Good news for all of you who missed the red Zune 80 during its short-lived (and
somewhat delayed)
Valentine's Day cameo -- Microsoft has decided to take your money after all. Yep, the red 80 is back, and it looks like it's a permanent engagement this time. The only catch is that you've got to do it up Zune Original style, which'll set you back another
$10 - $15 on top of the usual $249, but that's the price you pay to have your player match your kicks, Dr. Hipster McHip.
Update: Apparently the Zune Originals site will sell you a custom Zune without any customizations (who knew?), so it looks like you can get crimson on the cheap if that's what you're after. Dollar dollar bill, y'all. [Thanks Micheal and Mark.]
Oh yeah, and here's the link to J Allards quote on "Xbox in your pocket"-

I am glad they brought back the Red Zune 80. I think its a very attractive Zune color choice. Also for anyone interested I am still planning to tattoo a full scaled Zune 80 on top of my shaved head. Peace out...

One burning question:
Why do the words 'Apple' or 'iPhone' have to grease-fuck themselves into EVERY conversation dealing with technology?
Rule #1
The iAnything is NOT the 'end all' of our technological evolution.
(China, which is the country that invented the touchscreen, has their own version of the iPhone called the MiniOne)
(Korea, in the technology dept. are YEARS ahead of us)
(Japan...well, let's face it, no one hears about it unless it's Sony. [Toshiba is no more..RIP] )
No, that's one rule with three addendums.
Next rule:
I'm really glad that I don't hang out in 'internet caf's' and I only see this one-logo-blind-fanboyism online, because there would be a shitload of hipsters with black eyes. Not that I'm a violent person, but the same rule applies to Starbucks. Some idiot that orders a coffee that takes notecards to remind him of the entire recipe...needs his eyes poked out. iPlain and iSimple. That should be the punishment; the more assholish your coffee order sounds, you get an ipod nano shoved into your optical socket. What, you only have 4 eyes? Then the blond next to you gets her's poked out as well. I'm not choosy, eyes are eyes. And they need poking!
All stupidity aside, here is what I deeply and truly think when it comes to product loyalty:
First off, I don't believe that the Mac commercials on tv are really truth in advertising, and here's why:
1. PC is a dumpy idiot, while Mac is a hip 'Dude, you're getting a Dell!' kind of guy. PC should be a Mech Warrior, with glowing cords wrapping his huge mechanical exoskeleton, escaping steam sounds that drown out the rest of the commercial. Cut! - But Mac should still be the whimpy-looking pussy he is. No offense to Mac users, but with the exception of that new $25,000 Mac (that no software can utilize anyway unless you're running a massive virtualization setup), why are you paying that much? My boss is always on the iphone with the imac ipeople, itrying ito iget his imac ifixed. I can already hear the comments, 'maybe your boss is an idiot'. Yea yea, if that's all you've got, ilet it ifly.
2. Sure, since Mac is so closed-sourced, they can afford to cram OSX full of software. I think it's a fantastic idea, considering you just spent twice the change on a Mac for half the hardware stats of a PC. I think the real message those commercials are sending is the same message that Pres. G.Dubbya sent after 9/11: Don't pay attention to what's going on, just go out and buy stuff. We'll take care of the t'rr's'ts, those damn Microsofties, heh heh heh hehe. I don't know, maybe that's going a bit overboard, but doesn't it sometimes seem like technological warfare? Not like Intel and AMD, who are like childhood friends playing cops and robbers, and every now and then Intel has to drop out of character and say 'dude, are you alright? I only 'play' shot you.' and AMD says 'waaaaaaah, butyoupointedthegunandibackedupandtwistedmyankle waaaah' and Intel is going 'shhhh, get up man, you'll lose 60million dollars this quarter if you just lay there hurting, it'll be ok, it'll be ok'
3. No custom cases? Just that boring, drony, sterile, neutral, 'work you fool!' case? I feel sleepy just thinking about it on my dezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzk.
4. Those commercials fail to mention, even early on, that Mac is for creative work. Creative work, but work nonetheless. PC on the other hand, is an all in one machine, more specifically GAMES. Oh, so maybe Mac has WoW. So what. PC has every game ever made for it. Even linux can run a large number of PC games. Can the Mac do that? Well, yea, I guess now that Parallels is out, you could do that. Or VMWare Fusion. Or BootCamp. A little over-compensation, iDev's? Guilty about something? Fuck it, nice work. Pretty bad though when a selling point of Mac is that you can install Windows on it three different ways. *laughing hysterically*
Notice that OSX is the only OS that VMware has successfully implemented full 3D hardware acceleration support on? Does that not make you wonder? About many things?
5. I don't know, I'm spent. Just thinking about ever reading another engadget article is already pissing me off, knowing someone is going to use the ipod comparison. Ugh, you people suck.
S.O.T.E.C uses:
Windows for games, web mastering
Linux for showing people how 733t I am.
Seriously though, this is what I bought, and what I spent on it in Feb.:
AMD 2.6ghz AM2 Brisbane core 512kb cache
4gb OCX 800mhz dual channel ddr2 RAM with heatspreaders
ASUS AM2 motherboard with PCIe. Small board, but it works.
550w PSU with intake and exhaust fans.
MSI Nvidia 256mb Turbo OC edition - dual slot model with huge heatsink and exhaust.
Total cost for all that hardware goodness: $415
The only price better than what I paid for a complete system is free.
I've never seen a Mac for less than $600, base options.
So quit spamming (yea, I'm calling it spamming) the threads here and everywhere else on the net with all those lovely words you can't wait to wake up and post that begin with 'i'. Because 'i' 'hate' 'you'.
Epilogue:
I know, not exactly the most productive, cohesive, or kind way to get any point across, but there it is. Now where did my double mocha frappacicco extra hot one sugar no cream extra whip cream sprinkle of cinnamon go?
Ok...I generally don't read many long posts but, after you mentioned "black eye" and "hipster" in one sentence...I had to read on.
Just to add onto what you said... I think this is where the whole technology division went wrong: Somewhere along the lines, the superficial "hey, I'm cool too" generation took over. Of course, advertisers picked up on this and catered to their needs.
Hipsters and the like learned that actual artists were using Apple products because of superior CPU caches (at the time) for their work. Of course, they had to express their "me too" attitude and jump on the Mac bandwagon. Since then, Apple has started using Intel machines, used 3rd party manufacturing, employed "half-truth" and fashion marketting to exploit the impressionable market share and maximize profit. Some people became fanboys because they did not know any better.
This is just like the Starbucks phenomenon. For me, the best coffee is made by roasting your own beans then, grinding and brewing to your liking. Of course, the Starbucks fanboys will tell you that Starbucks is the best because it's the simplest user interface. ...but, it's about what's most convenient and tastes best to you.
Really... Enjoy what you enjoy. ...just understand that there's many sides to a story. Everyone's needs differ and if you enjoy what you use...more power to you! ...just give everyone else respect if you don't want your quality of life pissed all over.
Sotec, That was teh balls...
I'm not an Apple hater, but I do prefer Microsoft. I'm getting the Zune for the bigger screen, and I like the Zune pad more than the clickwheel. Apple still dominates the market for mp3 players so nobody should worry about Zunes anyway (that's for Microsoft haters, by the way). The best thing I see coming from Apple is the iPhone and iPod touch. I really like the macbook air too. Bottom line is, Microsoft dominates software sales and is just coming into the mp3 market, Apple dominates mp3 player sales and is still struggling in software sales (probably because apple software only runs on apple computers).
