iPhone 2.0 software update hits in June

That sound you hear? A million rabid iPhone users crying. After teasing us with mountains of glorious SDK features and apps, Apple dropped the bomb that we won't be getting any of those features until the iPhone / iPod touch 2.0 software update, which arrives as a free update in June (for the iPhone, iPod touch users have to pay up again) and includes App Store. Selected developers will get a chance at a beta version of 2.0 to test their new applications out as of today, and we have a funny feeling somebody's going to be putting in some hours to try and crack this thing for the rest of us. In addition to the SDK-related features, the 2.0 update brings parental controls, such as allowing parents to turn of Safari or the App Store to keep those kiddies safe, and boosts mail functionality with PowerPoint viewing and mass message moving / deleting (freaking finally).

I think it's interesting that all the articles everywhere mention the 2.0 release being in June, but nobody mentions what the photo of the slide above clearly says: "late June". Although I suppose that's implicit with software releases, viz the "February" SDK release happening in March.

Communication devices are constantly evolving, requiring modifications, sometimes costing money. I agree that sometimes a charge for upgrading is needed, I mean they're a business - not a charity. But there is NO reason to charge unreasonably high upgrade fees. Plus us Brits have to pay more! One could also argue, why are some upgrades by Apple free (Apple TV) and others not? It all smacks of blatant profiteering to me. Apple Cultists like yourself make ME laugh.

Seriously. I have an iPhone. I think it's totally awesome. Even with the stupid, annoying and ultimately crippling "little things" that Apple have done to make more money.

Recessed headphone jack. Lack of A2DP. Lack of user-removable battery. Lack of expandable aps. Well. At least they realised that with the last one, they'll be able to make some more money, and we're going to get it.

How long does it take to make an SDK? What did they use to build the apps currently available if there's no SDK at all? For gods sake, what's wrong with the whole system?

Apple came out with a device that kicks arse in a major way, but have crippled it in ways that annoy people, but don't stop them buying it. Not to mention imposing absolutely assholish restrictions stopping it from getting to countries who don't like imposing evil charges on their customers.

Seriously. Apple are still living in the day when you had to pay for processing cycles on a server to do anything.

Their business plan is absolutely without thought to sensible consumers. There needs to be less consideration as to "How could we make more money off this device?" and more given to "How can I keep my customers loyal other than making a decent initial product and syphoning their cash away from them with overpriced accessories?"

For gods sake. It hasn't made it to Australia. It hasn't even made it to CANADA. That's absolute insanity. Apple fanboys, you are all fucking morons. Apple don't give a shit about their customers. They just care about selling their product, fuck the consumer.

I think a lot of people are confused about the SDK. The SDK is not in beta. The SDK has been completed and was released yesterday. The iPhone 2.0 software, which makes it possible for you to download the new apps made with the SDK isn't being released until June.

typical.... ipod touch users have to pay again, i think id rather spend a few hours modding the ipod so you can get it all for free rather than pay every single time a few apps or updates are released.

Apple talks about how much can be done with the ipod and how its so much more than an mp3 player but forget to tell you you have to pay more money to get the best features gah.

Why is it unacceptable? Touch users bought the Touch as it is, anything added is a bonus, for which there's no gun pointed to your head.
Just be thankfull they put wi-fi into the Touch at all. They could so easily have left it out and just left it as an iPod.
iPhone users pay through the nose already with the heavy monthly bills, etc.

I've had my iPhone almost a year now, and it still amazes me how people can't wait to bitch about what it can't (or won't) do. To me, it's like buying a new car and getting pissed off because it won't fly. Yeah, you could modify it and maybe make it fly, but you would probably break it, and you would definitely void the warranty. If you want something that flies, buy a plane or copter. If you want something that does things the iPhone doesn't do, then go buy that. It's pretty simple, really. BTW, my iPhone does everything the manufacturer told me it would do when I bought it. And if they tell me now that it will do more, then that's just gravy.
