I thought that the PS3 uses a 3.5 inch drive. I know someone who put in a 500gb HDD. I dont know how but they did.

No the PS3 uses a 2.5 inch SATA drive, which you slide into the side slot. You can attach a 3.5 inch drive using the HyperDrive converter which you stick between the 3.5 inch drive and the PS3.
