Apple's 1.1.4 firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch just hit the wires, courtesy of iTunes 7.6.1.9. Nobody knows what exactly is in store (SDK support, perhaps?), so obviously those jailbreakers out there might want to hold off while the braver souls among us give it a shot. For the record, no SDK has hit Apple Developer Connection yet, so take that for what you will. So far those who've successfully updated haven't seen any changes, but we'll keep you posted. So far the entire official word from Apple on the release seems to be "Bug fixes." Typical.
Update: So far we've tested 1.1.4 on a jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone and a non-jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone, and had zero problems with either, including intact music libraries after the procedure -- your mileage may vary! We went through all of the system settings and can't spot anything new. Multiple sources are claiming ZiPhone works, but it's not fully tested and may be a little wonky at this point, so proceed with caution.
Update 2: Well, ZiPhone claims to have worked, but there aren't any icons for our installed apps, and we can't uninstall or reinstall. Also, it's worth noting that since this is a rather hefty update in terms of file size, and yet added features seem non-existent, our best guess is that this paves the way for an SDK in the coming weeks.

Alright, a firmware update. Oh goody!
No 3G?
Brian, this firmware update added 4G support. Even betta!
I heard a 5 megapixel camera comes with the update.
Actually,it activates the GPS that has been there all along, and deactivates the backdoor triangulation nonsense wannabe location system. With, of course, verified addresses of Starbucks included for the new Apple iMaps mobile.
In other news, a Meteor will crash into Earth in...
Developing...
That's no fun. You posted a blank bulletin saying Developing and quickly fill it in in a mere minute? What was the point of that... trying to be first?
Such is life for the blogger realm.
You already link to them at the bottom of the page, why post it here again?
Hopefully this tiem they have some better phone software rather than supporting only the SDK. Look how long it took them to bring multiple sms messages or lyrics in iTunes, etc...
The phone software isn't new, but there are a few small new features. Someone made a video explaining them already:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fj1lx79wiNc
I did this Rick Astley song in my college talent show. Met a nice girl right after. Still with her and that was four years ago.
BrianB... Didn't you and I mess around after that talent show?...
SFO Kevin,
I had my pet monkey doing backup for me, you was prolly with him.
162 megabytes...
Yep, which means, like with 1.1.3 on the iPod touch...that 1.1.4 has the support for the SDK, but we'll probably need to pay to use it
Apple demands...
*Pinky on side of mouth*
ONE MILLION DOLLARS
/evil laugh
why hasn't there been an article on the new 16gb iphone??? i submitted the link 10 hours ago...
That's old news homie.
yeah... like over a week too late
because there was one weeks ago
I told them about the new ipod photo like a week ago. look at that, no post about it. what the f is up with that?
Come on Engadget....Not only have you not put these peoples' posts, but you haven't told people about the end of the format war
VHS Won!!!! no more betamax!
I can't believe there's no post about it yet....
I wonder if once the SDK comes out we'll have to pay another 20 bucks to use the apps :p
Doubt it. If that's the case, everyone will be walking around with a jailbroken iPhone/Touch. If Apple doesn't treat these apps like widgets, all hell will break loose.
It's official...hackers have already broken 1.1.5.
Bring on Opera 9.5 for iPhone! Woowoooo!
...why? Minus the inability to display Flash, Safari is very much so superior... When I say superior I mean ease of use etc... not a 100 unneeded features...
Dear Safari,
Please add a copy/paste feature.
Safari isn't here right now but leave a message or press "2" to be transfered to Whale Hunt
Description included: "This software update re-locks up your jailbroken 1.1.3 iPhone."
Thanks for the warning Steve, I just nearly clicked update, whew!!
[the update doesn't actually say that, really..]
yay! iBrella and iTeleport.... Exactly what I've been waiting for!
Updating now, lets hope they fix the texting problems and safari randomly quitting.
Hard reset your phone by holding down power button. Ignore "Slide to turn off" and hold it down until it resets. This fixed my safari issues for me. Thanks to whoever posted it, I just found it through a quick google.
I've done that countless times, but it never fixed safari sudden death problem.
Did they use Time Machine?
D'oh, I meant that as a reply to Phil! >_
probably the starbuck crap things that nobody care about
only cool thing starbuck is moving to ATT wifi
correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the starbucks thing already there in the very first release?
yay! this update now allows your Iphone to be used as toilet paper.
