360 and PS3 were in because they released new versions for sale in 2007 -- Wii had no new console versions. This was made clear during the voting phase.
My mistake, sorry.
the Nokia N95 8GB can have a multi-touch interface hacked into it and I can also control OS X through it. So it should be called Apple N95 8GB and win all categories?
You are quite right about Apple haters, but the iPhone is still not a smartphone. Jailbreaking is not a product feature and Jobs saying it's a smartphone still does not make it a smartphone. They just use this classification, (1) so the market numbers look better, (2) when it will finally reach potential they don't have to modify the marketing message.
By your logic I could put N95 8GB (based on capability) in the following extra categories:
- Desktop of the Year (TV out, bluetooth keyboard, uPnP, Wifi etc.), Digital Camera of the Year (how many of those can geotag, OtA upload to Flickr?), Game Console of the Year (N-gage will come out, right?).
All I'm saying that iPhone shouldn't be in the smartphone category. It can win all other categories, I don't mind (I actually voted as most anticipated for 2008, because of the SDK).
Point of order: The only category the AppleTV is nominated in is "Worst Gadget of the Year".
Many of the comments bemoan the fact Apple products have received so many nominations and votes.
But the same people complaining must have voted in order to see the results… Vocal minority maybe?
I nominate Optimus Maximus for the Vaporware of the Year Award.
I'm surprised Apple's new mouse didn't make it into the "peripheral of the year" category...I've used it a couple of times, and found the scroll ball useful, and the hidden right-click recognition fascinating...for all the noise about the keyboard, the mouse is much more of a change.
wtf
y so many apple fans?
Damn it guys! I told you to warn me few days before the apple convention started ... I would bring my "Apple thin aluminum keyboard" with me ...
It was really hard for me to pick between a 3G iPhone and an Android phone. In the end, I picked Android, simply because I know it will do more. SD slots, tactile keyboards, etc, definitely looking forward to it.
Vocal minority indeed.
The thing is that Apple haters are SO vocal about their hatred of all things Apple, they make it appear like there are more of them around-- But that's an illusion. It's just that Apple haters are so very proficient at sputtering and gnashing their teeth whilst spouting 15-year-old false stereotypes about Apple that they tend to be the ones you see on these message boards.
The Apple fans have some level of tact and sophistication, apparently, and don't rise to the insults.
Often, the really rabid Apple-haters are the same people who equate Apple with homosexuality (for some reason) and they therefore vehemently scream about how awful Apple is as a way of expressing their deep homophobia... All based on an erroneous assumption, of course. All Apple users aren't gay, yet for some reason there's this small, very vocal minority that believes this to be true.
They can't publicly say, "I hate gay people" these days, so instead they say, "I hate Apple fanboys" thinking it's the same thing.
This is, of course, just one little section of the Apple haters. Some are guys who physically resemble Linus Torvalds, and they're just so into the nerd-end of the pool that they can't fathom using a computer that isn't built to be disassembled by the end-user. Others are "manly men" who think Apple or Mac are synonymous with "hippies" or "artsy fartsy types."
A few are rabid conservatives who think that Apple's association with Al Gore makes them "the enemy."
Ignore their wailing. They're loud, but as we see from the vote results, their voter turnout is unimpressive. They'll make four accounts to tell you how much they hate Apple, but even that doesn't get them the votes to beat the good customer service, product design, and general end-user satisfaction of Apple.
It's not just brand loyalty winning those votes-- It's damn good design and support.
What are you on? I need to get that stuff also...
only 72 people voted for the P2?!?!?!?!?!??
commom people, even if you are an apple fanboy, you have to admit that answering a phone through an Mp3 player, and having free games, is cooler that the iPod touch!
I like to think of myself as someone who's up on their tech info, mainly thanks to engadget, but i found myself not knowing half the stuff up there.
Probably why Apple stuff is doing so well, because it's advertised everywhere. I'd never even heard of that Blackbird thing, checked it out though, nice pc if a bit OTT.
Never knew iPhone was a SMARTPhone
poor psp slim vii got more votes than it :/
Only 3.5% voted for Keepon? You guys disgust me.
