It didn't take months for the iPhone to be jailbroken, and much less time for decent apps to be written. Though we don't yet know what the process will be to get apps published, I expect many of the developers who already have apps to work feverishly to port them to the official SDK.
Having said that, I don't see myself using vanilla firmware for the iPhone, and will continue to jailbreak my phone as jailbreaks become available.
Except for one extra factor this time around - money. Apple has such an amazing vertical market, with a great atmosphere where $5 games and $5-15 apps would be impulse buys, I think you'd be surprised at how much apps pop up.

I can see myself still using my jailbroken iPhone months after.
It'll be months before there's a good enough selection of software available for the device.

I don't think it's going to take that long.

First leak, this afternoon if you navigated to the BBC iPlayer site with an iPhone you got the "Beta BBC iPlayer for iPhone" screen.

They've since taken it down again, wonder why? But if you add the icon to your home screen it's still the shiney iPhone custom one.
So it looks like the Brits are going to get streaming video straight from the broadcaster, better than Slingbox?
