Rock Band drum kit modded for pencil use
We've already seen a real drum kit modded for use with Rock Band, but that's unsurprisingly not the only bit of customization going on, as evidenced by this considerably scaled down kit created by David Yoon. While he hasn't provided a complete how-to, we're guessing quite a few folks out there will be able to follow his lead, with the mod consisting primarily of some felt covered tin lids, a pair of CDs and some foam for the foot pedal, and a couple of new piezo transducers from Radio Shack that replace the stock ones. Put that all together and you'll be reliving your desk-tapping days from high school in no time.

Not a shabby setup of console but the dude needs to spend a few of them pennies on a new set of speakers. I bought that Logitech 4.1 system 6 years ago, crappy speaker which shouldn't be used with a flat screen TV, let alone a 360.

maybe a new TV stand also...

Perhaps he doesn't live with his rich parents that buys him whatever he wants like some people.

Actually that appears to be a roll-away gaming rig. The living room tv is on that ikea entertainment stand to the right, in light wood color. I have this stand so I know.

I have that speaker set. I don't don't know about your experience (maybe you got a bad one), but I love it. Sure, it's not great compared to a good home-theater solution, but for computer speakers they're pretty damn awesome.
Lars @ Mar 4th 2008 2:55PM
Oh, especially when you think about the fact that they cost around $60, compared to home-theater setups which may cost from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

Has anyone made a mod where you can air drum and just tap your foot for bass drum?
Ray @ Mar 4th 2008 1:40PM
Well
dardub @ Mar 4th 2008 1:43PM
If you use Hering's mod for Frets on Fire and some wiimotes you can airdrum. But thats probably more difficult than using actual drums.
Ray @ Mar 4th 2008 1:43PM
Well my band just put the piezos in a pair of pants and one attached under the shoe for the bass drum. It's really cool because when we're doing a gig where we don't want to set up a drum set or there isn't room, our drummer can just play on his pants with it controlling a drum machine via MIDI. There's also a line out jack for a raw "amplified pants" sound.
Yes, I'm talking about "real" bands, btw, but it would be easy enough to make these work with Rock Band.
Ray @ Mar 4th 2008 1:44PM
Posting glitch, I made no such one-word posts.
bobartig @ Mar 4th 2008 2:21PM
@Ray: Are these specially padded pants, or is your drummer cool with smacking himself in the legs over and over again?
I just got this image of a guy wearing piezo-pants and a piezo shirt, with shoe-piezos dancing all over the stage and smacking himself while drumming out a solo for a gig. That would be amazing, or disturbing, or both.
Ray @ Mar 4th 2008 4:12PM
There aren't any pads, but he uses his hands, not drum sticks, so it doesn't hurt or anything. And yeah that thing you were describing is exactly what I'm talking about. We're also working on a top hat hi-hat.

@bobartig
I think Joey Kramer from Aerosmith had a drum suit for one of their tours. Did a solo with it or something. I kinda wish I could have seen it 'cause he's gotta be one of the worst rock drummers out there... It would have been nice to see him beat the shit out of himself.

finally all those years of bugging teachers and classmates by tapping pencils on my desk will pay off ;p
Gfxlonghorn @ Mar 4th 2008 4:46PM
WOW these things are so small now, next up they might be able to make a rock band drum set as small as a PS3 controller.. oh wait
phanbouy @ Mar 4th 2008 5:08PM
in 5 years rock band jokes will be like milli vanilli jokes were 10 years ago
