Vista SP1 officially released
Looks like all those rumors yesterday were true -- Microsoft has just posted up the official standalone version of Vista SP1. Sure, you've been able to get it in one way or another for a while now, but if you're into silly things like "legit OS updates," the wow (SP1) is now.Update: Here are the release notes -- as we've known for a while now, it's mostly bug fixes and performance tweaks, but the sheer volume of 'em is something to behold.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

nothing to see here move on
+1 Agree! I don't think there will be any earth shattering difference with the beta version floating around
You're both idiots.
Cool
Anyone got a clue as to when some more languages will become available? I.E. the Dutch version?
If this were an Apple release, Engadget would leave you with no question about anything the update adds, changes or removes.
Here we go again.
Also, don't click download on the READ link too quickly.
DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER:
I guess that shouldn't matter too people. We're all IT Administrators, right?
Why not click the download for one computer? It's still SP1 and will still install and update one computer as well as it would 30 of them. I prefer the standalone "administrator" packages anyway. I can download them and hold on to them if I need them again after a reinstall or something.
No need for the CAPS and freaking out...
Sorry, caps from the link. I don't like that either.
*clicks download*
A new wireless router from apple is breaking news and this isnt? Does AOL Time Warner get a big fat check from apple every month.
Aha now it is.
Why wasn't I warned about the Microsoft store being down?
This is from the MS What's New Page: "... Also, the language-neutral design of Windows Vista necessitates that the service pack be able to update any possible combination of the basic languages supported by Windows Vista with a single installer, so language files for the 36 basic languages are included in the standalone installer."
cos the update is free :p
I usually don't like these anti-Engadget "bias" rants.. But, I think it's gotten to the point of ridiculous... If you look a few posts down, there's a whole list of new features with the iPhone update, which isn't even out until June.. This is out now, plus it affects far more people, but there's only a brief mention...
Just a little personal review after installing it after updating via Windows update (yes, I know there is a changelog, my personal experience here):
> Doesn't seem to improve start-up, shut-down, or restart times.
> Memory dumped after the first restart.
> Connects to my campus network ALOT faster. (2-3 seconds, compared to 7-8)
> Video seems to load faster in my Firefox 3 Beta 4 compared to before.
> The Areo feature (Windows Key + Tab) is much more responsive and doesn't lag when I first press it like it did before.
> Seems to access and copy files faster from my SD card.
I still haven't tested it with any of my games (CoD4, World in Conflict, Crysis) but I hope I get a few gains there as well. So far it seems to play nice with Nvidia 169.44 on a 8600m GT.
Yeah, and also I have to agree with giantenemycrab.
What is up with Engadget like orgasming over the stupid Iphone update and not putting up crap about this?
I mean that Iphone update isn't even out yet, its just something they got early, and conveniently decided needs a whole bunch of attention on the day SP1 comes out. ZOMG ZOMG ITS APPLE AND IPHONE!!!!!!!11!!
giantenemycrab: i figure windows isn't exactly a 'gadget', unlike said phone
@ mappyg
If Windows isn't a "gadget" then neither is the firmware running the Iphone.
They fall in exactly the same category, they are both OS systems for a device.
I don't have Vista, but I'm downloading it to spite... and to steal all your bandwidth.
I just downloaded it and installed it. My computer is also alot faster. At first its slow that's because you have to let it retrain itself. Also I would recommend you defrag your hard drive too.
This was just a post letting us know it was out. Engadget is probably going to do a follow up "Hands on" feature for SP1 like they do with anything important... right?
According to http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/pages/windows-vista-service-pack-1-beta-whitepaper.aspx,
"The standalone service pack will include all languages. It can update all PCs running Windows Vista -regardless of language."
neat
This damn patch is 435 MB.
My God.
my god
that will take a whole 10 minutes to download, and thats on one of our crappy UK broadband connections.
it seems to think its goin to take over an hour to install
the update is 67MB over Windows Update
The update size depends on what updates you already have on your system. On mine it was less than 100 meg for SP1 and downloaded in just minutes!
The 435MB update includes 5 languages, don't do this if you've only got English. Use Windows Update. (personally, I don't see it in WU yet but I'm sorting things out from http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/03/18/windows-vista-sp1-released-to-windows-update.aspx )
I take that back, checking a second time made it show up. But that blog post might be useful for others.
Oh my god, 438mb. That's like half an hour of HD video.
Honestly, I'm a little surprised it's so small.
Why do I see two versions? Theres a 726MB and a 434MB one...
