What's more fun than seeing a highly-anticipated device get the full-on dissection treatment? Upgrading it, of course. Cloudbooker forum member Azazel got a
Cloudbook to play with and is doing just that: ripping apart the laptop piece by piece for you viewing pleasure, while also upgrading the RAM and documenting the process. He's already spotted a way to add Bluetooth internally, and how to open up the laptop without voiding your warranty, but we've still got a long ways to go before we start to see
Eee PC-level hackerdom.

"and how to open up the laptop without voiding your warranty"
WIN!
Flashpoint @ Feb 27th 2008 10:33AM
LOL There's like nothing in there !
I would have made the entire thing with no moving parts and added a small SSD to it. Or at least, high speed SD Card
Zeus.:God @ Feb 27th 2008 10:50AM
Much like your skull! You two are practically brothers!
Flashpoint @ Feb 27th 2008 11:13AM
zeus
Your name implies you have delusions of godhood and your icon is lame.
Zeus.:God @ Feb 27th 2008 11:21AM
They aren't delusions, as I am, in fact, a God.
By the way, you must not play or even like games (that or you're too young to know anything about it) to think my icon is lame. Besides, what really matters is that your reply is lame- and I'm glad we're in agreement that your head is as empty as this Cloudbook, given that you have yet to deny it.
Good day.
LiqwidZero @ Feb 27th 2008 12:55PM
Zeus,
You fail.
Zeus.:God @ Feb 27th 2008 5:35PM
LiqwidZero,
Keep dreamin'. I never fail.
Hung @ Feb 27th 2008 10:14PM
Yeah, Zeus.:God actually fails quite often, but I'll ignore that for now. He's mostly right in this scenario, although the joke was far from great.
It's pretty obvious that Flashpoint knows slim to none about computers and Zeus.:God called him out on it.
@ Flashpoint
Empty? Have you ever seen a laptop with a double-sided motherboard before? R500 or Eee come to mind?
The Cloudbook isn't supposed to compete with the Eee. If it had 4-8 GB flash and still cost $100 more than the Eee, no one would buy it. The HDD is its number one selling point. Furthermore, a high speed SD (C6) is definitely half as fast as a slow HDD (4200 RPM). It's also less reliable and costs more per gigabyte.
There's nothing wrong with moving parts. It's all this stupid-ass marketing telling you that moving parts are the devil. How many laptops don't have SSDs but are still usable. I'm not sure about everyone else, but I've NEVER seen a laptop's HDD fail. Ever.

Every time you link to that "Eee PC-level hackerdom" it makes me want to buy it. A few more links might put me over the edge.
Raheem @ Feb 27th 2008 10:52AM
Yeah I've had an EEE on my desk since November, really haven't done anything with it yet. More links!
kojo87 @ Feb 27th 2008 5:36PM
i've only had my Eee for about 2 weeks but i love it. i put XP Pro on it and it flies. i do want to do a Blue-tooth upgrade but i dont think i have the guts or skill to do so. a wireless mouse without the USB dongle would be sick.
no im gonna go back to trying to install Steam to a 16GB SD card so i can get my ultramobile Portal on!!
Todd @ Feb 27th 2008 10:50AM
"...He's already spotted a way to add Bluetooth internally..."
Shhhhhhh! Dammit don't tell people that, that's a secret. They are hard enough to find in stock, now I will never be able to get one.
Dustin Frazier @ Feb 27th 2008 11:03AM
Show me a laptop that you can't add bluetooth. Simplest mod ever.
James @ Feb 27th 2008 6:59PM
You missed the critical word "internally".
Dustin Frazier @ Feb 27th 2008 10:45PM
Ok, internally. Still simplest mod ever. If you can open the case, you can add Bluetooth. I don't care what laptop it is.
jblock @ Feb 27th 2008 11:01AM
That three minute boot time is the killer for me though. I want to like this thing for the storage space, but it's rough edges are too much.
Ellianth @ Feb 27th 2008 11:08AM
Put your case back on, You filthy FILTHY whore! I just hate seeing young gadgets take their clothes off just to be in news. And how dare you run this story Engadget? This site is becoming more and more like roboporn.net and robotica.org. FOR SHAME!
(/me wonders if those two addresses are real)
Longhorn @ Feb 27th 2008 11:13AM
Yawn.
Deez @ Feb 27th 2008 11:16AM
"a highly-anticipated device"
Thats pushing it
Sauerkraut @ Feb 27th 2008 2:14PM
I was about to type in the same thing. No one cares about this.... (hopefully)
juan mendez @ Feb 27th 2008 12:56PM
I would get it but why? i can buy a eee pc for same price with 4 gigs memory versus this crappy 30 gig hard drive, i mean 30 gig is a over kill, should have made it 2 gig, next thing you know its also going to have an expansion card slot. for my money i rather have a 4 gig ee pc, why would i want 30 gig, i mean sure it will run windows xp and wow and a crap load of videos and a ton of music for the same price as a eee , but a Eee is soo cool for the fan boys
dos @ Feb 27th 2008 2:41PM
hacks on a just released device are not as advanced as hacks on one that is months old film at 11
Syliss @ Feb 27th 2008 4:44PM
OMG the pix are to big for my screen. Damn my 15" laptop...
Luke @ Feb 28th 2008 6:26AM
Cloudbook + Isaiah + SSD = > EEEpc.
Julian Bond @ Feb 28th 2008 9:15AM
Shame about the weird trackpad. It's probably the one thing that makes this worse than Eeepsie.
