Yeah, we know. We've seen this
EB MID engineering sample kicking around for nearly a year now. However, this is the first time we've seen it running a rock-solid, VoIP application on that tiny
Silverthorne, eh hrm,
Atom processor. So solid, in fact, that Intel purposely crashes the OS while the VoIP call keeps on kicking. That piece of magic comes via VirtualLogix who keep the network stack and audio running in a virtualized Linux instance while the main OS reboots. Pretty compelling glimpse of a future without voice contracts. Don't believe us? Check the video after the break.

What the hell is that?
paragraph @ Mar 3rd 2008 1:26PM
Pretty Impressive... but how about not spending the time on that and work on getting rock solid host OS support... you know... so it dosn't crash...
Impressive though...

You must be referring to an Apple device that hasn't quite been released yet.
paragraph @ Mar 3rd 2008 3:31PM
@Alex
I see what you did there.
-_-
Just saying that this would be pointless if the software was rock solid..

Just imagine a VoIP convo being started, (inaudible by the camera), then a crash button being pressed and the OS rebooted, while the inaudible VoIP continues to work.

Die in a fire, spammer. Thank you.
darex @ Mar 3rd 2008 10:36PM
Not so impressive considering I have done many lengthy (>45 mins) video conferences over Skype between the US and Europe on my Eee PC, without a single hick-up.
Jimmy Jones @ Mar 3rd 2008 2:02PM
rot in hell and may Hell fall on top of you before you rot inside of it! with your stupid spamming strategy!

"Pretty compelling glimpse of a future without voice contracts"
Uh... That's not the point of this device at all. It's just a Linux UMPC that happens to have a fancy VoIP feature.
But if you're going to go that route, wasn't Skype already a pretty compelling glimpse of a future without voice contracts?
boofighter @ Mar 3rd 2008 2:34PM
i just saw that unit displayed at london drugs in edmonton with sony badges all over it, and it was running vista. i will go and take a picture of it today.
Arnie @ Mar 3rd 2008 2:42PM
Ok so you might not have voice contracts but you will have data contracts!! you know to run Skype!!
travis @ Mar 3rd 2008 2:44PM

Fred @ Mar 3rd 2008 2:57PM
