Sony's launching mylo labs to keep your COM-2 in the widgets
If you've already dropped $299 on a second-gen mylo COM-2 unit, then Sony has a little treat for you -- while all of you early adopters still poking around on an original mylo probably feel pretty silly right now. Sony is launching the "mylo labs" site for nabbing mylo widgets, and while right now there are just a few Sony-built widgets, Sony will open up the site to developers in March to add their own. Widgets seem to be a natural fit for a device like this, and hey, they're free, so there's really no reason not to love. It's just too bad those gen-one types get left out in the cold.

turn_self_off @ Feb 28th 2008 10:20AM
nope, only wifi...
guerilla779 @ Feb 28th 2008 10:43AM
man they should put a gsm or cdma chip in there........then it'll be a bomb shell.

I'm totally ignorant of the mylo concept. What is it's purpose?
ReggieXuk @ Feb 28th 2008 9:58AM
Sony doesn't like the EEE, but it loves it mylo. * slow clap *

I bought the first Mylo COM-1, thinking that Sony would enhance it's feature set and boy was I wrong!!!
They did like 2-3 firmware upgrades for patching/security and called it done... No new features or functionalities!!! I was anticipating it to be treated like the PSP...
I'm still trying to figure out where Location Free support is, on this thing (COM-2) cause that the only reason that would make me buy it!
The Mylo is basically a VoIP/IM phone with alot of multimedia/web browsing features, except it features neither a GSM or CDMA radio. Imagine the Mylo as the little brother to the PSP, cept with a keyboard.
-The Mylo and PSP have a web browser.
-The Mylo and PSP have Skype.
-The Mylo and PSP both to movies/music/photos.
-The Mylo and PSP can both do RSS to a certain extent.
It uses Wifi, and thus a Wifi access point is required for usage.
It's primarily for kids and teens, and since kids and teens wouldn't be as apt to want a data contract with a cellphone provider, they don't add cell capabilities to it.
Plus, it's not made by Sony Ericsson, but by Sony. Big Difference! Sony and Sony Ericsson are 2 different companies... (Don't Ask!)

cant wait for sony to just mash the mylo2 together with a psp, drop the umd, and add cell phone capabilities. and through in a 16 or 32gb memstick pro dou for fun. ultimate iphone/anything killer? i say yes

Asking Sony to drop the UMD in the PSP is like asking Nintendo to drop the cartridge slot in the DS. How are they going to sell games for the PSP? If anything, the UMD should be made more useful, like an offering of $5 movies or CDs on them or something.

"How are they going to sell games for the PSP?"
Oh I don't know, the Playstation Store ? Where have you been, people have been clamoring for a UMD-less HD/Flash based PSP for quite some time.
sevendegrees @ Feb 28th 2008 9:39PM
its called a rom, yuo can dl them. cuts overhead, etc, etc... or sell say 2gb memstick, with 1 or2 roms preloeaded

Brings me back to my childhood when the new 19200 baud modem I got required a new 16550 uart, because the old 8250 uart didn't really cut it speedwise.
So with a new ISA (or was it as new as pci) card I got COM1 to 4. I felt like I had endless expansion capabilities with that.
Good times good times (as long as I had no IRQ conflicts)
Onetruebill @ Feb 28th 2008 12:10PM
Nothing personal but you are too young.
Reading that made me want to dig out my old 1200 baud external modem and whack you with it. (it was about a 4 pounder) I could hold it by the heavy duty power cord and swing it like internet nunchucks. (wii not included)

True Sony Style (just like Apple) - here's some widgets/webapps for you to use; they are basically little snippets of javascript and they don't have acess to any low level hardware.
Meanwhile Nokia gives full access to the hardware on their N800 and N810.
Sony blows if you ask me.
scott @ Feb 28th 2008 7:30PM
nope, no one asked.
D MASTER @ Feb 28th 2008 12:04PM
I disagree, if I was a mylo 2 user i'd be pretty stoked right now.
Jimmy Jones @ Feb 28th 2008 12:37PM
I woulda shell out $299 but it doens't do phony...so i'll save my benjamins...
Any here got a recommendation for a good MP3 / PMP device to buy rightnow?
Slim and sleek is not a necessity ...dont even think about recommending me that 2.5 inch Creative Zen with 8/16GB capacity...my music library is way more than that.
Binaryfiend @ Feb 28th 2008 12:52PM
I have a Mylo Com-2, I love it and I'm not a kid. I'm 31. And yes this news does excite me. I'm a web/interface designer so should be pretty easy for me to create my own widgets. I have a Nokia 770 too but I'm not a programmer per se so I couldn't really make my own complete programs. This is more my style.
Now I just have to wait for a little more documentation.

Typical Sony support- they support a device until a new version comes out and expect the consumers to upgrade if they want the newest features (like with their PSP and eBook readers)
