If you happen to own an iPhone, and you
happen to have updated to the 1.1.4 firmware, you can now easily jailbreak, activate, and unlock your phone with a couple of simple solutions. As you may have heard, iNdependence 1.4 beta 5 is out, which will do all sorts of non-Apple approved things to your device from OS X, though if you're looking for the ultimate cross-platform solution, you probably can't do better than the latest version Zibri's all-in-one package,
Ziphone 2.5. Both apps make it about a million times easier than this was a few weeks ago, though we've seen video of a new solution -- jailbreaking
directly from iTunes -- that could make this process even simpler (though considerably more illegal). Check that out after the break and get a glimpse of your deviant future.

How do you change your Name and Avatar on Engadget?
I see people all the time with a custom avatar and I cant figure out how to change mine.
Help!!
insertAlias @ Feb 29th 2008 2:10PM
Come back to this post and click your name.
It will take you to another page. On the top right side, there should be a section that says "Are you _name_? If so, click here to login." Look in the comment confirmation email for the password.
Enjoy.
The General @ Feb 29th 2008 2:13PM
Click on your name just above your comment, then on the left it will say "Are you engadget? If So, Login Here." click on that. Now you'll see a round, green button that says "Push to close." .... push it!
makishima @ Feb 29th 2008 2:19PM
@The General Wow. Best Jurassic Park reference ever. +1 for you sir
BEN! @ Feb 29th 2008 3:24PM
I try that but is says the password is incorrect. I try the same password I use to leave comments! What gives?
Casper42 @ Feb 29th 2008 2:49PM
Awesome - Thank you both for your help. Of course I realized i don't have my avatar file here at work, so I will have to go dig it up off another forum and then come back and update it later.
Along those lines, is there a primary login page where I can login before browsing engadget and then not have to login at the bottom of the comments pages?
-Casper42
insertAlias @ Feb 29th 2008 3:13PM
Nope, they don't have persistent logins yet. Would be nice, though.
Jason @ Feb 29th 2008 3:23PM
Testing Avatar... (or creating) ignore post
Reid @ Feb 29th 2008 3:36PM
Don't feel bad, I find it confusing as hell, too. It took me forever to figure out, mostly because I never tried that hard. I'd glance around the page, not see anything interesting, give up, and then think about it again a few months later. Wash, rinse, repeat.
Also when I ended up uploading my pic I think I had problems in both Safari and Firefox. Meh.
bondsbw @ Feb 29th 2008 2:07PM
Why would jailbreaking using iTunes be considered "more illegal"? Either jailbreaking is illegal or not, so I think.
blinkcowz182 @ Feb 29th 2008 3:03PM
Because this "jailbreaking" through itunes is actually restoring a custom firmware. You know how the PSP has custom firmwares that are Sony's FW hacked to do lots of other great things? Coming to an iPhone near you!
phanbouy @ Feb 29th 2008 4:48PM
"I love this site and its disheartening to see BS posts stacking up more and more"
Says the hypocrite hijacking the thread.
Look whiny bitch (your words), if you want to list all of the gadgets that are getting passed over, then fine. You have no logic only FUD.
But hey, I'll bet you you'd be the first one to pounce all over someone on a Zune post for saying the same things you are here... shit you'd be calling for a lynching. But tell ya what, next time your article on the ZunePhone gets passed over, _then_ you can throw a fit.
Meanwhile, why don't you try throwing your fanboy energies into something useful like getting your idols to make something worth posting about instead of trying to shut up people who want to discuss Apple products?
The only thing worse than a troll is a pretentious troll with a "cause". Someone get me the barf bag.
phanbouy @ Feb 29th 2008 4:49PM
grr broken comments. this post was directed at sick transit

