Not quite a year after Samsung joyfully brought the
Spinpoint MP1 into the world, the MP2 has arrived to rightfully take the baton. According to Sammy, the 2.5-inch drive is best suited in desktop replacement lappies, workstations and blade servers, and it's said to provide quicker read / write speeds than the
500GB M6 announced at CES. The 7,200 RPM drive is slated to land at $299, but an 80GB version will be available for a bit less cash, too. In less sluggish news, the firm has also
restated its plans to deliver a 256GB SSD by 2009, and if you were looking for even more bulletin board material, Jim Elliott, vice president of memory marketing for Samsung Semiconductor, proclaimed that it was "trying to double SSD capacity every 12 months." Music to our ears? You bet.

It's nice that they work on doubling capacity...hopefully that results in a per GB halving of price....
Andrew @ Mar 5th 2008 12:09AM
still holding out for 1 TB
Liam @ Mar 5th 2008 6:40AM
I'm doing fine with an 80gb HDD in my laptop... just thought I'd throw that in there.

256gb is awesome
but i'd rather see them lowering the price. it would be great if they got 256gb, but if it costs $3000 it doesn't really matter, almost no one will use it. if getting the max size greater helps lower the price by improving the technology, have at it.
that said, i want an ssd really bad.
kevinm @ Mar 5th 2008 12:37AM
Yeah but how much?
Mush @ Mar 5th 2008 12:58AM
your arm i think?

The problem is right now it seems like physical space is not the issue, but rather just the price per GB, no matter what.
I'd be all for a 5.25" SSD HD if a 1TB was $500, but the size does not help the price it looks like.

What happened? This post is horrible, without any information about the new drive's storage, nor any background on the previous one. We want news and detail, not up coming product's name! And this post is almost all copy and paste from the other site, do a better job, Engadget.

if you're that unhappy with their reporting, why don't you cancel your subscription and ask for a refund? oh yeah--silly me. blogs are free.

That article is quite confusing. Why is there a picture of an SSD drive when the MP2 apparently is a normal hard disk? Also, the article does not state the actual size of the drive.

What a pathetic tard I am, wanting for a bigger SSD to better enable cloud computing. Why am I so conflicted?
JWD @ Mar 5th 2008 8:31PM
How the heck can you have a 7200 RPM solid state drive? What is rotating?
Nick @ May 25th 2008 10:09PM
If you read the article carefully, the 7200RPM drive is the new MP2 they are releasing. Additionally, they made an announcement that they are going to release a 256GB SSD next year, in 2009.

This is really looking promising,
But there is no mention about the products from other players, what are the trends.
And also it is too costly at the time.
