HTC launching MID devices in 2008?
DigiTimes is back with another Taiwan industry rumor. This time they have HTC launching MID handsets in 2008. No surprise there as HTC jumped into the UMPC game long ago with the Shift. Of course, the whole thing becomes suspect when their source claims that MIDs will be "squeezing the market share currently enjoyed by UMPCs." Everyone and their monkey knows that UMPCs don't account for enough market share to warrant joy.

Yeah yeah... Just make sure, if you buy this, that DRIVERS are included. After the Tytn II/Cruiser fiasco, better be safe than sorry.

Given that the MIDs are supposed to run Linux, does this mean we'll finally see a non-WinMo device from HTC? (supposed to happen with Android anyway, but still...)

I wouldn't hold your breath with HTC, they were way out of the ballpark in even getting their Shift to the market; even then it was costing a lot more than initially expected. Secondly, their market penetration strategy suck monkey-sack with no dirrect sales in the US and number of available products in Europe really low.

I like some of the MID premises. But as a university student I want a serious convergence device that has the size of a MID device but still have basic laptop functions. It must have the ability to use MS-Office documents as well as a real internet browser (capable of Java & frames). Games and music/multimedia is just a bonus. If the device can't run webCT software (that many colleges and universties rely on) then I can't buy it! I want something that has the simpler functions of my laptop. Carrying a bunch of books around is a pain as it is! Maybe a stripped down version of XP would be better than Linux?

Not that MID is a really great name or anything, but MID devices? Mobile Internet Device devices? Really?
