Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 delayed until next year? We think (hope) not
A table of release dates dug up on Sony Ericsson's own site suggests something powerfully depressing, which is that the XPERIA X1 has been pushed all the way out to February 10, 2009 (notice that the date is in European format -- we'd just give up now if it were actually October 2, 2009). While the presence of the page on the company's very own domain is pretty damning evidence, we're still holding out hope that it's a typo or an oversight; late Q2 of '08 was mentioned at MWC, and we really don't see how it's possible to push out a phone nearly three-quarters of a year just weeks after its initial announcement. Please tell us we're right on this one, Sony Ericsson. Please.

it says February 10th, Not October 2nd. Look at the other dates to see how they set it up Day/Month/Year
Oh yeah!!! Engadget, change it to February!
Thank you man!
But having you saying that, it still seems like a hard kick on the nuts for me and others who are anticipating the X1.
Did you actually read the post?
Chris
lol, If this was the case, this would be the funniest thing Sony have ever done to screw up its fans! But I bit this is all just an internal numbering code thingy and the X1 will be out as soon as we can expect; the date seems like a "Not" joke. :)
this would be perfect for me because thats exactly when my contract expires.
SAD DAY!!! With almost all delays, I'm pretty patient, as I can understand that delays only mean a better product as more time is spent on it...
but with phones, my patience is very thin :( Just when I thought the w960i was the ultimate cellphone to have for the next 3-4 years, this phone comes out...and now its delayed :( Please Sony, I hope this isn't really delayed and its some type of typo or something
Anyone else think this is just the release date for EUROPE? And the US will still get theres in time?
@ NineT9: Check out the link Engadget has provided, it includes all release dates for nearly every country. http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/common/handyinfo?cc=us&lc=en&sortorder=0
WOW! Thanks for the link! Didn't see that
Wouldnt make sense when biggest market for SE is europe and wouldnt they be same phone anyways? Aye hopefully it's just typo.
This device is the next best thing now! Every day wasted is a day closer to yesterday's news!
Great. I guess I'll be using my two tin cans over the next year.
my wallet may have just dodged a bullet.
but i still hope it's released soon.
It will be soon. There have been videos of a working prototype, which looks nigh on perfect apart from a few lags. They don't need a year to sort out the firmware, and they hardware spec is confirmed already.
Moreover, SE will not delay the phone by a year, because, especially with phones, it is v.likely to be "outdated" by feb 2009.
I really hope that is a typo. The x1 is my next phone. Please don't screw me Sony.
Yeah, I was going to get that phone for a friend. Pity if ti is delayed.
I agree. If this thing is released in the next few months it will be the first phone I fork out money for rather than just getting on contract.
If it is delayed until next year (which I doubt - people on other forums have questioned the reliability of this information, even if it does appear on an internal site) I would expect it to be old tech by then.
Can I be your friend?
my girlfriend is going to be mighty disappointed
i told her to hold out and see what kind of phones come out with the android platform. hopefully there will be a phone that can compete with the x1 and iphone
Anything can compete with an iPhone, as long as it has a nice screen and plays movies and music.
@Jesse
I hate all the stupid uber-geek "Im coolz cuz I hate aPPLE" fanboys on this site. You are worse than the Apple zealots. You are a damn moron if you think the iPhone is just a nice screen and an mp3 player or "all show and no go". The iPhone has one of the most powerful ARM processors and graphics chips in any available smartphone, at least in America, and it runs OSX for god sakes. You can install a BSD subsystem and have all the *nix utils right at hand. Just wait till the SDK is out for awhile and all the powerful apps devs will be making. Nothing will compare until Android matures and gets some kick-a hardware.
Given Sony Ericsson's track record on smartphones, I'm not surprised.
I don't know why they'd 'Coming Soon' a full year before release. SE does announce ahead of time but that's a long way ahead.
Please come to me!!!!!!! I'll die without this phone!!!!!!
Hope it gets released sometimes october to dec this year
If this phone is delayed CUBSWILLLOSE
the xperia curse, sucessor of the billy goat.
