Alien or zombie threat averted: the spy satellite has been destroyed... probably
Just like the Navy told us, they shot that nasty satellite out of the sky with the kind of laser-like precision they've been claiming they're capable of for years. At right around 10:30 this evening, expensive missiles were fired from the deck of the USS Lake Erie, traveling into space at an excess of 5,000mph, which then slammed into the Alien / zombie-juice / Russian controlled satellite (which itself was traveling at 17,000mph). Right now details are still sketchy on just how much damage was done to the object, but word on the street (aka, from the Navy) is that just about any hit to the satellite would put it out of our misery, due to the speed and trajectory at which it's traveling. The story is still developing, so if any of the zombie spore does manage to reach Earth and spark an undead holocaust, we'll be the first to let you know.

They were, however, replaced with walkie talkies.
You didn't think they actually spent ten thousand dollars for a hammer, thirty thousand for a toilet seat, did you?
Well people , the aliens have already landed

Kids, are you playing in the satellite debris again?
This: http://i.l.cnn.net/cnn/2008/TECH/space/02/20/satellite.shootdown/t1home.2254.missile.ap.jpg
was just on CNN's homepage, it may still be there if you check it out..
Stock photo, I think.
Anyone have any proof that the mission was a success. I doubt if there's any proof. It's done and forgotten. Next.
umm... hate to break it to you, but if there's no 'proof' remaining then the mission was a sucess
you shot down the sattellite? NO! you fools! That's what THEY wanted you to do!!!
Commander in chief president bush assisted the USS Erie today by making explosion noises as the target was hit
He said "chhhhhh piwwwwwww bbaaaannnnngggggg" in a statement earlier today.
you changed your avatar from the "I can't believe its not butter" to power rangers?
i tried to think of the coolest thing in the universe, firstly i came up with myself and i then decided it was time to change, so now it's the power rangers
go go power rangers!
In the late 70s a friend of mine had a security clearance as part of a job he was doing on a military base. He told me he rode in a helecopter that burned up a couple of trees with a "laser beam". I never really knew whether to believe him until now. So what else have "they" got that we don't know about?
but we knew about this, and we know about the frikin' lasers
boeing have been making ones that can burn missiles fuel tanks for ever
why is this big news, the usa shoots down these things all the time. probably b/c it's only been up there for a month and it's a spooky spy sat and the media sucks
well this video form today was me testing out my new photon torpedo
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/us/2008/02/20/am.hotshots.meteor.cnn
Mr. Worf, fire phasers!
Firing phasers!
doo-doo... doo-doo
hilarious!
You mean, Photon Torpedoes?
No need to waste a photon torpedo on a puny 20th century crude satellite.
Where is master chief? Here comes the flood!
I get a kick outta how, when some other country pulls off a stunt like this,..
the American government cries like a B____ saying how bad it is, and thier not
supposed to do it.
And yet, they turn around and do the same S___.
Don't you just like our Two-Faced and Double-Standard government?
Except that it wasn't the same. Kind of undercuts your complaint.
so if the guy that launches these missiles has direct tv and is unhappy with his service.....
aw man you guys didn't put "FROM USA, WITH LOVE" on the rockets :[
I still think this whole thing was a load of bullshit. I see several REAL reasons for this.
1. This is PR designed to make the metric shit ton of money we've poured into the missile intercept program over the years look like its producing results. Granted they HAVE gotten better but its still, pardon the pun, hit or miss.
2. _IF_ something came down, enough might survive that in the right hands a foreign power could gleam some classified info on its design...that at least could be a legit reason
3. Ummm Something to do on a Wednesday night?
Depending on how much surface there is on this thing when reentering the atmosphere that surface temp of the thing can reach upwards of 4,000* F. I don't give a shit what fuel is on board. Short of plutonium, any traditional fuel would easily burn up in those temps. And the sat itself? While it’s possible some of it would survive the fall we would be talking something pathetically small. Dear god we let Skylab something monstrously larger drop from the sky.....this is the largest piece that remained: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Skylabfragment.JPG
Finally All the interviews I’ve seen with someone from the DoD PR dept. They keep mentioning they would be embarrassed if this dropped in some other country’s back yard. Please. The whole US military trying to be the soft caring military now…As if everyone has forgotten Iraq....No one gives a shit about this. There are PLENTY of other things the world is pissed the fuck off at us for. So no. This is a smoke screen blown out of someone's ass. I don't know what the real reason is behind it but there is one.

I think Engadget had a glitch...The thing didn't refresh and when I hit F5....oh well.

Ummm huh? No idea what happened here....
please dont give this guy a gun
or the gun will 'glitch' and 'huh what happened here' untill we're all dead.
Can't help it when I hit the add comments button once and Engadget fucks up.
BRAINS... BRAINS!
I'm sorry but shooting missiles at friggin satellites beats Crysis (or Doom) any day.
The only thing that could possibly beat it? Shooting friggin laser beams instead.
HYPOCRITE!!! NOTHING BEATS DOOM!! NOTHING!!!!!
They missed.
Did noone consider that if they had video footage from another satellite, or onboard cam, that they would keep it classified?
It's not a personal camera's footage that can easily get slipped out by bored soldiers.
Am I the only person to wonder if this actually happened? I mean we only have their word that there was a rogue satellite and we only have their word that they shot it down.
Yes right, we know. And we didn't go to the moon and how ABOUT #7 WTC?
Go away.
Try looking down the back of your sofa, maybe that's where you left your sense of humour.
I bet you're American.
2008 - The year the space war began.
Cold War II: The Final Frontier
Gizmodo.com has a video of it. They actually hit it! :0
I'm gonna stand in my back yard with a large net, and catch some of the debris and throw it up on eBay.
Dude its Ebay.....go to a scrap yard and pick up a headlight shroud and sell it. There will be at least one person on Ebay who will buy it. Guaranteed.
Looks like an old Telstar communications satellite-how long has it been up there? Is that why my TV w/ a Navy link went dead for a few hours?
wait 25 years for the declassified video.
Here is the video

This is how the Navy shot down TWA 800...
Here is the Raytheon Website with details of the modified SM-3 missile used to take it out complete with video.

So we can protect are selves from alien attacks! Wait why would we even develop technology like that unless we were waiting for real aliens.... http://alien-ufo-research.com/ufo_videos
Maybe I should start to be worried.
