Thus far, the only intelligent solution I've seen for a GPS mount in a car is to create a dock type alcove which allows the unit to be plugged/removed with no hassle. No connection/disconnection of wires necessary and the dock connector gives the device a full charge - just like an ipod dock. The car's radio controls are designed to interface with whatever device is in the dock.