D'oh! That was my next phone
This is my next phone also. I have a Cingular 8525 and even though it has speed issues, I love my phone. Thank the eyes of Apollo I didn't upgrade to the Tilt. (I was thinking of getting an iPhone but I'm addicted to my slide out keyboard.)
If it wasn't depressingly far away, it wouldn't be Sony Ericsson.
thats too bad... then they'll have to redesign it to compete with iPhone2
you and your crazy imagination, youngster! :P
As much as your comment sounds like fanboy talk, I can't but agree! I mean, I said this before, if iPhone 2 had all the things X1 has, I'm buying it for sure, it is not about companies, it's about good product, whoever makes it, and if Apple had good stuff with their next iPhone, I might ditch X1 big time, as many will do too!!
Don't hate me, I have to be honest here.
The 2nd Generation iPhone should be out months before the X1 sees release. We'll be speculating about the 3rd model by then.
SE jumped the gun and showed us what seems to be a woefully incomplete product just to say "Look what we're doing!" But it should come as no surprise seeing as how it runs Windows and all.
I have no idea why Americans put the dates the other way around. We have them from smallest, to largest. M/D/Y? Silly.
because when I'm saying a date, I don't say today is two march 2008, I say it's march 2nd 2008
Because saying "2nd of March 2008" would just be obscene now wouldn't it...
That's because you've been taught to say it that way, not because it logically makes sense. At any rate, it doesn't annoy me, I've just got no idea how the difference came into being as people emigrated from Europe to the US.
well, other countries are used to saying " 2nd of March 2008". It's the way you're taught. I'm american though so I like our way better, but nonetheless, it's the way it is
Frankly, the American way is wrong, but the European way is MORE wrong. Completely backwards - a nightmare for sorting. Dates should always be YYYY/MM/DD.
Umm yeah Eureopean format... is this like the thing where Europe is referenced to as one country, or..?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_date#Usage_issues
if everybody could just use iso 8601 we would all be happier! ren and stimpy happy!
also, why not just use the metric system?
and drive on the right side of the street. I mean really.. wtf!
this has nothing to do with the xperia.
umm carry on
Almost all Mainland Europe drives on the right.
No they dont....
yah they do
Yep - US doing it differently to virtually the rest of the world as usual. Believe me though, it causes endless confusion up here in Canada... US influence means lots of people write today as 3/2/08 while traditional, sensible and European influences mean lots of people write today as 2/3/08 - it's totally confusing and for 12 days a month you've no idea what someone's talking about!
And don't get me started about the crazy part-English/part-American spelling up here *LOL*
does anybody know about how much it will cost? $$$$
It looks like February 10, 2009. (D/M/Y) Even than, that's LONG.
I really want an X1, but a delay of a year might make me look else where. I wonder what was the point of showing of the X1 when it won't be ready for a year. It's like one of those horse drawn carriages, and the driver sticks a carrot on a pole in front of the horse, but the horse won't be getting that carrot for a long time.
Interesting how the lifespan is exactly three years for every single phone that SE releases/released.
This is the same that have happened to SE so many times. Hopefully they will get it in time because this is first time for a long time since they have have stealed some thunder from Nokia and Sams. Because if thats true there will be better device out from the other big guys. Even Nokia is rumored to have it's true flagship phone introduced in 2008 summer and TS device should be out Dec 2008.
Thought if it all sucks theres always X1 even if it comes out late.
I agree that the X1 is pretty damn sweet but how the hell are people here declaring this is their next phone when all they have to go on is a Sony promotional video?
took the words outta my...
...foot?
They just dont learn do they? It will be p990 all over again and be outdated when it's really out and get wiped by Samsung and Nokia's N series. Hopefully it's just typo.
Seriously go to hell Sony. I love all your tech but you cannot show us something so amazing and then be like, wait a friggin year! #1 it will get outdated faster than we will like and #2 nobody wants to wait, it just disheartens us and my love has dropped just that much more =( RIDICULOUS, I'm soooo looking forward to the X1, I couldn't careless the price, what a product but what a friggin blow
Oh God please no... Although it will save me early termination fees from Verizon cause I was planning on making the switch. That baby is too beautiful to not have
Well, ignoring the fact that there are a lot of people who are prepared to commit to a phone on rumour alone (i.e. iPhone circa 2005/6), the specs for the X1 are available, Windows Mobile is a known quantity and we've seen the form factor and the videos of the interface improvements. As a result, it's pretty easy to say that this will be my next phone assuming that the initial reviews are positive.
