HTC Shift is finally coming to the US on the 24th with Sprint 3G
Ah, after long last, HTC's first UMPC, the Shift, is finally making its debut in the US. The early results are in: the keyboard and the Sprint EV-DO are good, but the $1,500 price tag might be a bit heavy to swallow -- especially considering our European counterparts are paying about $400 less, and we also get to tack on another $60 per month for the 3G.

I'd rather have the Experia X1 .. it has the same resolution. If I want to carry around a 7 inch display I may as well carry a laptop.
JOSE @ Mar 19th 2008 11:36PM
so true! this makes no sense what so ever... for that price you can get a sensible 12inch 15 inch or even a basic 17 inch hp laptop built the way u want or atleast with the options hp lets u choose from.
JohnTitor @ Mar 19th 2008 11:53PM
Xperia's gonna cost around a grand
I say n800 with any phone that supports the 3G and bluetooth modem link to n800
derX @ Mar 20th 2008 12:13AM
You stole the words right out of my mouth. And at that price, *unsubsidized* the Tilt and an Eee PC cost less together.
Hell, then there's still money left over to buy a printer.
I say no go.
Zach @ Mar 20th 2008 1:18AM
yeah, absolutely not worth the price.
hopefully wimax isn't 60 a month for data when it's widely available..isn't the main thing to be less expensive? a bit off topic, but i doubt they will lower the prices :|
or maybe kindle-like services will come where you buy the product and get the internet for free (hah. i wish)

Coming with sprint 3G, heck, it might as well not be coming at all.
boe @ Mar 20th 2008 12:47AM
While I'm glad Sprint is considering additional PDA devices - that model seems a little too big for me to consider. I think something like this may be what a lot of WM users have been waiting for the Gigabyte GSmart MS808.
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=1128 VGA res, full SIRF III GPS chip, LED flash, Wifi, a pretty good processor and a reasonable amount of memory. It is a reasonable thickness -116 x 60 x 14.1mm. It might even work on both networks
Nathan @ Mar 20th 2008 12:17AM
When you say "both networks" do you mean both CDMA networks? As in Verizon and Sprint? Or do you mean both GSM networks as in AT&T and T Mobile? Because the phone you linked to only support GSM networks and will in fact NOT work on any CDMA provider.
Brian Crooks @ Mar 20th 2008 7:27AM
I think he is referring to CDMA and iDEN. If it only works on GSM then they might be able to get to work with iDEN as it uses a modified GSM load.
The Dude @ Mar 20th 2008 12:11AM
$1,500? Might as well buy yourself an Eee PC, slap in the HSDPA module and you'll still save $$$.
boe @ Mar 20th 2008 1:39AM
Nathan - thanks for catching that - what a pity.
sinjinn @ Mar 20th 2008 1:09AM
"wow what a hot device , cant wait for this to come out" - 2007
"meh , overpriced , no battery life and if i wanted something hat big i'd get an eee" -2008
mark @ Mar 20th 2008 2:16AM
what's the best sprint 3g phone out there now?
mogul?
Alexkass @ Mar 20th 2008 5:07AM
2h of battery life is crap...
LaRainette @ Mar 26th 2008 5:50AM
Dude I don't know who wrote that article but he should look at the balue of dollar:
1 euro = 1.6 dollar so NO we europeans don't get that shit 400$ off...
We pay it 1,199 euros = 1,918 dollars more that 400$ MORE than you americans pay it ^^
Be kind and change that ^^
Azayzel @ Mar 20th 2008 8:25AM
Cool it's making it to the states, uncool that it's still ridiculously expensive for what you're getting. I'll get one when they're a cool grand, but until then I'll stick with my old-hat TabletPC. Engadget also mis-quoted the price difference saying the Euro model is "$400 less," it's actually the same price if not a bit higher at around $1700.
To be fair though, you can't really compare this to the Eee PC as it does quite a bit more and you're not stuck with a crappy resolution screen with useless bezel wasting real estate. Go play with one and you'll see what I'm talking about. I'm thinking more in the line of the latest Kohjinsha model, at least it's convertable to portrait mode.

i was slobering all over this a year ago...but a day late and dollar short...plus i believe it DOES NOT have phone support (according to all the rumors). Now, if the thing came wimax enabled with phone support and sprint survives as a company long enough to get thier wimax up and running...well, i'll be slobbering for that till next year.
Mark @ Mar 20th 2008 11:32PM
Hah, no way no how. Unless the Sprint EV-DO module is activate-able as a phone, not a modem.
Actually, not even then. Yet again, HTC comes up a day later and dollar shorter.
Cole @ Mar 31st 2008 4:41PM
I thought that it was going to go to AT&T due to the fact that the 3G was supposed to be HSDPA. Sprint sucks so bad.