Nice.
I really didn't expect much from this "awards"
Because apparently EG's demographics is mainly composed of fanbois, that tend to be just an itsy, bitsy, witsy brain washed by herJobs charisma und commercial-marketing genius. If not that, I really can't figure out why would they be so child like as to vote "apple" without even thinking what the other competitors have to offer.
I would have loved to see an Engadget Awards selected by some non biased gadgetry authorities, such as engadget's editors (if thats possible) or invited jurors, that would've definitely been interesting reading, and even useful to some extent.
oh well maybe next year
Engadget = omg-APPLE-ftw! + M$ sux
apparently every one with a Mac or iPhone reads engadget
sigh..too much apple...is there anything new?
Where is the Nintendo Wii? I guess the best selling 3rd gen console is not good enough to make your awards. Wii rocks!!
Wow, the iTard fanboys are out in full force. How the f*ck does the iMac beat the HP Blackbird? What the hell are those retards thinking?
Simple - it doesn't come with Windows installed.
Yeah, I'm pissed at Mickeysloth. XP blew up on my wife's ACER laptop wo weeks ago - when she went to use her restore disks it blew up again, BUT NOT BEFORE WIPING ALL OF HER DATA.
Let's face it - Windows is crap.
Oh - my wife's computer has Ubuntu installed on it now.
YOU ARE AN IDIOT, 1 the imac is way sexier than your gay ass blackbird, 2 if i wanted a standard pc that cost a fuckign million dollars ill configure my own power mac u idiot, HP PRODUCTS SUCK
For a perfect example of an iTard, see comment above ^^^^^^^^
They still sell power macs? That's funny. So shut the hell up you god damn retard.
Is there really any point to this than just an Apple-cade?
and what's that whole "vista and foleo by popular demand" shit? oh, i wonder which 'gadget' will win that category. If it doesn't fit in that category then don't add it, popular demand or not. Give it a fair chance.
Jeeze!! This is all just disgusting. Worse yet, the results of this farce will be reference to in future articles as is it was fact and accurate views.
Being an owner of Apple products, I must admit, the Apple ridiculousity is pretty strong 'round these parts.
How the iPhone snuck into the smartphone category is beyond me. There is absolutely no way that should be beating out something like the N95 8GB.
I guess a ton of people shoot for function (or lack thereof) following form. Oh well.
Aw! Apple aluminium kb is the Peripheral of the year?! Orly? I'm afraid of an army of apple well trained bots, clicking the voting thru the proxies. They're everywhere!
P.S.: I wonder why the hell "apple...starbucks..." is not the winner. Software bug?
Hey Ryan, where's that follow up[ to the Palm Foleo: the exclusive first and final hands-on story?
The best robot is pleo ;-)
http://www.pleo-web.de
OMG!! It takes until the 3rd page of comments to read something other than the apple/windows wars!!
PLEO is like nothing ever seen before! I've been following it's developement ever since I saw the very first intro video quite a while ago (yrs).
The very first AI that you can own in your own home, PLEO is groundbreaking.
Thank you UGOBE! If I could have only afforded one of the first 2000!!!
PLEO ROCKS
The list is - interesting. I had to make some hard choices. An example would be best desktop - I don't know how well the BlackBird or the Alienware support Linux, and I won't run Windows, so I voted for the Apple.
In Laptops you've got the EEE - which really isn't a laptop. I'm not quite sure what it is, but it isn't a laptop.
Then there's HDTV - don't know anything about them, didn't vote.
Smart Phones/Dumb Phones - should probably be merged, there really isn't a heck of a lot of difference.
Game Console of the year - hey, why didn't someone nominate the C64? It's better than what's listed (and yes - I'm serious - the graphics get better, and the game play gets lousier). Besides with VICE any of the laptops or desktops becomes a console. Nice!
Hahahahahahahah!
Worst survey ever.
I guarantee that half of the Apple based votes are by fanbois who don't even own what they're voting for.
Gotta love n00bs.
Vote #1 ASUS Eee. Cheap, powerful (when overclocked) and isn't an iPhone. :)
No Wii ? What the F#$ is a vi ?
