3G iPhone: is June launch now inevitable?

Hint: Apple's WWDC, while unannounced, is expected to begin on June 8th.

A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
I would have to say that the name of the software update is a BIG clue. iPhone software 2.0 . This isn't 1.2 . This isn't a "software update" this isn't even on par with the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard.
This is a whole new potato. And a new potato will be backwards compatable with EDGE, but it will be made for 3G.
Of course they'll release the 3G IPhone in June. It's perfectly spaced out from the SDK announcement and in conjunction with the 2.0 upgrade. This is typical Apple timeline.
Yeah, remember at the event they never mentioned EDGE or anything of the such, just "going through your carrier" or etc.
So say we all.
I doubt a 3G iPhone will be released in June. It doesn't really make sense given the fact that Apple just released the 16 gig version a month ago. Why release a capacity upgrade like that in February when you plan on releasing a full blown upgrade just 4 months later? I have no doubts that a 3G version will launch eventually, but when it does, I expect it will be a model with a price tag far exceeding the $500 of the 16 gig model, with noticeably poorer battery life to boot. All of you asking for a 32+ gig iPhone with 3G, and a higher megapixel camera are dreaming if you expect it to retail for any less than $600.
I'd rather have a thinner and lighter iphone instead of 3G.
Gee 3G Applie I phone zowwwiwwwwwweeeeee!!! How Much?? eh $8-900.00 dollar??? I bet for this phone.. Hey my Blackberry Curve is awesome..and Iam on AT&T !! How about that!?
I wouldn't underestimate Jobs. The next iPhone could be significantly upgraded.
A June release to a potential huge pool of execs and other biz enterprise users would help him reach his 10 mil mark by the end of this year.
And those that think edge is fast enough are just trying to make themselves feel good. :)
i think they should go with a CDMA insted and unleach on a new market im sure our EvDO networks will keep up with the constant connection of EDGE
The next iPhone will come sooner rather than later. I think that Apple misjudged the international market with the original iPhone, failing to capitalize on a rapidly growing Asian market. Clearly, they won't miss the boat with the next iteration. The fact that the latest updates of the 16GB model were on top of the current 8GB model without price cuts suggests that Apple has maintained a significant advantage over competitors more than a year after its original release. The SDK released today shows that Apple is really targeting a much larger user base. Integrating business platforms will level the playing field for Apple against RIM. Creating a new revenue stream for iTunes will give Apple yet another advantage over other device makers. Regardless of the advantage, sales of the iPhone continue to slow simply due to the expectation of consumers to pay less for products that have been on the market for some time. The added value of features released today will help the iPhone keep its value, but Apple will still have to cut prices accordingly to keep sales at a decent clip. When the new iPhone is released Apple but should maintain the original iPhone model in its lineup. With the cost of iPhone components dropping by the day, I would estimate that a target retail price of 299-349 would be ideal to increase the popularity of the iPhone platform not just in the U.S. but internationally.
After thinking about it for a bit, I found it a bit odd how Steve introduced the "App store" yesterday. While talking about how you can download wirelessly, he said "and the app is wirelessly downloaded to the iPhone using the cell (pause) network or wifi.
Usually when he brings up downloading things to the iPhone, he makes the case that wifi is faster then 3G, or uses the word EDGE. Interesting that he did not do either, and he paused halfway through saying "cell network". Maybe June is not that far off...
June would make sense, it would make the iphone a year old and everyone has had their fun with it. If they don't add the basic features like video recording or basic mobile flash by June people (including me) will be pissed.
when the 3G iPhone does come out I will be passing down my 8GB version to someone in my family...the anticipation of when or if it will come out this year is killing me...that is the thing with Apple- they like to keep everything so hush-hush...I know people who work in the Apple Store who can't give me any info because they don't know anything...in June of this year I am going 2 the Cupertino Store & maybe if its out by then I will be able 2 get it...when I think about how free wifi is becoming such a common thing- in Panera Bread, Starbucks, etc. I don't want 2 spend many $$$$ on something that I won't really use too much...at my mom's job I surf on the wifi there...I am home-schooled so I surf on wifi at home...there are Starbucks all over my neighborhood...I love Panera Bread's food and can surf there...I wonder just how 3G will benefit me? Can someone answer that 4 me? Should I wait for it or just go get the 16GB iPhone this weekend when I get my allowance?
its firmware 2.0 not 1.1.5 there will be a new iphone. also i talked to a worker at apple and he said that it would come out in june. its gunna happen we just need to wait it out