The bigger one is x64 (64bit) and the smaller one is x86 (32bit)
Ah yes, thanks.
I need to get the 64 bit version, do you mind telling me the link?
I can only find the 32 bit version... Thanks in advance
x64 version:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=874A414B-32B2-41CC-BD8B-D71EDA5EC07C&displaylang=en
In case you havent found it yet, here's the x64 version:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=874A414B-32B2-41CC-BD8B-D71EDA5EC07C&displaylang=en
Weird, we both posted it at the exact same time...
is there some other tech site that actually is reporting on this? Engadget's brief mention leaves much to be desired.
The only difference I saw on the two was that once you start the download of each file, you can see in the file name that there is an 'x86' and 'x64' respectively.
Kind of old news no?
This article from Ars is almost a month old.
http://arstechnica.com/journals/microsoft.ars/2008/02/20/vista-sp1-rtw-coming-march-18
Uh yeah people knew it was most likely coming out today, but the fact that it came out today is still, in fact, news.
If it were from Apple, we would have heard about it several times before it comes out as a rumor, then we would have several different posts about it actually coming out, and then a follow-up or two. A draft-n router that most people can't use yet and which might not work once 802.11n is ratified gets more details and posts then SP1 for Vista.
Is it Vista certified?
No, it's "Vista Compatible." There's a difference. lol ...
No, you are both wrong. It is Made For Windows Vista ! lol
Let the MS hating commence...
I hate Vista....
There. Happy?
I don't mind it too badly, but then again it is my personal machine, not my work one.
I was just anticipating all the anti-MS comments that were surely going to come over this bit of news.
I need a sign like this:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ddelay/2100975026/
I have done this for my wife, her dad and 1 friend of mine so far.
I even removed the Vista partition I had setup for dual boot on my home machine so I could make more room for games.
I think I stand a better chance of running Windows Server 2008 than Vista
sure is nice to see all the apple fanboys/vista haters getting the low ranks they deserve.
"Macs are great. So are PCs. So are toasters. It's just a computer, get over it."
Vista compatibility will be available in SP2...
Will this work on a Mac?
Dude...you REALLY need to elaborate on your question. You are going to get FLAMED big time if you don't do that like NOW.
whats to elaborate?
He's wondering if SP1 breaks bootcamp/parallels compatibility.
I assumed that as well...but you know what assuming does.
Service Pack 1 should install with the same amount of ease in BootCamp, as it will on any generic Windows PC.
makes an
ass of
u and
me?
I was joking because people always ask that question, especially at places like the woot.com forum. :-)
gets the microtards all riled up? (on a voting-down rampage?)
sheesh, it was a legit question.
Well im in europe and we got nothing here and ive checked over and over
nothing for me either.. tho there is an update for the live tool bar..woopeee
will this brick my iphone?
Yes, it will brick your iPhone. It's a Windows Vista update, you silly man, not an iPhone update.
If you wrote it over the iphone's software, yes...
what is the download link?
you have to go to windows update and search for new updates.... but im still having no luck
Click the "READ" link below the story...
I don't hate MS just vista. It's a poorly designed OS.
Everything runs at least 2x slower then it did under XP.
IE7 sucks too. That phishing filter is such a worthless
piece of crap...
And you know what the real sad thing is? The fastest vista
laptop you can buy is a macbook pro. For real!
IE7 works great on my XP Pro machine, but crashed in the first 5 minutes out of the box on my Vista machine. Couldn't load FF fast enough.
While I agree that Internet Explorer is a terrible web browser, the MacBook Pro's reign as the superior Notebook ended, on 10/25/2007.
"Everything runs at least 2x slower then it did under XP."
Twice as slow? What are you running Vista on, 256MB? Your hardware's shortcomings are not Vista's shortcomings.
"That phishing filter is such a worthless
piece of crap..."
THEN TURN IT OFF.
"And you know what the real sad thing is? The fastest vista
laptop you can buy is a macbook pro. For real!"
You know what the REAL sad thing is? That you think a MBP is the fastest laptop out there. For real!
pwnt.
Hey chebwa what are you like 12 years old? Was vista your fist OS? Did it come on the computer that mommy bought you at walmart?
Since that's the case guess you don't know any better.
All my machines have at least 1GB and most have 2GB and they are all main stream.
It dosen't bother you that you paid twice as much for an OS that's twice as big and twice as slow
as your last OS? OH not me, I just turn off all the features that I over paid for and I'm perfectly happy
running my programs at half speed. Please, just admit that as of release 1 vista sucks and move on.