Don @ Feb 29th 2008 2:17PM

pathogen @ Feb 29th 2008 2:21PM
Are you on the QQ 's payroll?
trumpton @ Feb 29th 2008 2:19PM
Engadget love this whole jailbreak farrago as it gives them the excuse to keep on and on and on and on posting more stories about - it's the gift that keeps on giving!
Imagine if there was a Microsoft/Phone phone where users were forced to constantly battle with The Man and piddle about with dodgy firmware updates just to get the phone to work like a proper smartphone - Engadget would make a few sneery comments and then ignore it.
But when it comes to Apple, we've got to hear every pointless scrap of non news every day, so we get to thrill to vacuous fluff like: "the Apple store is down" (again).
(waits for fanboys to turn feral)
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 29th 2008 2:32PM
While this particular post doesn't necessarily annoy me as it is somewhat relevant, I have to agree. I often think I accidentally clicked on TUAW when visiting Engadget...
Tom B @ Feb 29th 2008 2:39PM
So what if Engadget editors are closet fanboys? Engadget publishes what it wants to, and it's up to you to take it or leave it... not whine when they post things you don't care about. Everyone who whines about this crap has it backwards... you come here to read what they have to say, you don't come here because they post what you want to read.
Joshua Topolsky @ Feb 29th 2008 2:43PM
@ trumpton
I don't understand your logic here. If Microsoft were to release a similar device (say, a Zunephone), you can be sure our coverage would be just as intense.
Perhaps the issue is a lack of interesting and/or innovative consumer devices coming from other companies. Believe me when I tell you we wait eagerly to swarm on the newest gadgets, regardless of who makes them.
Please remember there are plenty of readers who also identify us as Microsoft fanboys, Sony fanboys, Nintendo fanboys, etc.
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 29th 2008 2:58PM
Damn reply system...
Tom b >> First off, debate means traffic, lets not pretend they don't post like this for only one reason. Secondly, I can piss and moan all day long as long as I want. Many have said way worse and still have not been banned or had posts deleted. And finally, we are the ones who made Engadget popular by visiting it (Good articles = Traffic, praise, etc.), if they piss us off, we will say "f@#$ you" and they will become the next Slashdot.
You've been a member for less than 2 months, Have a Coke and a Smile and kindly STFU.
caleb @ Feb 29th 2008 3:29PM
If you acknowledge that "debate equals traffic" and it's a topic you would like to see less of, then why are you contributing to the debate/traffic when its against your interests?
caleb @ Feb 29th 2008 3:35PM
Also, as a side note, I would never attack someone based on their join date, but I just noticed you joined 9 days before Tom B. Why would you even go there?
phanbouy @ Feb 29th 2008 3:36PM
@SIC TR4NSIT: seniority =/= extra whining privileges

Don said "I suggest a new domain... engadgetapple.com"
Wow Don I've never heard that one before. Not only is that shockingly clever but it's satirical burning truth. You'll go far as an internet anti-Apple crusader. Keep up the righteous fight.
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 29th 2008 4:35PM
Not to compare this site to this phrases actual representation but "Dissent is the truest form of patriotism"... No im not saying I like Engadget to that level, but im sure youll get what I mean. I bitch because I care. I love this site and its disheartening to see BS posts stacking up more and more. There are literally no worthy alternatives to this site, but they are going downhill in many peoples opinion. If the library you went to started what many felt was promoting republicans and dissing democrats, and you were a democrat, You would still go there, but you would be upset that they are showing favor when you felt they should be unbias. You would most likely fill out a comment card expressing your distaste. Our tax dollars pay for our libraries, and our Ad clicks pay for Engadget. And yeah, I started posting well over a year ago, not 2008, and I brought it up to help my point that Ive been comming here for a long time as have many others, and while many have no opinion on the new slant, many do. Its a public entity, and the consumer ultimately controlls it.
phanbouy @ Feb 29th 2008 5:22PM
wow, you've been here a _whole_ year? that's amazing, sick transit! anyway, you're not a patriot, you're a troll-- your whole history is one big flame fest. see my other reply which got redirected above.

For anyone who missed it here it goes the translation:

Someone call the wahhhhhhhhhhmbulance for SIC TROLL
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 29th 2008 5:40PM

"Imagine if there was a Microsoft/Phone phone where users were forced to constantly battle with The Man and piddle about with dodgy firmware updates just to get the phone to work like a proper smartphone."
Sounds like you're describing the experience of owning a Windows Mobile phone and fiddling around with "cooked" ROMs.
Oh irony, how I love thee.
phanbouy @ Feb 29th 2008 5:45PM
Give up, you've been pwned. You already dug your hole. You outed yourself as a troll who got (still gets?) beat up in high school way too much when I routed you on your complete gibberish non-logic.
p.s. i have the name i do because i actually have a sense of humor and believe people can like what they want without being attacked by others for it. it's an _ironic_ name, halfwit hypocrite whiny bitch loser. all you do is attack others and expect to be immune? fuck, did you have to study to become such a raving douche bag?
SIC TR4NSIT @ Feb 29th 2008 6:14PM
phanbouy >> You dont even have 1 constructive post in all of your rambling incoherent posts. Grow the hell up. Your like those kids on XBL that follow people from map to map refusing to leave repeating phrases like "Make me" and "I can do what I want" I think we all know who the troll really is. After this I'm done with you, I got sucked into arguing with a troll.
phanbouy @ Feb 29th 2008 6:31PM
Actually, I've been quite constructive. I outed a troll (and a sic one at that). I busted your FUD. I'm getting a good chuckle out of your emotional meltdown though, troll. You've earned it.
But I see you're digging your hole even deeper, saying it's *my* fail for refusing to become some internet scumbag's yes-man? More gibberish from the desperate hater.
btw, i'm calling your parents.. back to military academy for you, spoiled princess!

Does myfaves work on the iphone? Also what data plan do people use on t-mobile. T-zones?
Don @ Feb 29th 2008 2:19PM
@Sean,
Configure your myfaves online and then you don't even have to use the myfave app to dial your numbers. Myfaves isn't really device dependant.
Sean @ Feb 29th 2008 2:36PM
@Don,
Thanks for the reply

the 5.99 internet will work, and yes, myfaves will still work as it is not phone dependent as Don said.
