iPod nano coming in purple? Probably not.
We've gotten a tip that there could be a new iPod nano color on the way -- purple to be exact -- due to a Circuit City circular ad distributed in Minneapolis this weekend. As far as exciting or even remotely interesting rumors go, this one falls about one space after dead last, and is most likely some kind of funkdafied CMYK mishap, or worse yet -- the most boring Photoshop job in the world. Still, for all you serious iPod aficionados who simply must have the latest shade, perhaps your player will soon be awash in Grimace-colored tones that only the Hamburgler and Prince could truly love.
Update: Well you can rule out printing errors, thanks to tipsters Jack and Joe [but not necessarily photoshops, thanks to Eliav]. Check it out after the break -- you can make the call for yourself, For now we're placing this one back on the table.

Saw the samething in my sunday ads. Pretty ugly in my opinion, but nontheless, some like it
its a fake, just looked on apple's website and saw this pic.....the "purple" ipod is really the pink one
My 12-year old would - her favorite color is purple.
Tastes vary by gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, culture, and so forth. Is that difficult to comprehend?
@Ray
The pink one was more for valentines day, they weren't expected to keep it, so it is possible that they are replacing them with purple ones.
News update:
The color version will come in the triangle shape and will first be sold in San Francisco.
does anyone really care?
Unfortunately, yes, some do.
You kiddin, this is big news!
Dude, story of the year right here. Come on now! How could you NOT care that the iPod is now available in purple! I can't believe my damn eyes it's so amazing!
Not really. I honestly don't feel that colour is all that important, especially when practically no one is ever going to see the iPod that I own as it perpetually resides in a coat pocket or protective pouch.
Apple releases new products - that's news. There are rumors of new apple releases - that's news. Apple releases new firmware revisions for any of its products - that's somehow news too. Apple teams with RED, introducing a new color (but for a good cause) - I will grudgingly accept that is newsworthy.
There is an unofficial rumor of Apple introduces a random new color for a single one of its products - this is NOT news! Sorry, this belongs nowhere near the front page of Engadget. It just doesn't.
You know, stories all start at the top of the front page of Engadget? And you know, stories are listed in chronological order? And you know, you can skip a story you don't like?
QUIET! Or we won't hear the sound of Steve Jobs' farts.
Interestingly, this same "error" exists on the circuitcity.com weekly ad.
I'll pass. Maybe I should spray paint one dark gray... yes, flat dark gray is very sexy. It may make the nano look less hideous than it already is :)
i think if i was in charge of making sunday ads for circuit city or something i'd make subtle changes in photoshop just to watch all the tech blogs go crazy with rumors.
I think it all has to do with ink issues in printing. That is not supposed to be purple. Does anything ever look good in the flyer's that come in newspapers?
@Jay
I thought the same thing. Maybe if someone looked up the ad online we'd get a good idea of what the "true" color is.
I can't wait for the Iphone Nano, that would be great. http://www.whatisgoingonblog.com
you my friend are very stupid for saying a very stupid rumor and adding your stupid link...um...stupidly =)
what's with all the ", blog"s on your page? it's pretty irritating.
Yeh, this news ranks right along with the Vista price drop news.
Now even uglier!
at least it's small. less to look at
Purple...
Minneapolis...
The artist formerly known as Prince...
It's so obvious.
He's back to being Prince again. But shrewd insight, nonetheless.
This is exactly why I'm all over it.
Why is this news? I am close to quitting Engadget. Here is why: While I am an Apple user, this blog often bashes 3rd party PMPs and other devices (before every reviewing them), most of which do more than Apple's offerings and with less 'garden wall' like restrictions. And yet, here, you make a story out of a possible new colour theme for a fairly mediocre device. And even if it wasn't mediocre, why is this even news? Remember Engadget, it is quality that counts, not quantity. So choose your news with care. Else an ad banner clicking reader is going to go elsewhere for his hot machinery news.
I myself am really tired of stupid people saying " ZOMG!!!111 ANoThER APPLE sturY. Go TO HeLL EnGaDgEt!!!!" Give em' a break. It's the weekend, you can't get much news, some people actually find this interesting even though I don't, and one thing a gadget blog should always post are stupid rumors that turn out to be stupid or amazing. Thats a main thing for good gadget blogs. If you read a gadget blog with no stupid rumors or atleast rumors, label it with the seal of "EPIC FAIL"
So quit. I doubt they'll miss you.
