iriver E100 hits Europe
iriver unveiled a whole bunch of hotness at this year's CES, so you'll have to pick your next player from them wisely... lest you end up buying the whole lot. That said, we're not sure the E100 would be our first choice, but it's certainly no slouch in the looks or specs departments, and it's hitting the market well before most of those fancier players. There's a 2.4-inch QVGA display, built-in stereo speakers and a microSD slot to supplement the included memory. Audio codec support includes FLAC, MP3, WMA, ASF and OGG, while you can manage MPEG-4, WMV9 and XVID for video. There's also a mic, FM radio and line-in for acquiring audio. The E100 is available now, with prices starting at €79.00 ($119 US) for a 2GB player, and ramping on up to €129.00 ($194 US) for the 8GB.

Oh yeah, another apple fanboy. I guess everything the ipod lacks is nothing to moan about, but praise steve jobs for instead?
I wish people generally werent such stupid sheep.

Methinks he's being sarcastic... At least he ought to be. I loved my old iRiver MP3CD player.

Someone in iRiver's marketing team: "Let's abandon our awesome design and adopt Zune's" Team leader: "Good idea."
turn_self_off @ Feb 29th 2008 9:18AM

Wwhat @ Feb 29th 2008 9:35AM

holycow @ Feb 29th 2008 12:10PM
looks a bit more like a SE K750 (without the keys)
helloUser @ Feb 29th 2008 9:17AM
These look so sleek! Much better than ipods. Also, aren't these supposed to be available in 16gb? I hope theres a review of these up soon, I want one.
turn_self_off @ Feb 29th 2008 9:25AM
grab the 8GB version, a 8GB SD and you have 16GB ;)
and the natively supported formats are much better then what any pod can do. flac, ogg and divx anyone?
im sure apple would have gone fairplay wrapped aac only if they could have gotten away with it...
Wwhat @ Feb 29th 2008 9:39AM
Does it really do xvid natively? so often they give you BS and it turns out you have to convert with an included application, all the lies in the world, sigh, you can't tell what's true anymore.

I have an old 40gb iRiver that has been faithful for many years and I have been extremely happy with it. What disappoints me is that iRiver no longer even tries to make large capacity mp3 players. I would love iRiver to release like a 160gb video/mp3 player with a color screen...
Ganesh Kumar @ Feb 29th 2008 7:37PM
I think they will at the end of this year. It's called AMOLE or something like that. It came out during CES this year and can handle videos and music with 160 gb capacity.
Shadowise @ Feb 29th 2008 9:37AM
I say this every time iRiver releases something. Give me a decent HDD based player to replace my iHP-120. Said iHP-120 has survived being dropped in a puddle, dropped down the stairs, is missing half it's screws and has a broken play button, yet it still holds a full charge on it's 5 year old battery.
Gray @ Mar 2nd 2008 5:48PM
There's little reason to replace the H120, or the entire H1x0 series actually, as they do have a bright future ahead of them IMO.
Coloured screens aside (which is unnecessary when your player is purely based for music listening), the H1x0 family have both Digital Out and Optical Out, which given them quite a varied option when it comes to amping.
Using the H1x0's Digital out to an external amp, bypassing the H1x0's own internal headphone amp, yield in more often than not a cleaner sound signal.
Going to the extremes would be using the optical out of the player to an external DAC and then an external amp before the headphones (e.g H1x0 -> Headroom MicroDAC or iBasso D1 -> LISA III -> Ultimate Ears TripleFi for example). Its no understatement when one can call this combination to be 'The best sounding portable set-up in the portable audio world', with the RWA iMods being its equal.
With regard to the HDD's in the H1x0 family, they're replaceable, especially when Toshiba has only just recently released an 80GB HDD compatible with the H1x0 family.
To add on to that, with the release of 32GB Compact Flash cards, mods out there are available to allow one to mod the H1x0 family to become large capacity Flash based players, so the user need not fear about moving parts on the player.
The battery on the H1x0 is also user replaceable. Cameron Sino has released a 2200mAh battery (an improvement over the original 1300mAh battery that runs 14-16 hours) that brings the battery life of the player well over 20 hours (And with Flash memory mod, even longer. 40 hours is a safe estimate).
Lastly, the H1x0 family can bo Rockboxed as well, giving the user far more flexibility that any default firmwares out there (Cowon firmwares are a no-go IMO. Their EQs are OK, but their other sound enhancement options are just... Bleh).

I love the great, Open codec support in this player, but it definitely need a lot More Space in it before it's worth anything special to me. Then I can throw away my iPod with Rocketbox on it, and get something like this!

Oooo Cowon step your game up!! No im kidding. I've never owned an iRiver player. Anyone know how iRiver devices compare to Cowon's in the SQ department?
Mark L. @ Feb 29th 2008 4:24PM
iriver seems to have taken a step back to their old iRiver designs that almost bankrupted them. I'm still waiting for them to come out with 16GB of flash. FLAC is a great addition but 2GB-8GB just seems too small for it.

That's why you supplement that with the included microSD slot.
tekdroid @ Feb 29th 2008 5:20PM
did somebody say FLAC?
http://flac.sourceforge.net
And removable microSD?
Oooh.
Interest building.

I want to order one by now. A lot of people only focus on the storage only! This player has features surpass other units.
The 8GB version is now selling for $215, the price is affordable

Whoa, stunning!
In Korea, now it's available at 88,000 KRW(88.21 USD) for 2GB and 148,000 KRW(148.39 USD) for 8GB.
I think it's pretty reasonable price. Seems like Microsoft's Zune... Anyhow looks cool!
bostanu @ Apr 4th 2008 2:37PM
It's great m4 player, it's cheap, and there's no big differences than ipod, only the company prestige