Who know maybe this SP makes things better.
no chris he's right, your just an idiot
That is not true. The comparisons that tey did were bogus they didnt include any of tyhe faster pc computers in that article so the fastest vista laptop is not a MAC.
Holy crap dude, reeeelax Vista 1 Wasn't perfect when it was first released, so what? what OS was released that was perfect? He is right I am dual booting Xp and vista and I must say that I prefer vista more and it is defiantly not twice as slow as Xp I can barley notice a difference. I think you need to grow up and maybe not get so upset when your stupid comments get owned
I have a very average/below average setup. AMD Athlon 2500+ @ 2.3 Ghz, 1 gig ram, 6800GT, and I yet run Vista Ultimate. Flawlessly. I decided to dual boot XP Pro just to see how the two compared, as I had forgotten. I deleted the XP partition in less than 2 days. Vista is more stable, more secure, and works much better with multimedia. Windows Explorer has a lot of subtle improvements that I sorely missed, WDDM makes everything pretty, the list goes on. And on. I'm starting to think that the naysayers that rip on Vista haven't even used it. Seriously, the experience you guys describe could not be further from the truth. XP was great. After SP2. Vista worked great out of the box.
Just my $.02
"Your hardware's shortcomings are not Vista's shortcomings."
If the same hardware runs XP just fine, then how is that NOT Vista's shortcoming?
Aero Glass is the only really noticeable difference between Vista and XP. XP runs just as well or better than Windows 2000 on the same hardware, so why is Vista such a dog?
Actually IE 7 renders pages a lot better than the old ones so I like it. Much better for web design... etc.
Although it's still no firefox. o_O
FWIW, I've been using Vista for several months now and IE has never crashed... and I use it quite extensively. In fact, I've had nothing crash except for a video driver during a game. But the latest round of Forceware drivers seems to have fixed that for me. And this is on the 64-bit version of Vista running a CPU with a 1 GHz OC. Not sure what's wrong with the rest of you.
"your just an idiot"
Oh, the irony.
"If the same hardware runs XP just fine, then how is that NOT Vista's shortcoming? "
Isn't that kind of like saying, "If the same hardware runs FarCry fine, how is that NOT Crysis' shortcoming?".
I mean, just because a piece of software takes more power to run doesn't necessarily mean there is a shortcoming in said software. That's just not very sound reasoning.
"
If the same hardware runs XP just fine, then how is that NOT Vista's shortcoming?
"
If that's the case, then we should all be using Windows 1.0 to make the most efficient use of our hardware.
@ Tony ("your just an idiot" -- Oh, the irony.)
AHahahaha. that's nice.
...but i'm not sure that's technically irony :P
coming from macbook pro owner yes that title was true, but now its belongs to the dell xps 1730(correct me if im wrong)
Ok i have to say something here, Vista is not as bad as many people say it ,sure it has its flaws, but so does every new os(who can remember when XP came and people say it was garbage). Leopard came out and it had a couple of bugs.
I have both Leopard and Vista Installed on my macbook pro. I do like OSX a little bit more than vista, but Vista is very nice(if you have a decent pc)a. If you want to bash a MS OS then do it with Windows Millenium. And i dont care what anybody body says but AERO looks fantastic. On I personally recomend vista to any parent for the parental controls and the (yes i hate it to but it works) User account Control. I Recomend Mac as a second computer and i cnat stress enough to learn linux.
Got my copy of Vista SP1 downloaded ready for the tool bag, got a few people using Vista still with dialup so they will never get the updates even tho broadband is available in the area. Me had trouble with crashes when Vista first came out but recently have not had a problem with it! If you want a fast standalone PC, Windows 2000 is blazin' on a Core2Duo! Ohh and Chebwa is kinda hot and emo :P
I havew this installed on 2 od my 3 Vista machines for several weeks now. We are on MSDN. Didn not touch it until it went official to OEM's. The computers over all feel smoother. Other than that, I have not noticed much of a different. I have it installed on a gaming laptop (32bit Home Premium), and my main desktop, (64bit Ultimate). No programs stopped working. Everyone is happy.
Yeah...I'm having no luck either...God bless this crap...
DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING JUST ONE COMPUTER:
This might be helpful information for your readers.
No, it's not helpful. Stop giving incorrect info. It will work fine for one computer...
Geez... what is wrong with you?
Dude, it's a copy/paste, read the link.
Why? To save bandwidth? DERRRR....
Windows Update is not doing it for me. How do I get SP1?
go to the update site
Likely not pushed to the update servers yet.
They're not pushing it via Windows Update for about a month.