I am loving all the Apple fan boy voting going on. Apple has SOME good products but the voting results are very skewed in places where they shouldn't be.
eh only thing though about leopard is that they fixed the problems pretty quickly unlike microsoft which waits like half a century before they figure out oh man this is a problem
and on the voting, i duno im a mac and a pc user, gaming mostly on the pc and work on my mac
i just love the simplicity of the mac, its just straight forward
pc is just awesome for gaming but vista errr needs a fix haha, but i run windows xp on my machine =)
but one thing no matter what i think iphone is great, i have owned one for many months and im still very satisfied with it unlike other phones i have owned in the past which have included motorola razr, v710, blackberry's, htc smartphones, motoQ, etc...
god damn apple fan boys.
Dear Engadget!
I'm trying to find justification for your inclusion of Vista and Foleo in the worst gadget category. Is it purely because of "popular demand"? ;-)
If yes, then by the same logic ("popular demand"), please remove Apple iPhone from the smartphone category (it's fit for both cellphone and media device - which is why the iPhone is so great). It is not yet a smartphone in a sense that you could (legally) install applications on it - as many commenters pointed it out here. :-)
If you don't do it - of course nothing happens :-) I understand that it _pays_ to focus on "popular demand", but I've already quit reading Gizmodo because of it (although I use a nice Macbook and an iPod at home).
Your faithful reader (until 1st March at least).
amby: the Foleo inclusion is easy. Engadget helped killed it.
A lot of apple fans here...........
I see that the jobsian cool-ade drinkers have wasted no time in skewing yet another engadget poll.
It is funny when people think that in order for a phone to be smart, it must be hard enough for every one to figer out how to use. The iPhone is smart. In fact it is so smart, it just learned new tricks 3 weeks ago when it got an automatic software upgrade. 50% of all Mobile web browsing was done on an iPhone. It is so smart that any one can start using all its functions with in minutes and with out any manual. Functions like Web Browsing, Music, Video and Photos, Full calender, full e-mail with photos, excell, word and pdf readable attachments, Watch Y-Tube, Text Messengering and finally make phone calls. The iPhone is so smart that it does all of the above and more with out letting us know that it is so smart.
No one but _you_ has suggested the iPhone is not a smartphone because it's too easy to use.
The primary argument relies on the conventional definition of a smartphone: a phone with a sufficiently general-purpose OS and sufficiently liberal restrictions that users may install arbitrary applications on it, just like a computer.
The iPhone has the OS, but the present restrictions prevent the non-jailbroken iPhone from meeting the above definition.
It's like the difference between an "electronic organizer" and a Palm, back in the day. (Except that the iPhone isn't proportionately cheaper, like the electronic organizer was, because it adds goo-goo graphics.)
How could you people vote for the Sony P.O.S. XBR over the Pioneer Kuro series?? You're all sick and don't know what to look for in a TV.
yea there r so many apple fanboys... cmon... apple imac beating an alienware (esp on laptop... i will admit the air is nice, b/c i have one. but specs wise they get owned... esp. when the new alienware comes out!)? and iphone/ipod touch beating an archos 605 wifi... were you ppl dropped on your head as babies? you just put down the product you knew from constant brainwashing... the 605 came out first but little or no advertising was done for it in the US, you think the ipod touch/ipod/iphones r so good b/c u watch to much friggin tv, seenin all those apple ads.
Well, I admit these 2007 awards really suck. I just hope they don't repeat the same mistake in 2008. For 2008, I anticipate the wireless technology winner would be the 700-MHz spectrum.
Glad to see that apple isn't getting votes just because it's apple...
This Engadget Awards show one thing that saddens me: after Calacanis sold Weblogs, Inc. to AOL, I'm waiting for the day that it morphs into Gizmodo. At least the level of sensationalism is approaching it.
And sorry, if I want to read sensationalism, I go read ElReg or l'INQ, they're British, the inventors of tabloid journalism, after all.
I would just like to say iRobot Rules!
I've found the I Robot Roomba 500 series to be both a very clever development, and a practical machine for the home.
