warranty for a dud. 16% may not be a majority, but most electronic manufacturers operate at
