XPERIA X1 white paper reveals yet more details
There certainly hasn't been any shortage of XPERIA X1 details to emerge since the desirable device was first announced back in February, but those still looking for something to whet their appetite until they can actually get their hands on one can now get their fix courtesy of a new white paper released by Sony Ericsson, which packs a bundle of interesting new tidbits. That includes details on the pre-loaded XPERIA panels, along with word of DLNA-compatible media sharing via ActiveSync or WiFi, details on the video recording options (30fps MPEG-4 and 30fps H.263, both VGA), and confirmation that the only browser included will be Internet Explorer. Also according to the white paper, you can expect Google Maps and Java ME to be installed by default, and you'll get Exchange Direct Push email built-in, with setup wizards provided for Gmail, Yahoo, and Live Hotmail. What's more, as Inxperia points out, there is also a noticeable lack of 1700MHz support, although we doubt that'll be a deal-breaker for too many folks.

I say that's DAM hot. HTC and SE make a good combo! man..
aaron @ Mar 19th 2008 5:23PM
It is DAMN hot.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Mar 19th 2008 5:36PM
So? That still makes it hot :)
larcen007 @ Mar 19th 2008 5:41PM
But DAMN hot is hotter than DAM hot - there is one more letter. ;)
Reader @ Mar 19th 2008 7:54PM
No one wants to be damming hotness either, I rather it flow freely and preferably in my direction.
Chuckles McGee @ Mar 19th 2008 7:56PM
Yes, but will it blend?
Jeff @ Mar 20th 2008 2:18PM
i hate you, Chuckles McGee.
All you seem to say is "i welcome our ____ overlords" and "does it blend?"
is that all you do? repeat mindless internet memes?
does it make you feel like you're part of a movement or culture or something?
rock99rock @ Mar 19th 2008 5:24PM
Agreed. I get a new phone every 3-4 months. I could see holding onto this one for at least 6.
The Dude @ Mar 19th 2008 5:28PM
I've got dibs when you're done with it.
Captain Obvious @ Mar 19th 2008 6:02PM
You do realize that they can be recharged, right?
Raheem @ Mar 19th 2008 6:11PM
Six month battery life ftw!

Any word on a GPU?
BEN! @ Mar 19th 2008 5:39PM
It says "HW 3D Graphics" but it's doesn't mention that drivers will be provided :P
JohnTitor @ Mar 19th 2008 6:07PM
who's it by?
and it really makes no sense why companies like HTC don't give drivers, I mean I understand if it was like a closed system and they only put in the GPU for their own stuff, but its a WinMo devices and they'd be locking performance at no gain
SoloSalsa @ Mar 19th 2008 10:37PM
I know that Sony has used Neomagic graphics chips in the past, maybe them again?

amb9800 @ Mar 19th 2008 11:13PM
It has a Qualcomm 7200A CPU, which has a built-in ATI Imageon chip.
Most ironic part of this is that this exact same chip is in HTC's own models, but it doesn't provide drivers for built-in ATI GPU (which is what the whole controversy is over). The same thing, with drivers, gives you an Xperia X1.

Yes, it will have the msm7200A chip, but I haven't seen S-E confirm anywhere that 3D hardware acceleration will be enabled with drivers. The device will be manufactured for S-E by HTC...

When when when? How much how much how much? That's all I need next.
mphayvanh @ Mar 19th 2008 5:42PM
This is the one device I would pay to get out of my contract with VZW and go with any carrier who has it!
DAM HOT.
larcen007 @ Mar 19th 2008 5:43PM
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice shame on you again. Let there be drivers this time.
Esat @ Mar 19th 2008 5:47PM
All I know is, if I had to choose to have sexual intercourse with a mobile phone, it would be this one.
It is of the upmost importance to note that the above sentence was based purely on the assumption that I too would be a mobile phone as opposed to the species homosapien. Ultimately though, if this were the case then said phone and myself would be mere tangeable objects and not sentient beings, therefore rendering any acts of intercourse 100% improbable.
Mirage007 @ Mar 19th 2008 5:55PM
If you were a mobile phone, which one would you be? I hear the female phones have bigger memories (read:mammories/iPhone), but the male phones are quicker (read: whatever you want/Tilt). It seems like there is actually little differnce between our kind and hum...er i mean cell phone kind.
Esat @ Mar 19th 2008 5:59PM
Good question.
I suppose I would be a nokia 1620 (http://homepages.at/nokiamann/nokia/nokia1/elements/photos/2-%201620%20Energy%20Handy.jpg)
Sure i lack technology, and I have a stubby antenna, but my sheer size would dominate any current gen phone.
The iphone would be mince meet after one pummel of my arial.
I also speak from experience. My dad had this phone and dropped it whilst crossing a road. The arial pinged off and was then run over by a taxi before he could pick it up. He stuck it back on with chewing gum, and was greeted with full signal strength.
They just don't make em like that anymore....
halkonlar @ Mar 19th 2008 7:13PM
Esat,
glad you managed to post in the right place this time :P, ranked up
Glen @ Mar 19th 2008 7:59PM
I'm staying a virgin until nVidia's APX 2500 is released!! now THAT phone is DAMN HOT!!
michael @ Mar 19th 2008 5:48PM
Hmm. Google Maps is on there by default?
Not to say that Gmaps Mobile sucks, but many people have already found Live Maps Mobile works best for a mobile mapping solution.
It's not just me, but these other sites that reviewed it:
http://www.pocketnow.com/mobile.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=1000
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/smartphones/windows-live-search-for-mobile-vs-google-maps-mobile-218467.php (sorry for Gizmodo link)