Oh boy "This update includes bug fixes and SUPERSEDES all other versions"! In other news, Apple press release tells all current iPhone and/or iPod touch users to throw away their obsolete software hogs.
So, how much is Apple charging the touch owners this time? I would avoid buying the touch with the SDK coming up. They use a different account scheme for it than the iPhone. That means iPhone users will get stuff for free that you have to pay for.
I believe Apple intends to sell apps via iTunes, so the SDK should be a free update.
YES!!
I can finally sync Events from iPhoto instead of strictly Albums!
Thank you, Apple :)
Question: I wanted to buy an 8GB iPhone today and unlock/jailbreak it. I guess if I buy it today I will still get firmware 1.1.3 so there should be now problems using ZiPhone, right?
In case my new iPhone has firmware 1.1.4, do I understand it right that ZiPhone can jailbreak it but not unlock it?
OMG. Didn't you see it Engadget?
The 1.1.4 update includes Installer.
For the benefit of the rest of mankind... I'm updating as I type:
In iTunes, it seems there is a new-ish cover-flow style for the music videos (though I dont know if this is new)
A new driver is installing itself (Apple Recovery (iBoot) USB Driver)
Boy this process sure is taking a while. About 7 minutes in now, still updating iPhone firmware
9 minutes in.. now the phone is restarting.
Update is done.
It appears as if there is absolutely no difference between this version and 1.1.3 (though this is probably going to f*ck up jailbreaking again).
This update is rated a SKIP IT
"This update is rated a SKIP IT"
I appreciate feature additions as much as anyone else, but I also appreciate bug fixes.
So far I don't see any changes in the features of my iPhone, but I think my attitude toward the world around me has improved. Whatever... I'll take it.
Could you take a screenshot showing whether there is Exchange support in 1.1.4? I heard there was, but I don't know if that is just the IMAP Exchange support there already was.
wheres the updates for the ipod classic? so many bugs in that thing, makes me want to sell it.
Mhm, yeah. Mm, uh-huh. Okay. No wait.. You said?
Maybe it won't think I am in Chicago every time I sync -- or was that vista's fault...
Copy and paste comming in 7.8.2!
Oops, I meant coming.
Spell check coming to Engadget next year!
Spell check coming to Firefox soon! ...oh wait it already is
Sure, there might be a lot of people who cracked their phones, but for the rest of us, why not do some reporting and tell us what bugs the firmware has fixed.
I did the update and for the past 30min it says I have no service and will not find a tower :-( That is not a good sign anyone else have this problem?
Reboot your iphone, it should pick up the towers after it loads.
I'm pulling out the M drawer and filing this update in the "Meh!" folder.
I'm sure it's nice for the iPhone users to read about these firmware updates but is there any reason why Engadget feels that it's necessary to post about updates for the iPhone and not other phones? I can't remember ever seeing anything about updates to other popular phones like the N95 for instance.
And isn't this what Engadget Mobile is for?
Judging from your sniveling whiny comment history you hate Engadget. Why ya still here then?
I don't think it was a sniveling comment at all--he has a legitimate question that deserved something other than your uncouth response.
So, to answer your question: I think the reason why you don't typically hear about most mobile phone firmware updates is that they typically don't offer new functionality. Unless it is something like a new Windows Mobile client release (which you do see on Engadget).
Hark, that's a nicely logical reply, but I'm afraid we're both just feeding "Oh no they mentioned Apple!!!" trolls at this point. He's beating on a massacred horse either way.
BTW, I said comment _history_, which if you view, you'll see why I made my point as I did. I agree the above poster is more polite than the typical trolls, but that's neither here nor there.
He has been modded down, so apparently other people see him as a troll as well, but I don't see him that way. He didn't say he hated seeing iPhone or Apple posts, but rather in addition to those he would also like to see similar information given about other phone firmware updates.
I would suggest everyone re-read his post and mod him up. I did.
I think its kinda foul that Apple distributes these updates without giving us a complete breakdown of what is included. Aren't they kinda obliged to do that ?
Umm...no. You don't have to install the updates. Like with any other software, do research before installing...I wait two weeks.
Just noticed that skipping to a specific part of a song or video is now very smooth. Before especially in videos there was a long pause and then the playback resumed. Now the pause is extremely short.
Yahoo Business mail still broke-
Cannot Send Mail
The connection to the outgoing server "(null)" failed.