Cubswillwin is right twice in one day? wow. you're on fire.
WOW! This is definitely going to make me buy an iPod Nano now! It's so much sexier in purple than one would think. This was definitely worth a news post. I could maybe see this making a headline on an iPod fansite, but not on a tech site. Wait, I guess Engadget is an iPod fansite. Oops.
See, all you really have to do if you don't care for the article is FUCK OFF, avoid it, do not post on it. It seems so hard a concept to grasp, but keep at it, and one day you'll find a way and succeed - I know you have it in you!
Fuck the haters.
you call this news ?!?!?! Im getting over theses mac fanboys
printing error. look at the beck album cover.
He's right, you know.
Apple's colors for the nano currently consist of pink, silver, blue, red, green, and black, so the question is more one of "Why are the pink and red missing?" The product(RED) stuff is very popular (at least with my ultra-liberal ultra-trendy friends), and the pink was introduced for a reason. Also, this appears on the circuitcity.com ad, so I'm more aiming for a screw-up in making the ad, rather than a printing error or a new iPod. Who knows, and honestly, who cares.
It's probably the Pink Nano, with bad coloring, guys...
No, its real. I confirmed with a friend that works at Circuit City - The iPod line will get a "PURPLE" coloring to it for Easter. Check circuitcity.com's ads - No iPod Nano in Miami's publishings, but definately the Shuffle - in PURPLE -
http://circuitcity.shoplocal.com/circuitcity/Default.aspx?action=browsepagesingle&storeid=2396996&rapid=517086&pagenumber=20
the shuffle has been purple since the color refresh about 6 months ago noob
lol you got owned.
http://Ddot.justgotowned.com/
According to the CCity, it is a misprint. It is supposed to be Pink but the color was messed up on it. There are corrections out in the stores already.
It's a REAL COLOR. It's the exact same color on Apple's web site. It's not CMYK error or Photoshop touchup.
iPod Shuffle - Purple
http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/features.html
You can buy the Purple iPod Shuffle now. Estimated Ship: Within 24 hours according to store.Apple.com
When you add the "iPod Shuffle" to the shopping cart, it says:
iPod shuffle, 1GB - Purple
Part Number: MB233LL/A
THE SHUFFLE HAS BEEN AVAILABLE IN PURPLE FOR OVER 6 MONTHS!
I like to think that this story was a printing error on Engadget. Alas, that's unlikely. I think I would have just gone with observing the Sabbath and written today off as a slow news day.
The Web ID for this is in the bottom left corner of the image, and if u check it on their website, it comes up as the PINK nano. End of story.
Purple sux - Karim Baz
Looks BLUE to me.
HAHAHAHAHAHHAAHA.
That is all.
Well, the Vs.'s part looks Purple.
But usually printed stuff looks a bit different then it is in real life, so i figured it was printed a bit darker than the original which would make it look purple if it was originally blue.
i live on long island.
i noticed the same thing in the circuit city flyer that came in newsday also. i doubt this means anything, unless the flyers arent all produced in one location..
There's a purple shuffle so it would make sense.
AH! I already own a Nano in green. I always thought the purple was nice and they needed to bring it to the Nano!
apple really hates colorwarepc.com if this is true.
Comment threads here are starting to get as bad as Joystiq.
amen
Yea another IPUD. IFone, IPUD Shuffle, Ipud Nano, Ipud Touch-Myself. Wow very slow news day at engadget. I'm sure the ISheep will be lining up in droves to get it.. I'm sure as soon as Steve rules the world I'll end up in Ichains and Ishackles. All hail the Igod..
It is supposed to be the red nano.
the only store that sells the red nano is apple it's self
I live in the Twin Cities and looked this ad up online on the circuitcity.com site and found this picture.
http://akimages.crossmediaservices.com/dyn_rppi/592.0.90.0/circuitcity/large/080302_20_yh6k7.jpg
so im positive its not a misprint
OMG OMG A NEW COLOR, OMG OMG OMG, I GOTTA GET ONE, OMG!!! OMG!!!! GOTTA COLLECT THEM ALL OMG OMG!!!
maybe its for the minnesota vikings.. their colors are purple
maybe its for the minnesota vikings.. their colors are purple
WHOA WOW, HOLY! it's Purple... Finally
jeez who cares....?
I'll take CMYK error for 500
Don't worry haters, this article will be gone before you know it. Calm your arses down.
(in the tune of Beethoven's fifth) "gay gay gay gay..."
