Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on to hit $49.99?
Truthfully, we reckon this moment is inevitable. With HD DVD hung out to dry by everyone and their long lost cousin, it's simply a matter of time before players are being traded for rides on the carousel. Nevertheless, reports are already circulating that Microsoft's Xbox 360 add-on drive could sink to $49.99 in the not-too-distant future, which may actually make it worth grabbing for the very respectable library of HD DVD titles already out there. Whatever you do, don't pay full price for this thing.

I'd take it for free...to sell on eBay for $20. My personal experience is that ownership of DVD/Blu-ray movies goes down with age (except for the ones that your kids like to watch over and over). What little time the (physical) movie rental business has left will be dominated by Blu-ray and DVD. I give it 2 years before VOD HD becomes ubiquitous. (By the time BD players reach the price point I am willing to pay-to rent BD movies from Netflix-it may be too late for physical media to make a real profit anyway.) People will abandon brick and mortar video sections the same way they did with CD sections. I wonder if there are studies/stats to show the correlation of age to movie ownership. Personally, I have no plans to replace the DVD versions of my all-time favs (that I currently own from years past) with Blu-ray versions. The older you get, time (and space) are at a premium.
The 5 DVD offer ends on 28th Feb so be quick!
Why buy into that dead format? Only Xbox 360 user have to gain from this at the moment as those who have brought the Add-on can now have a backup....but one thing.
What are you guys going to do when in 6months - 1yr you CANT get on the NET?
Hmm... Could be nice as an external CD/DVD-rom drive.
actually it IS a nice cd/dvd/HD-DVD drive ... LOL
waste. i hope there is an engadget report a few months from now showing millions of hd dvd players sitting in a landfill
I guess if you use the 360 as you primary dvd player, you could get this to cut down on your swapping of discs. So you could always keep a game in the 360 and a dvd in the add on drive. Laziness ftw!
'available til stocks last'
That doesn't make sense??!
sorry was meant for guerilla779.
Damn reply button didnt work!
Makes perfect sense. The Parrot is DEAD man. DEAD. They are not going to make more dead parrots.

Who in their right mind would by a HD DVD player at ANY price?
You know what I hate? When people reply to my comment with the reply button, but their response has absolutely nothing to do with my comment. Like at the top of this article, I wrote a comment which 6 people responded to. The last 5 of the 6 replies were in response to the first reply, but the first reply was of no relevance to my original comment. I have my comments set up so that I get an e-mail when someone replies to one of them. I think it's kinda interesting to see what people have to say in response to my comments, and it's nice to get a different point of view. However, I don't really appreciate it when a bunch of random crap causes my e-mail account to get bombarded by notifications from Engadget, only to discover that they're to inform me that some no talent asssclown replied to my comment.
Yes, I did include an Office Space reference in there. It was fun.
Oh, sorry, my give-a-shit-ometer must be broken.
Want to try that again?
There's a little box that says "E-Mail me when someone replies to this comment," feel free to uncheck it.
it's because people think they have to click somewhere to get a comment box, and they always see the reply button on the first post and assume that's how they post a comment
Mr. MMalecky, a simple tl;dr would have been sufficient, since you clearly didn't actually read my entire post. I said that I choose to have the e-mail notifications enabled, since I like to see what other people have to say.
Meh.
I'm sure you'll still be able to get one for full price on eBay and Craigslist.
That is bad news for MS
test
I wouldn't care if it were marked down to $10. I wouldn't keep an extra piece of equipment laying around just to play vaporware.
how is it vaporware, it was most definitely released and sold pretty well
Kmart.com has it for $49.95 right now.
Even the $50.00 price tag seems high to me. Just throwing good money after bad.
how ironic would it be to gut it and add a blu-ray drive to it? im debating getting it just for the furture when blu-ray drives become cheaper. hmmm...
Yup i can agree with a lot of you... i too have been buying them like crazy,
but in my case i have been going to my local best buy and circuit city.