http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/2007/08/handheld_shootout_google_maps_vs_windows_live.html
I'm just saying. People don't usually try new other services once they adopt one, so I thought somebody might want to hear.
Maestro @ Mar 19th 2008 6:54PM
Actually, live maps is very nice. You have to give props to MS for it. It even has voice recognition so you can just say what you are looking for and it is DAMN accurate...(or is that dam?)
michael @ Mar 19th 2008 8:35PM
That's what I meant. All the links I showed had reviewers say that Live Maps is far better than Google Maps being installed by default.
Did I not make myself clear enough?
Dan @ Mar 20th 2008 1:00AM
I'm going to have to agree.
Live Maps Mobile is amazingly awesome.
Olu O @ Mar 20th 2008 2:30AM
yup, used both, both on mobile nad pc and i can say that Live Maps kicks the shit out of Google Maps. Too bad the Live package isn't as popular as Google but good job Microsoft on this one!
Student Driver @ Mar 20th 2008 3:22PM
I will have to fiddle with it again, but one thing I didn't like about Live maps was the need to save your current position before you could kick off a search for something nearby. So, I use the map to take me somewhere, and then I want to go to a new place. For some reason, I had to save that location before I could try a search. That was lame.
Ace b @ Mar 19th 2008 5:49PM
Yeah,I need a price too.If it's more than a ps3,I'll have to decline.
Come to think of it,I wonder if it will have any special ps3 connectivity.
That would be a welcome feature.
Alan @ Mar 19th 2008 5:54PM
This smartphone will released at 2009.
So we will get better alternatives until it be released.
BTW it is a nice smartphone
Alan
huh @ Mar 19th 2008 6:04PM
It's a concept phone. Will all the features be good? Never. I waited and waited for the SE p800, and even when it was released it was the best in all categories. But that still doesn't mean very good. Unless you are just buying a style/brand phone for the image (without substance), figure out what you need out of it (good app selection, games, good music player, camera, mail synchronization, etc). Of course, even doing that is near impossible, when sites like Engadget publishes reviews that play along with the corporate image, it's difficult to distinguishe the real features from the hype - how fast are its USB transfers, will the camera work quickly and with good quality in different scenarios, etc.
Namarrgon @ Mar 20th 2008 4:55AM
You're asking these questions too soon, especially the hardware performance. Wait till someone reviews it.
From the software side, it'll have the same apps/games/players/capabilities/etc that any WinMo6.1 phone has, and will perform like them too (i.e works ok most of the time, fails spectacularly a little too often). Should be prettier though. If it's this popular, we might see some new apps taking better advantage of it.
Adam @ Mar 19th 2008 6:11PM
Damn Qualcomm lawsuits. The U.S. version, from the whitepaper, only records at max QVGA. So much for the VGA record I greatly anticipated.
bernardino @ Mar 19th 2008 6:37PM
That Xperia blog post says it records at VGA, but only 24 frames per second (fps) in U.S. and not 30fps or 15fps. 24fps is what is typically shown in movie theaters, while TV and DVDs usually show 30 fps. Not sure why they went 24fps for the U.S. does anyone else know why?
I haven't looked at the white paper yet, so if what the blog says is wrong please let us know.
bernardino @ Mar 19th 2008 7:26PM
Nevermind, the blog is wrong. The whitepaper says:
*US model supports MPEG4, H.263 24fps encoding @QVGA only and not H.264
WTF? Crippling technology, that sucks. I wonder why? Fear of people using camera to record films in theaters? Other piracy fears? RIAA/MPAA breathing down their throats?
Adam @ Mar 19th 2008 7:27PM
Sadly, the white paper clearly states that the US model is limited to a QVGA@24FPS while recording. Bummer. Another phone being gimped (current Tilt user). I'm sure it has to do with the lawsuit on Qualcomm. If I were HTC, I'd dump the Qualcomm chipsets and put in a processor that the US doesn't go all lawsuit-crazy about.
Raheem @ Mar 19th 2008 6:12PM
iPhone power button is broken. I shall be waiting for the X1 now. Well... that or the JCB phone.
Surur @ Mar 19th 2008 6:34PM
More features include
Touch focusing in the camera app.
USB Mass storage
Media library client for music, video and pictures
RSS reader
FM Radio
D-Pad (good news)
128 MB RAM, 512 MB flash
only 145g, 16.7 mm thick
The Opera Mobile browser 9.5, with the Flash Lite plug-in, plus hardware video acceleration and VGA screen is going to make this the best mobile browser yet! My next phone for sure!
Homeboy @ Mar 19th 2008 6:35PM
Since there are no mention of price yet, I guess that this baby isn't ready to walk out the door?? During the latest years my interest for cellphones has dropped but this phone is certainly one very interesting one and could be my very next phone.
markcih @ Mar 19th 2008 6:36PM
I said it before - LOT of features like the late lamented UX50 Sony Clie PDA. With all features on (alternate between WiFi, BT, browsing, record a video, etc.) battery life was 1-2 hours. And it was not a phone.
JAmerican @ Mar 19th 2008 10:09PM
I had one too. I just hope this device lasts the whole day. The UX50 was definitely unique.\
The X1 is just simply amazing.

No GPS built in? GPS Enabler HGE-100
Also oddly enough 4 "standard" batteries BST-39, BST-40, BST-36, BST-37.
Surur @ Mar 19th 2008 6:58PM
It certainly has GPS built-in
• 3.2-megapixel AF camera with touch focus
• Video capture and playback upto 30 fps
• Integrated WiFi
• Integrated A-GPS