Have you tried setting your outgoing mail server to cwmx.com? That might fix the problem. Go settings -> mail -> yahoo account -> and edit the outgoing pop info to cwmx.com
You cannot change any server settings when you set up an iPhone "yahoo" account (IMAP). Yahoo Business mail addresses used to work fine thru 1.1.2 and broke along with the 1.1.3 update
Does anyone know where I can download the software without having to go through Apple's servers? These damn school Internet filters are a bitch. (And I'm a boarder, so I'm a bit stuffed)
Seeing as Apple prides itself on its ease of use, you gotta laugh at the endless hoops that punters are forced to jump through just to get the iPhone to work the way they want it to.
wow what sport is that? sounds like a cross between rugby and baksetball. awesome
I'm wondering if the update fixes issues with Yahoo email. About 3 weeks ago my iPhone stopped getting my Yahoo mail. I tried all the recommendations given in the forums (new password, all alphanumeric pw, blahblahblah) and nothing worked. Others had the same issue.
Anyway, maybe this fixed it.
And before anyone asks "Yahoo! Why?" -- I already have (2) Gmail accounts plus my (1) Ymail account which I've had for over 10 years. I don't need any new accounts, I want my Ymail to work!
Sooooo, if any of you have had Ymail issues, did this fix -- fix it?
BTW, yes my phone is a Ziphone jailbreaked (jailbroken, jailbreaked'ed?) v1.1.3 -- orig 1.0.
Don't worry, your Microhoo! account will be using a Passport login soon enuff
I've also had problems with sending Yahoo! mail through the iPhone lately. Messages will appear to send -- "swoosh" sound and all that -- and the message was never sent. And the message isn't in the sent folder. Just vanishes. "Swoosh"
Okay, back to the firmware...
My biggest gripe is that they don't tell you what is included in the update. I mean disk space is precious on my 4GB iPhone so I would like to know if it is worth losing even more to some new update that does "who knows what". Going to have to fleabay this one and get a larger phone as Apple will have claimed nearly 1GB of space just on the OS and updates. THIS STINKS.
You probably know this, but despite the misleading tone of the post here, the update doesn't actually gobble all that space. It's probably more like 10MB extra, as this is around the largest figure I've seen in the past. The image contains the full software and firmware needed for a restore; it's not ~160MB of *extra* software.
The update does add two new buttons to the Safari interface where you can paganate through the open browser pages, there are now "New Page" and "Done" buttons. At least I never noticed them till I updated today.
they have always been there since the dawn of iphone.
lol! that just made my day
Hopefully it fixes the SMS timestamping issue that wasn't fixed by their first fix.

!!!
i have unlocked my iphone with ziphone, and i did the update. the only thing bad that happened was it un-jailbroke it so now i have to do it all over and reinstall all my downloaded apps
worst update ever.
thinking of buying an iphone, dealbreaker for me is that cannot delete single phone entry in the recent call list. instead, must delete entire call list. is there a work around?
jailbreak
less sketchiness?
"mom, i found the perfect phone for me but i'm gonna pass. i can't individually delete from the recent calls list"
If you want to run a second woman, just get a cheap prepay phone.
iPhones. Not deisgned for affairs.
sweet! a swipe and 5 clicks on the home button routes you to sir stevie's brain.
LOOK at the new cinema displays with camera built in!
noooooo i was going to UK to buy one to unlock... dammit!!!
im sure turbosim still works
i'm sure it does, but i'd rather have a 1.1.3 OTB just unlocked...
So far I've noticed two things that might be different (though they could have come about from earlier updates).
1) Webclip names that are to long have ellipses inserted in ("Weather Channel" becomes "Weath...nnel" for instance). I thought before it just truncated the end.
2) When you receive a call from someone and that number is listed under multiple contacts, it now says "Call From X or Y". So, if you have a buddy Bob and have his home phone number in his contact, but you also have his wife Mary and have their home phone under her as well, it will say "Call From Bob or Mary". Before it just told you the name of the first contact (alphabetically) matching the number.
@Kato,
Actually, the second feature you mentioned has been there for a while now. I see both my name and my wife's whenever she calls me from home.
@hortonk
I figured, but since I hadn't gotten a call from a couple in awhile, I hadn't had a chance to test it. Glad they fixed that, though. It's a minor thing.
try out your locate me in google maps it should be more accurate.
My location doesn't work anymore - worked fine with the cellular tower extrapolation, GPS can't find me at all.
try out your locate me in google maps it should be more accurate.
