Sprint gearing up to offer $60 / month unlimited calling plan?
After yesterday's barrage of unlimited calling plans left us all terribly underwhelmed, it seems as if Sprint is hoping to emerge as the knight in shining armor by undercutting the oh-so-popular $99 price point. According to unspecified "analysts," the carrier is gearing up to "offer flat-rate calling plans at up to a 40-percent discount to its rivals," meaning that yappers could talk 'til their batteries died (and then some) for around $60 a month. Of course, Sprint has yet to confirm nor deny the reports, but we're all for a price war in the cellular space, regardless.

Sprint sucks, but for sixty bucks a month, even my ears perked up.
Prokanda @ Feb 20th 2008 7:34PM
Same. Especially since if verizon doesn't come out with something first (which they TRY to do most of the time), they take notice and usually try to outdo the other providers...
so if they [sprint] come out with 60 bucks unlimited... verizon is soon to follow. this would be good news for all... well, those of us not stuck with GSM. [/vom]

Sprint could offer it for 1$ and I would still not be on of their customers. I have heard so many horror stories about their customer service from friends and clients that I would be wary of using them.
Of course since Sprint SUED me for thousands of dollars for an account that was never even mine, it is a bit more personal too. Ohh, and the account did not even have my name. It was a SOC# number that had a digit misplaced.
Take all that into consideration and everybody I have ever dealt with (In Las Vegas) had a ton of dropped calls to me with their phones.
So I am not really surprised about this. Sprint really has to do something to compete since I think they have burned more customers then some wireless companies have ever had to begin with.
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 12:49PM
im not going with anyone til it reaches a cool 50
nd @ Feb 20th 2008 12:59PM
You seriously don't have a cell phone?
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 1:06PM
what can i say? i love not wasting money.
Craig B. @ Feb 20th 2008 1:14PM
There's always Metro Piece of S....MetroPCS, sorry. They're $50 and under, that is, if you consider it ceullular service when you can't hold a signal for more than 5 minutes straight.
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 1:23PM
a tomato can tied to string is more reliable than metro
Galley @ Feb 20th 2008 1:55PM
My Sprint bill is only $39.99 a month, but then again, I'm not a big talker.
nd @ Feb 20th 2008 2:19PM
"a tomato can tied to string is more reliable than metro"
how do you know? you don't have a cell phone.
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 2:36PM
did anyone say ever? i sure didnt, oh and thanks for the low ranks folks nice to see you idiots are willing to throw away your money.
Brian @ Feb 20th 2008 2:43PM
So... as a general rule, calling people names for down-ranking you doesn't help the situation. It actually makes you look kind of childish.
But hey, at least you didn't use the word "troll"...
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 2:48PM
cool, did engadget give u a sash to go along with the whistle?
JohnnyChimpo @ Feb 20th 2008 12:50PM
Pack that with the $15/month for unlimited EVDO and your in business!
JohnnyChimpo @ Feb 20th 2008 12:51PM
or better yet, check out Sprints SERO plan if ur making the switch.
adam @ Feb 20th 2008 1:13PM
Definately. I thoroughly enjoy my 500min, Unlimited Data & Unlimited SMS for $35/month including taxes.
VZWguy @ Feb 20th 2008 1:08PM
annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd
sprint goes under less than a year after that announcement HAHA
Zach @ Feb 20th 2008 1:07PM
so what? Verizon will take it over and the probably won't force you into a new price plan right away. For the money it's a damn good deal. If sprints deals are good enough when android comes out I might just have to switch.
VZWguy @ Feb 20th 2008 1:13PM
Sprint has always been cheaper, with the widley available SERO plans for a fraction of the cost, and poor business choices they have been plunging face first into selling for some time now.
Todd @ Feb 20th 2008 12:51PM
I think I'll stick with my $30 a month 500 minute unlimited data Sprint Sero plan.
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 1:07PM
is it really 30 a month? or is it 50 after all the fees and taxes? (serious question btw)
bob cobb @ Feb 20th 2008 1:09PM
$36 for me
Patrick @ Feb 20th 2008 1:10PM
it's $30 a month, with taxes it's like $37.
adam @ Feb 20th 2008 1:16PM
Mine ends up being 35 and change a month.
riggs @ Feb 20th 2008 1:57PM
where do u guys live? im in NY btw.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Feb 20th 2008 4:47PM
my SERO plan comes up as 34 bucks a mo. Taxes included and I'm in Chicago
grewell912 @ Feb 20th 2008 9:20PM
34.68 a month here, including taxes.
D Magic @ Feb 20th 2008 12:58PM
Every time some post about sprint's voice package is annouced, some goober always brags about their "SERO" plan & how lucky they are tat tey don't pay retail....
Damm I wish i had a hook up too...
I don't gloat about how my cable is free cause i hook it up myself....
nd @ Feb 20th 2008 1:03PM
Just go into a store and ask. I pay $71.80/month for:
1250 anytime min
unlimited night & weekend
unlimited Sprint to Sprint
500 texts
unlimited Sprint Vision data
Phone warranty and accidental protection
taxes and fees
It aint bad, and I know Sprint is known for their HORRID customer service, but just don't EVER call them- go to a store where the people are decent and they will take care of you.
LordJohnWhorfin @ Feb 20th 2008 1:04PM
Anybody can get SERO, for crying out loud! Google it.
lanemeyer67ss @ Feb 20th 2008 1:04PM
Anyone can sign up for SERO. You too can have a hookup. It's called Google.
http://wiki.howardforums.com/index.php/SPRINT_SERO#How_do_I_sign_up_for_SERO.3F
Todd @ Feb 20th 2008 1:13PM
Guess I'm the goober!
