Perhaps the new Calender button is for updating an Exchange-based (?) shared calendar or an XML/subscription calender (such as Google Calendar) streamed in iCal? That way you can refresh the subscribed calendar and always have the latest updates?

Maybe you guys could try that out? (Unless you already figured out what it's for)