Argh... First the i-mate Ultimate 9502, now this. I was just telling my friend not more than 8 hours ago that 2nd Q2008 was a long time to wait. Why is it when I most badly need a replacement for my aging (and dying) Cingular 8125 all the phones that look like great candidates are getting harder and harder to grasp???
well the release dates seems accurate for the recently released phones so i think this document is accurate! thanks for the heads up engadget.. time to forget the X1 and get something else..
on the sony press site they have mentioned "Selected markets, second half of 2008"
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/corporate/press/pressreleases/pressreleasedetails/globalx1-20080210
for anyone that's interested, saw this this morning and love the phone, now just have to wait to upgrade from the K800i :p
Lets hope it will comes with WindowsMobile7 if it´s delayed.
Wow - I sent this in 1 week ago.
Just got of the phone with my insider on SE and got the following answer.
"X1 will, as previously communicated, launch during 2H 2008. Any other information is merely rumours and speculation."
This would be awful if it turns out to be true, but to be fair i'm sure with a small bit of searching I could find a phone with simaler specs
And im contridicting what I say all the time but other SE smartphones are ugly but I never buy anything based on looks, always on specs :/
But the X1 doesnt seem to fit the pattern of time between coming soon/release date that the other ones have so I say (hope) this is a typo
"That's because you've been taught to say it that way, not because it logically makes sense."
I guess that explains manifest destiny (or Microsoft's mission statement) then. ;)
Back on topic - Prelease info is great for publicity - and even better for your competitors to up the ante.
Another black eye for HTC
SE!!! you made me cry again!!! Its not your first time to delay a cell for so long! Remember the first W-Series, the M600, the P-Series and even the K850i(still not avaliable to get it tomorrow from the sonystyle.com now)
From developer.sonyericsson.com: "The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 will be available in selected markets during the second half of 2008."

i really dont think it will take so long though i presume it will take some time.i had the privilege of trying one out at the mobile asia expo. it didnt have the panel extensions. it kept popping the message "panelmanager.exe not found" lol. also the touch screen didnt respond too some areas of the screen . it seemed as if it was not programmed for those specific sections odd... anyways in the places it did the work the screen was more responsive than the imate 9502 which i tried out as well. the keyboard offers very good tactile feedback. it feels like a very well made handset. also the selections keys of the face seem to have some sort of touch sensitivity as i could navigate just touching them in a particular directions. i was not able to check the system (about) screen as i didnt have enough hands on time. oh yeah that screen definitely is gorgeous .
When I checked out the X1 at MWC I was *very* impressed by the the aesthetic build quality: a lovely set of materials had been chosen to construct the device - a sapphire-like glass for the screen and well-finished metal body.
Viewing the various demonstrations, I began to worry though. The demonstrator seemed to be having numerous "software" issues with the device: unresponsiveness and some random crashing. I'm guessing that this may have been down to either the touchscreen interface (flaky at best in the demo), the new windows mobile OS or perhaps due to the general alpha version of the adapted pages interface.
I was hoping that these were software issues that could be sorted out relatively quickly, but maybe the issues are deeper, somewhere in the hardware level?
And why am i not surprised? Oh, i remember now. I've waited for more than a year for P990i to show up after they announced it, finally gave up and bought something else. There is a huge difference between announcing it and releasing it when it's done by SE. And that's what separates them from Nokia.
They have now commented officially in Sweden that "The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 will be available in selected markets during the second half of 2008." As before.
X1 still aiming for 2nd half of 2008
http://blog.se-nse.net/2008/03/03/x1-is-an-h2-product-weve-got-the-official-statement/
Yea i was totally going to get this for my first good phone, but i cant wait 11 months. I think im just gonna get an iphone or a tilt.