You may not intend to, but you sure do sound like a bigot.
"...gay gay gay gay..."
I would like to quickly note that on top of that page, there are boths ads for the Creative Zen Stone and iPod shuffle...two directly competing product lines...both are 1GB...but one is $30...the other is $80.
/troll
The Shuffle is now $49 for the 1 Gig and $69 for the new 2 Gig
And good luck getting the songs in my music collection that are from iTunes to work on a Zen Stone. At least with an iPod I get that assurance and can keep up with my music on my Mac/iPod/TV. Zen Stone would be useless for me. I also get AAC encoding and audiobooks that bookmark properly on my portable device.
Oh, yeah... And have fun being condescended to when talking to scripted tech support in India when your Zen Stone acts up.
Oh, yeah, and the 1GB shuffle is $39 if you buy it refurb'd from the Apple Store.
We're talking about new here. Keep up.
I'm still waiting on the Blue Zune at Target. Another Minneapolis mistake.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/11/blue-zune-leaked-via-target-ad/
It's funny because the Zune article was so damn negative, while the Nano article is not. The Nano is hideous enough WITHOUT purple.
So true. It's pretty hard to get that through some people's thick skulls around here. It seems that no matter what Apple does to their iPod lineup, people will salivate over them. They could make an iPod that looks like my grandmother's flabby arms and people would go nuts over it.
Go ahead and rip on me you Apple lovers you.
That's the color of my Shuffle. I like.
i noticed this this morning at work and pointed it out to a couple of my coworkeds but in our magazine the blue and the silver were not the right color and mint look super green..
Bad printing of this image, that is all
http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/gallery/index10.html
If you look at the ad online using flash, and use the "magnifier feature", you can ALMOST make out the product numbers along the bottom.
Now, go to apples website and you'll see that none of the product numbers for current ipods match up with what is on that ad (ie: you can see well enough to tell that the numbers aren't the same).
Hence, this is probably legit.
`Better detective work than mine. Kudos.
wow...I can't believe there are 50+ comments on an article about a color of an iPod within an hour of its posting. And yet, I can believe it...because it's Apple. OMG it has something to do with a product with "i" in the name!! Let's all go make a huge deal about nothing at all!! (and yes, I realize the irony of this post)
No. It's not real. As pointed out it is a bad color proof of the original stock image provided by apple. http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/gallery/index10.html
Notice in the ad, the silver one looks bluish-silver... They added a little extra blue to the image, thus pink becomes purple.
Does NOBODY here understand how colors mix and have the basic observation skills to see the extra blue in the silver iPod nano and the formerly white backgrounds on the screens?
Oops. My own observation skills eluded me. The image I like has the red one and the ad doesn't.
Hmm.. It's still too much blue in the silver one.
i saw the same thing here in atl. i was suprised to see such an ugly color, but hey i guess some people like it.
I want an orange one. Then i want to break it.
Man, I could kill myself... I already have one in green, but I love that purple more than life itself. Maybe I'll call the crisis hotline and ask them what I should do.
I'm actually now contemplating getting a nano.
I'll wait until purple hits for real, and if it doesn't, well, then I won't even worry about it.
Grey, red, purple... it doesn't matter. The iPod is simply unnecessary: http://lowtechtimes.com/2008/01/08/the-unnecessary-ipod-or-why-i-do-not-own-an-ipod/
Not photoshopped- It is definitely purple in my ad (I live in the Minneapolis area). As to if this is a misprint, I do not know.
Just a heads up...
Circuit City has officially released an ad correction stating that the circular has a misprint and the pink iPod is mistakenly shown with purple tint. Ad corrections have been issued to stores, and there is an official disclaimer at circuitcity.com
Wow. This is obviously edited. Look at the MJB album on the purple iPod, it's Grey-ish.
Now, look at the one on Apple.com/iPodnano....Look, a pink iPod with the same album art on it...and the color in the album is more colorful!
its the prince edition
Not that it isn't obvious (as pointed out by other), but here's the correction I saw in a Circuit City: http://flickr.com/photos/tonyskyday/2310983887/
I posted this to my blog on Sunday of this week. I took the picture. Look at the pings.. http://theconnectionpodcast.com/2008/03/02/purple-ipod-nano/
If you don't find this news worthy, and are going to subsequently hate Engadget for posting it then don't look at it.
Sort of like violent games and "controversial" films. If you don't like it, don't pay attention.
