ASUS gets bamboo happy at CeBIT 2008
In case you weren't aware, ASUS has a little bit of thing for bamboo, and its passionate displays of affection were unapologetic at CeBIT this year in Germany. The company was showing off a number product concepts on the show, as seen above, and while little info was given on specs or releases, they certainly seem to be a sign of things to come. We're actually a bit more excited about that Essentio 5110 bamboo desktop than the various laptops, but, as demonstrated by the EcoBook, ASUS is probably going to be pushing this mostly in a laptop direction.

ANOTHER post about ASUS? It seems like every third post on Engadget is about ASUS or the eepc..... I mean, this is way to much, why don't you just change the name of this blog to ASU-gadget. I swear I'm going to stop reading.
;)
;)
I see what you did there...
Lol. I see where you're coming from. But isn't it the same thing we said when they were on an Apple frenzy not too long ago? =P.
Amol, that IS the joke.
Yes stop reading and complaining! When you have your own tech website you can post whatever you like.
is it me, or am i the only one to find wood effect cheap looking, and maybe abit hiddeous?
It's not just you.
But it might be that I grew up riding in the "family truckster" style station wagon that was red with a hideous fake wood grain wide stripe around it. I'll know more after next weeks counseling session ;)
It's not you, I agree in most cases.
However, the "Concept Bamboo Notebook" reminds me of a bowling alley and somehow I like that. Weird considering my average game is probably a whopping buck-30.
The look can be enhanced, but people should be more aware of the touch:
Since the ancient time bamboo has been used in many furniture items such as seat covers, mattress covers and even pillows in China. This was and still is particularly popular during the summer, as bamboo is cool to the touch.
I agree, wood effect stuff would be cheap looking. However, this is actual real life wood, so I imagine in person I would actually be quite nice.
"9 out of 10 pandas lover them."
(the other 10% bought a Mac)
I am not shure how I feel about wood on computers... they kind of look like mid 80s station wagons to me.
Ehh, it looks okay, but I doubt I would buy a bamboo laptop. I guess I would have to use one and see it in person to say for sure.
No, they are in fact quite awful looking.
I got the big bamboo
If they where made of real wood like the iPod (link below) that someone covered in wood, I would totally get one. These just look bad.

Truth be told, you'd probably buy any Apple product even if it were covered in shite...
That is a very bad stereotype about Mac users. I use PC's too. I like XP, its a very stable OS. As for ASUS they make good hardware. So along as it was XP and not Vista I would get one.
I just prefer OS X as my OS of choice. For gaming I use XP and for my design work I use OS X. I even use linux for some things. It is good to have knowledge in multiple platforms.
So pretty much what I'm saying is that yes I like Mac's but that wouldn't stop me from getting a PC. The iPod reference had nothing to do with me being a fanboy or anything like that. It was to show how the wood on these laptops should have been done.
it didnt work with cars, not going to with electronics
It worked on electronics... Before.
sorry folks, going to have to say I like them. would rather have the dark color bamboo though if they make that an option

(as if my forum name would let you think I didn't like this kind of stuff)
they should colour the wood, or spray patterns or something
I'm going to have to hold out for the Pergo version.
At least the lid of the laptops double as a cutting board. Throw in a Sony battery and you'll have yourself a bonfire in minutes.
Add some real bamboo paneling and I might look at them. It's not like it's hard to grow the stuff.
so when are they making a wood-eee
^lamest joke in the universe
Gilligan would have loved this. The Skipper too now Maryann would have wanted it pink though
jesus... what burnout designer did they hire for these?
I grew up riding in a wood-paneled station wagon and spent a decent amount of my childhood in a horrendously ugly wood-paneled family/play room. Both events were long enough ago that the idea of a similarly appointed laptop seems sufficiently retro and quite aesthetically pleasing. At this point, anything's better than silver.
is the technology world thinking "GREEN", what has the world come to. it too much hype , its hard enough just to get a computer that would not break , now a bamboo pc ?
These are entirely ugly. They got it right with the EcoBook, which I think is a beaut. This looks like cheap balsa wood or press board.
Does it come with Windows Vista Wood Edition?
I won't get one until they're made entirely out of wood.

I wouldn't mind a real "green" PC.
Bamboo is wonderful....why would anyone want plastic over bamboo?
Eh, fine I'll be the odd one out and label that as pretty damn hawt.
Didn't we just see one of these?
