Greenhouse's 22-inch GH-JEF223SH-LB LCD monitor picks HDMI over DVI
Nothing too spectacular here, but Greenhouse has introduced an all new 22-inch LCD monitor over in Japan. Aside from the perfectly average WSXGA+ (1,680 x 1,050) resolution, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 1,000: contrast ratio and two-millisecond response time, the GH-JEF223SH-LB actually does away with DVI in favor of HDMI. Granted, there's still a VGA port in case you're in a pinch, but we would've preferred all three considering the somewhat steep ¥45,799 ($438) price tag.

DVI is HDMI! The only difference is the form factor. (Not 100% true, but true enough.)
My current only has HDMI and VGA. I use a DVI-HDMI adapter for it. You can get the adapters for very cheap from Monoprice.
Not really true at all. DVI is limited to 8-bit color and there is no embedded audio option.
Does this monitor have built-in speakers? HDMI audio would be awesome for that. It looks like it doesn't but neither do Sceptre monitors even thought they do.
not true
HDMI = (DHCP enabled) DVI + Digital Audio
yes, there are differences between hdmi and dvi, but HDMI is fully backwards-compatible with DVI. most monitors come with a cable, if they included a DVI-HDMI cable, there really would be no difference to a monitor with a DVI port.
@John
DHCP is a networking term for dynamic IP addresses. I think you meant HDCP - which is not specific to HDMI. HDCP can (and does) exist on DVI devices as well.
@kyle
The way the backward compatibility is that when a monitor is DVI, the HDMI source will discover this during the handshake and revert to "DVI Mode" which as I said is limited to 8-bit color.
There's all kinds of "DVI is the same & just as good" type nonsense comments I see on this blog and others. It's not. For example, try running the Monoprice Matrix HDMI switch with DVI-only equipment in the mix. You'll quickly discover how useless it is unless you have a completely separate device for switching audio cables.
I've never heard of this company before. Do they also grow tomatoes?
Monitor: "Im gonna pick..."
DVI: "Please be me, oh PLEASE BE ME"
Monitor: "HDMI"
DVI: "WHAT THE F@#$!?"
DisplayPort FTW.
Is that a Vista sticker? Monitors need to be Vista capable now?
I was wondering the same thing... I think MS is in enough trouble just for putting those things on computers. Imagine if they started putting them on random, standardized peripherals...
Well it seems monitors with HDCP support advertise it as being Vista capable, when in reality they are essentially just DRM capable which happens to be something that might be required by DRMed video on Vista in the future if DRM hasn't died by the time Vista has sufficient market penetration to justify this kind of DRM. Personally, I think DRM will be dead before then because we've been seeing a lot of movement towards DRM-free media.
Yeah, like us linux users who rip through every bit of DRM we have to to get our own code on the media we wish to play. We will not relent, we will not stop, we will not go away. If we have to, we will murder DRM with 4 inch serrated kitchen knives, in every incarnation we must.
I suggest they save themselves the trouble and pain and give up now.
I hate people that do nothing other than bitch and moan about grammar etc on comments so I'm a big hypocrite BUT what I hate more is the misuse and overuse of the word "Random" - random is ONLY A CONCEPT - like infinity - it DOES NOT EXIST - it would be much better if you had to use that word to put something like "seemingly at random"....
Stupid people in the UK say things like "yeah I was out the other night and I randomly bumped into john. Crazy I know! he was with these two random girls...." (yukkky!)
Even though my gfx card and monitor are both dvi, I got two hdmi-dvi adapters and connect them with an hdmi cable. I move my stuff around a lot and it's easier to plug and unplug the hdmi cable and leave the adapters connected; plus the cable is thinner and more flexible than any dvi cable I've had. It works fine for me, and when everything is hdmi, I dont need another cable, just stick the cheap adapters in the drawer.
soylent greenhouse is people
This monitor looks exactly the same as the 22" Westinghouse monitor I got at Target for ~$130 during the Christmas season. Is it a rebrand?
Yeah, it looks the same, but 5ms sooner.
i was looking at the pic and then at my monitor and was thinking the same thing. $180 @ BB back in summer tho.
That's the worst photoshoped glare job I've ever seen.
Rip-off.
My "22 Hanns G LCD was £135 =/