But seriously it's easy as pie to get Sero no hookup needed.
Goober, goober. For some reason I want to eat turkey now.
Scott @ Feb 20th 2008 2:11PM
You don't need a "hook up," you need basic reading skills and access to Google.
simplyjas @ Feb 20th 2008 12:57PM
Wow, that would be awesome. I was with sprint for over 8 years and finally broke down a few months back switched to Cingular. For this deal, I would switch back. However, would this include the net, probably not. How much more for unlimited net, probably $20. So in total $80 so far. Then how about txt message, probably another $10. $90 total so far, plus tax and fees. Looking at a total bill of around $100.
Alan @ Feb 20th 2008 1:00PM
please please let there be a price war!
kal326 @ Feb 20th 2008 2:23PM
Indeed, let the war begin. Everybody was quick to play the "me too" game at $100, lets see if the trend continues.
Zach @ Feb 20th 2008 1:07PM
Unlimited (unless part of a family plan at some point in the future where I actually get a family) is pointless to me. The $40 plan offers far more than enough minutes for me with AT&T. I'm just pissed that the plans haven't droped bellow the $40 dollar price point. Cingular use to have a $30 dollar plan that had 250 minutes, but with rollover and free mobile to mobile too meany people used it. It was apparently too good a deal so they ditched it. Now, they want everyone to get data too to push the cost up (not down). Please oh please get a price war going!!!!
Allen @ Feb 20th 2008 1:09PM
First 4G wireless network in the US? Check.
First $60 calling plan? Check.
First phone company to distribute free copies of Will Wrights Spore with a phone? Next on the list.
Sprint is well on its way to winning me from AT&T.
Adam Wroblaski @ Feb 20th 2008 1:10PM
lets hope this fight continues, maybe we'll finally have that cellular revolution where bandwidth is the issue, not minutes (like what happened to the internet some years ago)
Cyque @ Feb 20th 2008 1:17PM
It is amazing just how fast something like this could put Sprint right back on the map. Sure SERO has been around for a while but it is not advertised and questionably legitimate. A real in your face price war sure would be a nice change.
James @ Feb 20th 2008 1:18PM
What's the deal with unlimited calling? With most companies doing free mobile to mobile and nights and weekends and even rollover, how many minutes do you really need?
Give me 500-700 minutes but unlimited data! Text! If nobody does, I'm switching to helio next month. They seem to be the only one that gets it.
LordJohnWhorfin @ Feb 20th 2008 1:34PM
Sprint SERO gives you 500 anytime minutes, unlimited EVDO data (no proxy bullcrap) and unlimited text for $30/month.
CGreenFL @ Feb 20th 2008 2:03PM
So true my friend... Helio has the right mindset. I'm not sure where everyone is from. But where I'm from unlimited means limit less...Or without limits. If these plans don't give you txt..pics..video msgs and voice than they are just not that useful. Can't knock them for the step in the right direction though.
gb @ Feb 20th 2008 3:07PM
Plus, Helio uses Sprint's service anyway. So if you're going to switch, I don't see the advantage of going to Sprint over Helio. My calling plan is $65. Sure, it's only 500 minutes, but I never go close to that, and the real kicker is unlimited 3G data, which I use a lot more anyway. I can't imagine switching to verizon or AT&T and paying $100 "unlimited" then paying a for a data plan on top of that.
Now, if Helio can just manage to stay in business...
James @ Feb 20th 2008 6:56PM
@LJW: Yeah, I looked into the Sero plan, it's tempting. Though, I'm not thrilled with the idea of not being able to do a family plan for my wife and I. Also, I really want a qwerty board and have never liked the crammed ones on the palms and such. I would much rather have something like the Rumor with the slide out keyboard but that doesn't have EVDO! A friend just got the Ocean, I'm going to check out his first hand. Plus, I like the idea of the beacon thing, and I still use myspace and facebook.
@gb: I know, data plans are $40 extra for me with AT&T! Ummm, no thanks! And yeah, all this talk about Helio wanting to sell itself isn't all that comforting!
Bender123 @ Feb 20th 2008 1:20PM
Sero is great and my recent Sprint experience has been fantastic. It seems there are more calls going to English speaking folks as of late and they seem to at least be giving this new fangled customer service thing a try...
NHAnimator @ Feb 20th 2008 1:49PM
The whole industry can bite me.
The reason that Southwest and JetBlue are the only profitable airlines these days is because they (generally) have good service, good prices and listen to their customers.
The whole mobile industry still charges an arm and a leg for even basic services. Customer service and coverage is bad for all of them. But what are you going to do, switch to another company that gives you the same? If any company ever stepped up to bat and actually listened to their customers the way that those airlines do, they would be sure to get my business.
Unfortunately, they are all tied for dead last in my book. And unfortunately, I have to use one of them. Yesterday, it was AT&T/Cingular/AT&T. Today it's Sprint/Nextel Sprint/Whatever. It's like they are working together to suck and gouge. While they all get rich, I get a crappy product.
Sorry. I know it's OT, but I just have to vent once in a while or they put me back on meds.
carmen @ Feb 20th 2008 3:58PM
I guess your still bitter about 18-1
Scott @ Feb 20th 2008 2:21PM
"The whole mobile industry still charges an arm and a leg for even basic services. "
Still better than the LANDLINE industry that charges $50 "activation fee" on a phone line that already physically exists at your house!
Not to mention it doesn't include any features at all. No forwarding, no voice mail, no long distance, nothing!
Theo @ Feb 21st 2008 2:27AM
I pay $52 include tax,
1000 anytime
night start at 8pm
unlimited night and weekends
unlimited text
unlimited web/tv
I live in OC/CA never had a problem with Sprint
