Diamond-studded iPod shuffle to be auctioned in London
Yeah, there's a lot of good, civically-minded things you could do with your cash... but wouldn't it be more fun to blow it on a 1GB iPod? If you're dying to prove how little £20,000 (or around $40,000) means to you, here's your chance. A jeweler named Thomas Heyerdahl has created an 18 karat, diamond studded, white and pink gold iPod shuffle, meant to be auctioned at a charity in London. We've seen an almost identical version which appeared to be selling just for the heck of it -- at least this one seems to be going to good cause.

I would never pay money for anything made by Apple, let alone £20,000... but this is one of those rare items which actually looks better aftering being decked out with the bling.
Nice that it's going to charity anyways.
Well, I don't mind shuffling cash for a shuffle - I bought one for my mom for c'mas when they first came out.
But this, it's disgusting. As interesting I am in gadgets, when I see a bunch of crapgadgets posted on engadget, a diamond-studded shuffle which will get outdated next month seems so worthless.
ZOMG, ipod, must blog!
I hate all this 23 kt gilded crap too, but to tell you the truth this one's actually not that bad.
If it breaks and you send it in for repairs will they clean/wipe the surface and give you back in the original shell?
maybe the battery with blow up...
This is Apple, not Microsoft...
apple stuff blows up and catches fire...
All that money blown on all those fancy stones and all they could use them on were the old style headphones? Cheap bastards...
lol exactly what I was thinking. If I'm paying $40,000 for a shuffle. I expect to at least have the new headphones, if nothing else have 2 gigs instead of 1
You'd think they could bling up a pair of Shure headphones or something and at least use a iPod that has a screen. I don't think I could stand having a shuffle.
Rich people ... stop making this crap. Feed the poor instead.
Q. F. T.
FYI- the £20 000 that it got auctioned off for is apparently for CHARITY.
jeez...
i have to agree: rich people should be helping the poor without getting shiny presents in return. doing the right thing is its own reward. i'll even take a cynical swipe at the jeweler: you know this is good PR for him, right?
In case you weren't afraid enough of losing it.
While I'm hardly supporting people to keep pumping out things like this, at least the gold and diamonds will keep their value even if the Shuffle is obsolete...that being said for once I'd like to see one of these jewelers not only mod the outside of it in 'bling' but spend some extra $$$ and mod the inside as well...I mean if it's being auctioned for around $40,000 dollars, why not spend a grand and throw up a custom shuffle with double the capacity with some super nice ear buds than what's sold by Apple? One of these jeweler guys has to have a computer geek nephew somewhere to help them out...
Hell..maybe I'll do it, anyone have some platinum lying around and want to do a charity auction? Brushed Platinum iPod Shuffle with twice the space and platinum ear buds...might even look nice.
Wouldn't you rather a 32GB touch for 60 times less? Stupid rich people.
This isn't rich people being frivolous with their money. This is rich people being frivolous with their money FOR A CHARITY AUCTION.
The nerve!! Rich people buying stuff they want with money they have. Something must be done.
you can add all the gold and diamonds you want, but those stock ipod headphones will still sound like crap.
sorry... my comment went under the wrong person for some reason. A bug, perhaps? Someone move my above comment up near my other one. Thanks.
Yeah... I know it's for charity. They say that in the article, but that still doesn't mean they should be making it. It's a publicity stunt. Are the profits 100% towards charity? Doubtful. Why not just give to charity? Is there a surplus of diamonds now?
what a beautiful piece of shit. rich people are just killing our world.
I'll bet Sir Paul McCartney's ex Heather Mills will be there bidding for something stylish that she can jam out to her favorite bands from the 60's and 70's with in style.
if only i could afford it :(
Why is this on a shuffle? What rich person wants a shuffle?
I think I'd rather buy the (Product) RED iPod Shuffle instead. A portion of money spent on it goes to charity, it plays music and it's £19,968 cheaper.
When I see articles mentioning stuff like this I think, "Oh my, what is this world coming to". When Paris Hilton types see this they think, "Finally... something I can spend my money on".
Paris Hilton can read?
No, but I hear she is attracted to shiny things. Sorta like fish and fishing lures.
Honestly, if you have to be offered a ridiculous (let's be honest, a blinged out shuffle is pretty stupid) mp3 player to get you to donate money to charity, then you are a horribly selfish person who is buying it to make themselves look like a good person.
Also, if you have $40,000+ to drop on a blinged out iPod Shuffle, then you have too much money and should just hand over some of you money for some worthwhile charities.
That's like putting perfume on a pig.
Nobody is going to donate $40,000 to charity for nothing.
I would like to revoke that last statement.
Lame NES mods, east-Asian fakes that will never make it to NA/Euro shores and blingy iPods. Engadget is really scraping the bottom of the barrel for content lately.
when i get rich i will put diamond on my ipod touch.
I have been staring at that pic for the past 10 minutes.
It is exquisitely beautiful. The color is so-o gorgeous
