NTT DoCoMo rolls out high res Panasonic P905i Viera phone
Last we saw Panasonic's P905i handset it was bunched in between a slew of other phones NTT DoCoMo was touting, but now that the phone is finally on sale it's getting the spotlight to itself for a little while. In case you missed it, the real stand-out feature on this one is the phone's Viera image processing and 3.5 inch, 854 x 480 screen, which should get put to good use thanks to the ample supply of PMP features including, of course, a 1seg TV tuner. Otherwise you can expect the usual 3G capabilities, along with a 2 megapixel camera, 1GB of built-in memory, and support for the DCMX iD mobile banking service. No word on a price just yet, but you can probably guess if it's in your budget or not.

Look at that, a full screen phone with 3G and a slider. Bet it gets decent battery life too.
Apple should take notes.
Raheem @ Feb 25th 2008 1:58PM
If there was a, "First to Mention Apple Prize," then you my friend would take the cake. The big, annoying cake. :P
Zak @ Feb 25th 2008 2:18PM
Kremit - Apple should take notes on what? Your assumption that it gets good battery life? Have you just missed it the last few dozen times it's been mentioned that battery life is the *exact* reason Apple didn't incorporate 3G into the iPhone? I have an idea, how about you *prove* the P905i gets better battery life than the iPhone before you make snarky anti-Apple comments, mmmkay?

It's like Godwin's Law except it isn't about a man with a narrow mustache and his legion of crazed übersoldiers driving around Europe (and Africa) in infernal machines of doom (lolol get it).
In contemporary times, the narrow mustache has been replaced with a black turtleneck and an amicable stubbly beard and parties on all sides have become crazed partisans surfing around in blogs (and Youtube) in infernal machines of doom.
And no...All these fanboys most definitely do not blend.
In the spirit of the original law's name, I propose it be called Godfail's Law.
So basically: TALK MORE ABOUT APPLE IN EVERY NEWS ITEM THAT COULD SOMEHOW POSSIBLY PERTAIN TO A MARKET SECTOR/BUSINESS PRACTICE/AESTHETIC STYLE THAT APPLE IS, WAS, OR COULD BE INVOLVED IN.
DO IT.
On topic: Sweet phone. Shame it probably won't have an microSDHC card slot or decent battery life. 3G and decent battery life? My Samsung Blackjack has a substantially longer battery life when it is on EDGE and not 3G.
But I digress.

Oh, and since Steve Jobs says battery life is why they didn't put 3G on the phone you blindly believe him? Sucker!
Zak @ Feb 25th 2008 3:39PM
I'm a sucker? Really? Okay, why don't you prove that battery life *wasn't* the reason for not including 3G on the iPhone. And of course by using the word "prove", that means you have to use "facts", not your opinion. Your opinion is irrelevant. If you can't prove it, then you got nothing. You know how the saying goes, put up or shut up. I look forward to seeing your proof.

@zak
There are lots and lots and lots of 3G phones out there with good battery life. If they were able to pull it off, then why not apple?
Zak @ Feb 25th 2008 4:51PM
Define "good". And keep in mind that one of the attractions of the iPhone is a "real" web browser and email client with an unlimited data plan by default. Also keep in mind that the telco companies that support the iPhone (AT&T, O2, etc.) have reported seeing massive spikes in data usage, way *way* above anything they've ever seen before and it's all coming from the iPhones.
Apple has said that in their testing, they found that heavy internet usage on 3G drained too much battery on the iPhone and that's why they decided to wait on 3G until a more energy efficient 3G chip was available. I think it's safe to assume that the other 3G phones you're talking about with "good" battery life aren't using anywhere near as much data on average - otherwise the telco companies would have reported that too.
So I doubt any of the 3G phones out there right now have anything close to "good" battery life with comparable data usage. I'm sure it's fine if they're not using 3G, but if you use 3G nonstop it'll drain your battery like a sieve. It's a well established fact that 3G chips in phones take a lot of power, so Apple's reasoning should be pretty understandable. Assuming you're not an irrational anti-Apple ass monkey, like some of the clowns that post here.

" Otherwise you can expect the usual 3G capabilities "
* sigh! * 3G is usual ...
martin @ Feb 25th 2008 2:04PM

beanspants @ Feb 25th 2008 2:06PM
they apparently used up all the 'pretty' on the screen, the 'ok' on the blah-black body, were out of 'regular ugly', and so had to go with 'double ugly' for that keypad.
PhilxBefore @ Feb 25th 2008 2:29PM
Looks alot like a square PSP in that dock.

I saw the real 905i series last week.
The 854 x 480 screen is really stunning! Frankly speaking, after looking at that, I found myself difficult to migrate to the current iPhone if it is to be release in my place officially.
And, the screen of PSP also looks crappy afterward...
the 5MP digi Cam's quality are far accaptable then expected, and whats more its preinstalled with omg RIDGE RACER!!!!!
How come Nokia Motorola Samsung LG SonyEricsson etc etc cant bring such kind of things to us?!
Poom @ Feb 26th 2008 8:38AM
I want that resolution to become a standard soon... Or maybe the more standard 800x480 the XPERIA uses.
Elliott @ Feb 26th 2008 3:36PM
Why does NTT DoCoMo get such nice phones and features? I was in Japan 6 months ago and was blown away by all the amazing phones they had.
Vervain @ Mar 26th 2008 12:30PM
I own the phone and yes, the features are mind blowing but the 5mp is one of the most disappointing features of all. Mine is the flip version, not the slide one
