BTC's 9051H Cheetah "pro" keyboard and mouse
We might like it more if Behavior Tech Computer Corp. were in the business of creating devices to assist in BF Skinner inspired experiments, but instead they've just got stuff like this 9051H Cheetah keyboard / mouse combo. The board has that righty-oriented FPS key cluster, backlit keys that change color according to typing speed, comes bundled with that generic looking laser mouse with variable DPI (800, 1300, and 2000) and two programmable buttons. Sorry folks, no listed price or availability.

The typing speed leds are a good idea
Hugh Newmark @ Mar 16th 2008 3:09PM
I'm far too ADD for something like that.
Bobs @ Mar 16th 2008 9:59PM
Fow what?
RichardBronosky @ Mar 17th 2008 12:56AM
A good typist shouldn't be looking to notice the color change. I take sandpaper to my keyboards to avoid the urge to look.
A menu bar icon might be good though. I think I'll look for one.
WiiFTW @ Mar 16th 2008 3:08PM
This keyboard looks nice...Probably too expensive for me, but nonetheless cool...My guess is about $100, if not more.
Sauerkraut @ Mar 16th 2008 3:14PM
Stop alienating the lefties (10 percent of population) :(
asphixiated @ Mar 16th 2008 3:26PM
I'm a leftie, and i still use the standard WASD, and my mouse on my right hand. I've actually never met anyone who uses the mouse on thier left hand.
Sauerkraut @ Mar 16th 2008 3:36PM
wow
Derek B @ Mar 16th 2008 3:59PM
I'm a lefty too, and use standard WASD and right side mouse. I CAN use a mouse with my left hand, its a little awkward, but then I couldn't use WASD xD.
Ghen @ Mar 16th 2008 4:31PM
I'm a lefty too that uses the righty config for both keyboard and guitar... In both cases for the same reason:
two items I might find at someone else's house that I'd like to use without screwing around.
Everything else I do left handed.
As a computer technician I actually see a lot of variety when it comes to input configuration. I've seen lefties put the mouse on the left with the original button config, switched button config, and switched button config on the right side and work with crossed arms. /shrug
Martin S. @ Mar 16th 2008 4:59PM
I'm a righty and use my left to mouse (I'm still only slightly better with my right) because the damned keypad is in the way on full-sized keyboards. That and having some dexterity with one's non-dominant hand can be advantageous. Also, if you write extensively with your dominant hand it distributes the load a bit more.
Cal @ Mar 16th 2008 8:03PM
Another lefty (well ambidextrous, but left dominant) who uses WASD and right hand mouse here.
I think the reason I do it is that's how the first PC I used was set-up, didn't feel the need to move the move and be awkward.
wunch @ Mar 16th 2008 9:03PM
I'm a lefty and can use the mouse in either hand for general computing, but for gaming I'm way better with the mouse in the left hand.
If you need a custom keyboard setup for gaming, though, I recommend the Zboard Fang; you can place it on either side of your keyboard of choice. I really like mine.
MikeG @ Mar 16th 2008 9:12PM
I'm a part of the L/H WASD group, only person I know who uses the mouse in their left hand is a R/H person.
Such is life.
rfredette27 @ Mar 16th 2008 10:15PM
My Dad's a lefty, and he uses his mouse in his left hand, but he doesn't reverse the right click/left click functions.
Sauerkraut @ Mar 16th 2008 10:05PM
a lotta lefties read engadget lol
webon @ Mar 17th 2008 12:04AM
Hi mi name is Webon and I'm a recovering righty
Adam @ Mar 16th 2008 3:17PM
look and sounds good
might get it if i find it anywere...
Shadowise @ Mar 16th 2008 3:22PM
Actually doesn't look too bad. Some nice design ideas brought together in one place, mouse looks a little lack luster though. I'll keep my eye on it for a price.
Shadowise @ Mar 16th 2008 3:24PM
Now that I think about it, the chain of stores I work for (Maplin Electronics) sells some of BTC's hardware (enclosures and drives mainly), so I might be lucky enough to see one these up close.
Juaquin @ Mar 16th 2008 5:13PM
I'll take the keyboard for a reasonable price ($50-60) but they can keep the mouse. I'll keep my Razer, thanks.
asphixiated @ Mar 16th 2008 3:25PM
Keyboard looks familiar, is this the same keyboard that was in the asus' ROG gaming desktop?
Iain @ Mar 16th 2008 5:21PM
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
It does look very similar, though I think (from memory) that the Asus one looked nicer.
vileta2 @ Mar 16th 2008 5:43PM
yep I had the same thought when I saw this
ByronGman @ Mar 16th 2008 3:44PM
Pffftttt.... WASD
Arrow keys FTW!!!
mushrooshi @ Mar 16th 2008 5:01PM
ASDW is good for when you have to use a MOUSE at the same time...
Unless you are left handed o.o
ByronGman @ Mar 16th 2008 5:22PM
Unless you put your MOUSE on the left side of the computer it makes no difference....
Try it.
Instead of putting your fingers on WASD, put them on the arrow keys. OH magic.... your right hand is still on the right side of your left hand.
vileta2 @ Mar 16th 2008 5:45PM
the problem with arrow keys is that the closest cluster of neighboring keys is too far away to comfortably reach (for things like picking up items, quick switch guns, crouch, sprint, etc).
ByronGman @ Mar 16th 2008 6:37PM
That's really a matter of taste.
This layout is plenty comfortable for me:

