Palm Centro now official on AT&T
Wow, sure enough, those green buttons are straight up legit -- who'd have thought? The long-rumored GSM cut of the Palm Centro is now officially available on AT&T in the wake of Sprint's expiring exclusivity, giving a whole new world of customers access to the freakishly small (yet strangely adorable) Garnet handset. Unlike Sprint's version, the GSM Centro tops out with EDGE data for a moderately less snappy browsing experience; otherwise, though, your $99 on contract is going to buy you a 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth 1.2, support for AT&T's push-to-talk service, and a full (albeit miniaturized) QWERTY keypad. So who's liking this more than the white / gray scheme we'd seen before?

honestly, I like the green
Craig @ Feb 19th 2008 12:40AM
I kinda like the green. It's different...in a good way.
Fadakar @ Feb 19th 2008 2:44AM
I wish Sprint got this color, I know it doesn't matter but both white and green being my favorite colors and with Sprint's tendency to get crap phones I realize the legacy stands strong. :p
Dan @ Feb 19th 2008 12:48AM
Honestly, I dont like edge!
Johan S @ Feb 19th 2008 12:49AM
Why does it come with such a crappy browser?
$99 with a new contract?
$399 without a contract. That sucks.
With no contract, it costs the same as an iPhone (which people buy without a contract and then illegally hax0r).
This phone would have been great if it was $99 or *gasp* less without a contract AND came with a decent browser (not the non full HTML one that comes with it).
Craig @ Feb 19th 2008 1:07AM
Why do you think Blazer is particularly crappy? It works on 99% of the sites I visit and the only things I can think of that it doesn't do at all is Java and Flash, which isn't that surprising on a limited-processor device like this. Could it be better? Sure, but I wouldn't call it crappy.

Shut up...
Bernhard @ Feb 19th 2008 2:28AM
Does the iPhone even have as many capabilities as a Centro? You should consider the included software and abilities such as opening native 2007 office docs.
Libb @ Feb 19th 2008 3:38AM
Blazer works perfectly fine for the device it's on. You don't have a fancy super-high-res multi-touch screen on a Treo (ok, so TECHNICALLY, a Treo's 320x320 has a higher PPI than the iPhone's 320x480, but you have to factor Garnet's lack of font anti-aliasing (and lack of decent fonts in general) - even if you did display full HTML, it would look HIDEOUS), especially since most uses for an AJAX-supporting browser are negated by either, a. WAP versions of mobile-focused sites (Twitter, Engadget, Facebook, etc.), or b. Native Palm OS apps (Google Maps, Bejeweled)
If you desperately need full HTML, "pirate" the deprecated JVM and run Opera Mini 4.
zephead @ Feb 19th 2008 12:50AM
No 3G? :(
TheNotoriousMAZ @ Feb 19th 2008 12:57AM
My local at&t store had this thing in on Friday. I'm surprised it took engadget this long. The phone is ok, but when you can now get the blackberry curve and blackjack ii at the same price, I don't know why anyone would chose this thing over those unless you're a real palm junkie.
Andrew Swanson @ Feb 19th 2008 1:29AM
took engadget this long? they've been reporting on it, but just waiting for ATT to make it "official" for their "official" announcement. do you even read this site?
Jamma @ Feb 19th 2008 2:30AM
hey, it's YOUR fault engadget took this long! if you saw them in your store, then take a pic and send it to engadget. Don't sit on your arse and hope they will go to your AT & T store
Reid @ Feb 19th 2008 12:58AM
I like the green buttons too.
torqueo @ Feb 19th 2008 1:00AM
2G and Bluetooth 1.2 in 2008? Err...
cruci fiction @ Feb 19th 2008 12:28PM
Yeah, is this thing an iPhone or something? For $99 you should get every brand new technology there is!
torqueo @ Feb 19th 2008 12:49PM
3G and Bluetooth 2.0 are hardly "brand new".
Kevin @ Feb 19th 2008 1:03AM
Saw that this as the Bay St Emeryville ATT store today btw
nxtiak @ Feb 19th 2008 1:27AM
/me runs to eBay to find an unlocked one so I can use on T-Mobile
O2 @ Feb 19th 2008 2:15AM
I still prefer slide out keyboard from underneath like the earlier HTC model than this blackberry form factor.
webon @ Feb 19th 2008 3:04AM
maybe vote comment up green should change to the "centro" green cuz me likes
Dave @ Feb 19th 2008 8:32AM
Say wha, Yoda?
Libb @ Feb 19th 2008 3:31AM
They had to taunt me with that picture of XM Mobile, the one thing my Sprint Treo 755p can't do that I would kill for. *sigh*
(Preemptive: Yeah, I know Sprint offers Sirius Mobile. That's the point - I hate teh DogStar.)
P.S. The green and white actually looks pretty nifty in a counter-culture sort of way, although I think a green phone with white dialpad would look even better.
Primoz @ Feb 19th 2008 3:59AM
Why does it have so many buttons?
Version 1.0 @ Feb 19th 2008 6:24AM
Palm should just follow the way of HD DVD...
freakmarket @ Feb 19th 2008 10:16AM
There isn't even a mention of it on Palm.com ... it's launch day is today for the ATT model and nothing. Shouldn't it be on the front page? Palm must want to keep it secret.
Blazer is the worst mobile browser EVER ...
Palm ... stop releasing Treos and go back to the classroom ... come back out to the playground when you have a next generation unit. Maybe it will have a state of the art Pong game on it.
Kiteless @ Feb 19th 2008 10:34AM
Not that I have a lot of room to complain as I have an iPhone with EDGE, but WTF is wrong with you Palm!?!?! Just LOOK at the phones your are competing against. How many of them have 3G? I have seen the Centro, it has to be twice as thick as a Moto-Q or Black Jack, but no 3G? Come on guys, it is not hard to see whatthe PDA comsumer wants. Just read the comments on Engadged (mobile).
Lee @ Feb 19th 2008 11:44AM
I like the green, but what's the point? No 3G, a crappy camera, no bluetooth 2.0, and the Palm OS? No thanks.
Vinay Manayathara @ Feb 21st 2008 8:58PM
interesting... i havent seen a good palm phone/pda since the 650 of like 4 yrs ago. it might be old but it can offer the same things thins thing can, but it also runs faster, and it isnt green x)