So using that plus Fire/Iron Sights/Reload/Grenade/Melee on my mouse (5-button DeathAdder) gives me pretty much everything I need for CoD4.
Reader @ Mar 16th 2008 6:47PM
That might work for FPS games, but MMOs you've got a ton more buttons to be pushing. Need the entire left part of the keyboard pretty much.
ByronGman @ Mar 16th 2008 6:57PM
Ah yeah, that's probably true...
Especially if you need the top line of number keys for spells and stuff.
But all I play is FPS and RTS (and I'm not a shortcut expert when I RTS) so this usually works well for me.
ijyt @ Mar 16th 2008 3:45PM
Hey, it's the Asus Ares one.

Shiny lights... can't... control... impulse buy...
Jason @ Mar 16th 2008 4:19PM
Nice concept. I wonder what the quality of the keys is, though... I currently use a Razer Tarantula and have never had a keyboard that felt so good beneath my fingers. Also, anti-ghosting is something I don't know how gamers live without. I mean, who can stand moving diagonally with WASD and not being able to crouch with C?
Jesse S @ Mar 16th 2008 5:05PM
This actually looks nice. I wonder if it has mechanical keys (doubtful).
Mike @ Mar 16th 2008 5:48PM
I cheetah all the time
The Dude @ Mar 17th 2008 12:55AM
Cheater...Cheetah.
It took me a while but I saw what they [and you] did there.

Maybe it's only a Canadian thing, but here's Ben Johnson explaining it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlL1vl601rk
OneLove @ Mar 16th 2008 6:14PM
for all you "cheetahs" and haxors.
CB @ Mar 16th 2008 6:57PM
I don't know about you guys but a regular keyboard is just fine for me.
kyle allen @ Mar 16th 2008 7:14PM
lol i was guna say the same thing, i wouldn't mind glowy lights and all, but a garage sale keyboard works as good as any other in my opinion.
Cal @ Mar 16th 2008 8:06PM
Unless it's like the one on my parents' PC... If you type more than 2 characters per second it just doesn't respond -.-
Shadowfox952 @ Mar 16th 2008 7:24PM
Keyboard looks nice. Mouse looks like a cheap razer rip though. What's the point of having it be ambidextrous if the keyboard's for righties anyway?
Brandon @ Mar 16th 2008 8:48PM
I'm a lefty, but I use most things with my right hand... except for the mouse. Instead of WASD, I use IJKL. I get more surrounding keys for binding that way, too.
Gfxlonghorn @ Mar 16th 2008 10:27PM
Even as a devout g-15 user, and I can't help but admire the design quality from what I see in the pictures. It is f'in nice in my book, functionality aside(since I really have no idea how it would perform).
